Pledge of Mara

Hi,

I'm trying to understand the value of the Pledge of Mara, included in the Imperial/Collector's Edition, only being able to be used once, ever.

This thread touches on it quite nicely, but isn't part of the customer support/feedback section: http://forums.elderscrollsonline.com/discussion/comment/739839/

My issue: I'm annoyed with the look of my character and want to make a number of changes (read: I'm not happy). Unfortunately, there's no way inside the game to make these changes so the only option available to me is to start over. Fine.

The problem is that I'm quite fond of the Ring of Mara--my spouse and I use it because, you know, "D'awwww" and stuff. Also the 10% extra XP bonus is nice.

Unfortunately, I've come to realise the problem with a once-off item like the Pledge of Mara--it doesn't take into account a whole bunch of variables that could (and do) result in players wanting to start over.

Also... a collectors' digital item that can't ever be used again? Wow. What an incentive to have bought the collector's edition :/ Thanks for that...

Surely making the Pledge of Mara a reusable item that can be used once per character isn't unreasonable OR, for that matter, illogical?

Please consider it and implement it. Whoever decided to make it a once-off item must've been drunk at the time.

I cannot confirm this myself, but I saw it mentioned in chat that you could put the ring in the bank and transfer it to another character. That user did say that the xp bonus is usable on another character if they're both wearing the rings.

In the event that doesn't work, did you both order the Imperial Edition or just one copy? If both, you should have a spare unused Pledge of Mara. It only takes one to give you a set of rings. You could simply use the other on different characters.

    Thanks for the response :)

Yeah, I know you can transfer the rings around in the bank but with no 'status effect' or whatever claiming that it works, I don't have any certainty that it does.

And if it does work then that just proves the unnecessary nature of not simply having the Pledge of Mara be reusable.

We ordered one physical Imperial Edition and one digital, so yes, we both got a Pledge of Mara but ended up using it.

Long story short: We started on one faction, realised we weren't happy with our characters, started on another (not wanting to replay all the content again) and then realised we preferred our original faction. Go figure :)

    LOL

Easiest way to test if it's working is to kill the same mob repeatedly. This is how I tested the xp bonuses.

Group up and be near each other in the same zone. Hover over your character's xp bar to see how much you have. Now kill something. Note the exact amount of xp you gained.

Now both of you equip the rings. Wait for the same mob to respawn or at least the exact same type of mob. Lvl 7 Imp for instance. Note how much xp you gained that time. If it's higher then the original kill xp, then the rings are working. \o/

For future reference, group bonus (even without being married) only works if you're in the same zone and near eachother in that zone. The Mara bonus seems more lenient and works if you're at least in the same zone. So if you're grouped and both wearing the rings but he's in Bleackrock and you're in Stonefalls, you gain no xp bonus. Similarly, both of you must be wearing the rings for the bonus to take effect. So you can take it off if you feel you're leveling quicker than you'd like.

I was pretty bummed out as well when i found out that the Imperial Edition items are one-time items.
I hoped that every character would obtain the items, like in WoW.
Having to dump all of your maps, pets and rings into the bank whenever you find out that you don't like the character you are playing is incredibly annoying and the treasure maps are not worth it if you can only use them on one character.

You haven't been using the treasure maps if you feel they "aren't worth it." They're worth their weight in gold in VR zones.

That said, don't burn them on a throwaway character.

(Also note you have to take the maps out of the container to bank them, which is stupid.)

That's the exact problem i have with those treasure maps.
I started off my adventures as a Dragonknight. I opened up the map pack for my Alliance and started using them to gain some good blues.
At level 13, i found out i didn't like the class so i made a Templar instead.
I thought my Templar would recieve his own set of treasure maps...but he never did.
Sure, i only burned 2 or 3 treasure maps so i can still use the rest of them on my Templar, but i think it's a really stupid idea. Especially since they don't tell you that it's a one-time deal.
Luckily i never deleted my first character like many other did, otherwise i wouldn't have any maps at all.

I take it the ceremony for the Rings of Mara doesn't join you to that persons account (and by proxy, all characters on that account), as I was originally told? It's character to character?

    You, sir, are a godsend.

We did precisely this and it worked!

Deleted our old characters and remade them with the same names.

It's a long journey ahead to get to where we were, but sod it, I'm happy :pensive:

    Thank you again!

I have to ask--where did they mention that they bind accounts? Only ever saw characters mentioned. Certainly, the names put on the rings are character names and can't be changed.

Anyway, point remains: it's silly to have the Pledge of Mara not be reusable except on characters it's already been used on.

Sorry, "they" (ZOS) never said it. It was mostly in the forums when the game had just been launched.

Personally, I thought it was an odd that people were saying they were account binding, rather than character binding. I still haven't used my rings because of that. Perhaps now I'll give it a try.

Just tested. If you have a Ring of Mara on your main, even though its bound, you can put in bank and send to any of your other characters and use it on them.
