Why did I pay full price for blackwood when 4 months later it's half price?

Why doesn't? Makes perfect sense. You get the first wave of people that want it at launch. Then you have some people the aren't sure or just don't need it then buy it when it goes half off. Then next year it will become of a DLC download you can get for basically nothing the includes all the other previous chapters. This is standard for all games and how ZoS has done things.

Wow, really unfair for a company to change for a product.

When I decided not to pre-purchase in protest against the poor execution of the companion system, I did some research:

Sale cycle of a new chapter, which usually launches June:
35% off during quakecon, usually August
50% of during community event, end September/October
67% off on Black Fredas and during New Life event

And then Free if you buy the "full collection" when the next Chapter comes out.

(I just bought Blackwood for $30... along with Greymoor and Elsweyr. I got Morrowind along with my Summerset pre-order. Meanwhile, the people who paid full price and got each at release, got to play with them all that time that I couldn't. And also, they got to do things like sell new recipes and collectables before they dropped in price. Etc.)

In February I bought Greymoore for full price.

Two days later they dropped price by 70%.

So yeah, tell me more... ^^

Im seriously fuming mad at this. Im paying a permanent subscription, have done so for years. Most of the time i buy the limited edition expansions too and I just bought sweetwater cascades fully furnished. Im not rich, i have to save for these things.

I feel ripped off that the expansion is sold cheaper only a few months later...if i had known prior i would not have bought blackwood back in june.

Look up "market segmentation" and "cashflow management"

The goal is to create a way to extract more money from those who have it without completely blocking out those who don't. So you have an edition at launch with a load of extras for the 1%, a launch edition with a few extras for those who don't. Then you sell it cheaper but minus a few accessories. After that it drops to being part of a subscription (whether you want it in your subscription or not), then you add it to the base game. The more willing you are to wait for content the cheaper it gets.

The clown store is the same basic idea - giving people things they don't *need* to play the game but either make it more pleasant or let them short cut stuff if they have loads of cash (eg skyshards or doing the ... psijic quest again).

I suspect they also leave the current crown store gifting/gold mess in for the same reason - players in low disposable income countries (relative to US pricing) where players tend to accumulate lots of gold through play (and I'm not talking about botters here) and trade it for DLCs which in turn extracts more cash revenue from the richer folks who bought crowns to get gold.

Likewise you do pre-orders to generate bookable revenue before launch, then you generate a big chunk of revenue, and the price cuts generate you more bookable revenue, and if you time it right that takes you round to the point of the next pre-orders and keeps the lights on.

I never pay full price. I ordered two digital keys, one for each account, from CDKeys just before it went live; it was about a third off. I bought Greymoor the same way so I would qualify for the house.

"4 months" hits differently depending how you look at it. I always know the chapters will be available without CE stuff on discount/bundle sites pretty fast when the thing actually launches. there is almost no point in buying straight away pre-launch unless you get CE. I buy CE knowing all this in advance. You pay full price for the CE knowing it will never go on sale and the CE upgrade will bring you up to that price(there might be exception to this somewhere but is pretty reliable).

Why did you pay full price for that TV, when 4 months later it's on sale.

I like to buy on release instead of starting the content when most people already finished it. Especially because I'm up to date with PVE content. It would be awful if you had purchased crowns a day before a sale.

I would have actually preordered it if they had in-game marketed it to me and previewed the items, because i would have wanted the motif. I don't follow social media or stuff, so i didn't know. Just like, saying. I need in-game marketing for old people.

Yeah, and this is just a general market practice across all industries.

After a certain amount of time, things go on sale to sell more items. We literally have a few days of the year specifically designated for large scale sales of items. I can't imagine this player wouldn't know what Black Friday is. Is 5 months later the right amount of time for it to be ok? It's just an odd complaint if 4 months is bad but a Black Friday sale a month later is A-OK. Because most things have Black Friday sales, so expecting something to not have one is a bit naive. I'm even waiting to buy a new TV for another month because I know it will be on sale, they always are.

    In response to the original post;

They need to do something to pull some folks back in. PC has been down about 800,000 concurrent players, I believe just on Steam platform alone, since the release of NW.

