Bow & Resto staff. Those are both ranged & support weapons. Companions within melee range are dead companions. Even if they are using full tank build. When they are at range, they are less likely to "stand in red" & die.

Watching Bastian knock mobs around with D-swing doesn't get old for me. If we can't knock things into the air with it anymore, at least the companions can. As a melee player, I can also keep track of him easier that way, and for the content I use him for, he doesn't die all that much.

Either Mirri resto or Bastion S&B, atm Mirri...

I am currently using two handed and he doesn’t often die… I do want him as a tank but will get him a shield once two handed is levelled… I like him… he’s alright

I use Bastian with S&B. Provoke, Kindle, Basalt Barrier, Ritual of Salvation, Drake's Blood and Unleashed Rage ult.

My main character has Bastian set up as a healer, and he's been a good sidekick for her questing adventures and things like world bosses and Oblivion portals.

I also have Mirri set up as a bow DPS, and she works well with my healer/ice mage warden alt (and also with the main character when I pull her out for dailies and such).

I've considered leveling s&b on Bastian once resto staff is maxed out, but I think ranged works a lot better for keeping him out of red. Maybe I'll pick up the frost staff idea since he likes destro staff, and I'm not sure I want him knocking everything around with a flame staff (as entertaining as it is, at least until he knocks things out of my aoes).

BastianTank: Sword & Shield, I have yet to get Mirri, one was exhausting enough for me to max out, don't relish doing it on another one anytime soon, if ever

After leveling up everything on Mirri and trying all builds out, both are now resto staff and heavy armor.

Oh dad gum it, hand shook and I clicked something. Bastian, sword and board, heavy 5 l 2p L for heal, designated tank, just gotta hold em while I dmg them and heal him lol. Mirri, Dualwield using aoe dmges, for handing regular/trash mobs.

Both are close range combat cause I use winters respite (and revenge for that matter heh) to keep em alive while I do my thing (Don't want em dodgerolling the bosses to reset, but staying it the ohshitheal...)

I use them about equally.

Bastian: Restoration staff
Mirri: Bow

They're just house guests at this point.
