I did say that the companion gear I'm using is all blue in the vigorous trait (both weapons and armor). He's carrying sword and board, with all heavy armor. Someone else is using our Xbox right now so I can't log on and see what skills he's using. My memory is pretty lousy; I'm sorry. I'll come back later and let you know.

Are you also asking about my main character? She's a Magblade with an inferno staff on the front bar and lightning staff on the back bar. The skill I'm using to heal both of us in my rotation is siphoning strikes (I think). If you want the full breakdown of my main character, please say so and I'll add that info when I come back.

Thank you for the reply! I play a Petsorc, I run both pets for solo content. Now I'm trying to make Bastian useful. He's lvl 17 now, sword and board. At first I tried to make him a DD, so his gear is all blue Medium, and he had purple Lightning staff, quickend (or maybe it was agressive... confused, to be honest, don't remember). He did not prove to help me much as DD - most always he's dead (I do heal him, but... ). Now I want to try him be a tank, so I'm collecting blue heavy pieces. No good traits yet found... And too expensive to buy. At least I'd love to learn some sgood skills to focus on.

I know! I first got all blue gear in the Quickened trait for my companions as soon as the prices were reasonable. I got all three weights so I could open up all their armor skill lines. Lately I’ve been pondering getting purple gear for them, but the prices are still so extremely high for armor. Purple weapons are a bit more reasonable however on a good day. I still think it’s silly that out of all things companion gear has to be such a gold sink. Any crafter should be able to craft it with the normal green, blue, and purple materials which we already have in the game.

Technically I'm team Mirri, simply because I got her first. I cba to finish grinding her levels or rapport, not even gonna try that with a second companion, so bastian never got a fair chance really.
I spend 99% time running solo, activating her for some additional heals when I do a WB or something. I would keep her around more but if I hear one more time that she likes big cities or that there's nothing wrong with opportunistic harvesting, I might actually strangle her. Initially I enjoyed her wit and would still if it was a very occasional thing.
Even worse offense for me, though, is that the companion constantly gets stuck in combat, preventing mounting or using a wayshrine.

Bastain of course. Why I prefer him?

He is imperial, my favourite race, and good looking. Mirri is... a Dunmer, my least liked race alongside Nord, and she is a follower of Vivec of the Tribunal... so meh, and she hates me if I collect insects, how annoying.

Bastian has more interesting quest, has more variety of lines on different things, and why is a problem if he dislikes cheese if it gives him digestive problems? XD I Think it's a good characterization point. Mirri sounds annoying and sassy every thing she says.

Both of them don't like criminal activities in their ways, Mirri just close an eye if you steal, but not if you kill, so I don't get why Bastian must be the worse of the two (instead Mirri dislikes you a lot if you do a sacrament quest or enter the DB sanctuary while Bastian not). I don't use them when I feel criminal and all is good! There will be time for evil companions XP
But really the most annoying to me is Mirri and her reaction to insects harvest, those are things I do while I travel without thinking...

I started playing ESO three weeks ago and got Bastian thinking he would be a helpful hand. Well, he is helpful -he gets all the aggro- but the more I have him following me the more annoyed I am.

There was a day I went to fence some stolen goods [I was progressing the Dark Brotherhood story and looted the dead bodies -no, he wasn't present while I was executing my contracts] and he commented something like, "Because you weren't caught doesn't mean you didn't deserve to." *rolleyes* The worst of all was that his raptor went red when I cooked something with cheese in it. I am not entertained at all.

As for his personal quest, I think it will take a very long time, as the bar of approval hasn't moved at all all these weeks.

(I really miss Marcurio from Skyrim; I love his dry wit and his voice, and his comments always make me laugh.)

Actually, Bastion points out Heavy Sacks and such.

That said, they are both mostly useless and tend to impede my play more than help. The constant stuck in combat because Mirri decided to yank a mob out of sight and will take the next 20 years to kill it if left to her own devices, or simply dying 30 seconds into any fight where you may have needed them to actually help turn the tide... bleh. If the treasure sacks from Mirri ever had something worthwhile in them, then maybe. But all I have seen so far, is the kind of junk people leave in half looted chests.

I would have prefered a blank, customizable, character-like companion with no personality and very basic voice lines. Or, even better, alts. Mirri and Bastian suck for rp, and rp is the only thing they are useful for imo.
Still, if I have to choose, Mirri is better, bc dunmer. Have her tag along as a Telvanni servant/apprentice.

They're equally annoying, but Bastian has more useful skills and his lines can be rather hilarious because their timing often make him seem unhinged, e.g.:

Upon killing mudcrabs, "They made their choices" - "What choices, Bastian? They're mudcrabs"
Again upon attacking a mudcrab: "Oblivion take you!" - "Bastian, calm down, it's a mudcrab"
Randomly in the wilds: "The gates of Oblivion stand open!" - "Bastian, do you have a concussion? We're not even near a dolmen"

On the other hand Mirri makes me want to beat her to death with her own spine whenever I willfully or accidentally pick a butter

I have both Bastion and Mirri maxed out and equipped the same way. Mirri can hold her on along side me in a fight with a world boss. Bastion seems to die in almost every fight with a world boss.

I did unlock her amd have her maxed out rapport but she is still lvl 5...

Mirri can be fixed by a non-interaction add-on for torch bugs.

I have yet to find a way to get along with Bastian.

Not really a fix if you want the bugs for bait, so I basically don't use the companions, because I value stealing and grabbing bugs over... whatever it is the companions are supposed to bring to the party.

I solo so like having a companion most of the time. I (usually) have Merri tank for me - she does pretty well at it.

I haven't unlocked Bastion. No interest in having him along.