They'll need to compete. Having a chapter sale and a free DLC might* help them to do that? I don't know for sure, but I'd assume that's the logic behind it.

Edit: This information is only from reports I've read about and/or seen on content creator releases/streams.

Why did I pay full price for coffee when 2 week later it's sold 50% off?

I mean, it's called marketing. And it's not related at all to ESO, because every single brand will do the same.
    I'm a single character man.
    Stamblade. Khajiit. Mostly pvp.

If you want the content bad enough, you pay full price rather than wait for it to go on sale - its that simple. This kind of thing happens all the time. If getting the best bargain is your biggest priority then wait 3-5 months after content drops before purchasing. Its that simple. Works the same way with literally every product out there on the market.

Becous you wanted blackwoord right away and didn't want to wait for it to get in discount. That's how life works. If you could have looked i to the future you would have waited. You would also have been super rich cous you would know on what match to bet.

I'm not upset I paid full price, even as an ESO plus sub. I did it knowing full well it would be on sale later, but I made the conscious choice to do so because I thought the pre-order mount and other stuff was cool. But I probably WOULD be upset if I had paid full price at a much later date without any pre-order bonuses or extra incentive, so I understand how you feel.

Might be a bad analogy, but just look at it this way, maybe- a lot of people in this world pay just as much as the cost of the expansion on coffee or alcohol every single week at expensive coffee shops or bars because they like it, while I look at that as a huge waste to drink your money. But I don't really bat an eye at the cost of an expansion in a game I enjoy, because I'm going to get a lot of entertainment value out of it. Perhaps try to set aside the cost and look back on any enjoyment/fun you've had playing the expansion while having it, and that will outweigh the cost for you? You got way more out of it than you would a cup of coffee, that you're just gonna drink and never see again, and at least you can return to it.

Some people like to be the first to experience content, get pre-order specials, make lots of gold from new items, and other reasons to pre-order or at least order upon release. I’ve waited until the sale these past two years but I would preorder if it was something I was especially excited for — more Morrowind or Pyandonea or Falinesti — yes, I love elves!

I can totally understand why you’d feel upset having bought not knowing it would be on sale after several months and the free DLC, which doesn’t benefit ESO+ subs, is an additional letdown, but if you enjoy the game otherwise, I hope that you won’t quit. In such situations I try to refocus on that if I was happy before with my purchase, nothing has really changed which should take that away. Which isn’t at all to say you shouldn’t express your frustration and use this to inform future purchases. But it is something which helps me as I otherwise dwell too much on regrets.

@wishlist14 I wanted to send you a message but couldn’t as your profile is set to private. If you’re on PC NA, send me a message with your game name if you’d like and if there are any types of non-Crown exclusive furnishings you’d like. I know it doesn’t address the issue or do anything toward making up the cost and I’m pretty tight myself at the moment, but I can craft and have long collected plans and materials so maybe I could do a little something to bring you some cheer and help you enjoy decorating your gorgeous new house! :)

Yeah, I have to agree with this too. Most companies do this when they have an expansion coming out. And DLC doesn't count as an expansion.

4 months is almost half way through the chapter's life cycle before another new one comes in. Preorders started around late Jan, so we're roughly 8-9 months in since the full price with extra goodies came out. And all in all this is a pretty standard marketing strategy.

I don't understand why people say this. I think a DLC is an expansion.

There are 3 kinds of expansions in ESO-- chapters, zone DLCs, and dungeon DLCs. You can lump zone DLCs and dungeon DLCs together in the sense that they're both available for Crowns, but zone DLCs add new zones to the game, whereas dungeon DLCs do not-- although dungeons do add "area" to the playable gameworld, and DLC dungeons tend to be larger than cities.

When people say that "DLCs are not expansions," to me it sounds like they're saying that DLCs don't expand the game and make the gameworld bigger, which they most certainly do.

Next time, OP, try looking for discounted games from sites like greenmangaming (that is if you play PC). Pretty much offers 30% or even 50% off after a week or two some new chapter etc is announced. That’s how this one has bought all the chapters since Summerset.

Sure others can suggest more websites.

You paid more earlier because you wanted to the content when it first came out. Games are ALWAYS less expensive months after release. This isn't really new. Like not by decades.
