Dual-Wield

Using Mirri, Dual-Wield so she doesn't dodge roll until at least 50% health or lower.
1. AOE: Warp Strike, Masque of Torment, Razor Cape, Life Siphon, and Spinning Steel.
2. Healer/ST: Starfall, Blood Transfusion, Life Absorption, Reverse Entropy, and Sniping Silver.
3. Mixed: Starfall, Sniping Silver, Life Absorption, Spinning Steel, and Life Siphon.

Bow & Resto staff. Those are both ranged & support weapons. Companions within melee range are dead companions. Even if they are using full tank build. When they are at range, they are less likely to "stand in red" & die.

Watching Bastian knock mobs around with D-swing doesn't get old for me. If we can't knock things into the air with it anymore, at least the companions can. As a melee player, I can also keep track of him easier that way, and for the content I use him for, he doesn't die all that much.

Frost Staff

Unlike bow or any other staff, the wielder of a frost staff tends to stand their ground, preferring to block and bash rather than dodge-rolling. This means they don't spread the fight out all over or ever reset the boss by dodge-rolling too far back.

Although I'm currently having Bastian use a Frost Staff just to level it, I prefer him on Sword and Board. He's not bad at it, for what companions are supposed to do. Let's me use my backstabber cp perk too.

Right now mainly using Mirri with restoration staff for healing.

Got Bastian with destruction staff until I fully level it and unlock all the skills and then I'm going to switch to sword and shield for him.

My main character has Bastian set up as a healer, and he's been a good sidekick for her questing adventures and things like world bosses and Oblivion portals.

I also have Mirri set up as a bow DPS, and she works well with my healer/ice mage warden alt (and also with the main character when I pull her out for dailies and such).

I've considered leveling s&b on Bastian once resto staff is maxed out, but I think ranged works a lot better for keeping him out of red. Maybe I'll pick up the frost staff idea since he likes destro staff, and I'm not sure I want him knocking everything around with a flame staff (as entertaining as it is, at least until he knocks things out of my aoes).

Miri with a bow for mass immobilization and the damage over time ability. Even with those though she's mostly a healer with the Blood Altar and another heal that I change based on the situation. Basically I configure my companions for CC and group support due to their unreliability compared to a player.

Oh dad gum it, hand shook and I clicked something. Bastian, sword and board, heavy 5 l 2p L for heal, designated tank, just gotta hold em while I dmg them and heal him lol. Mirri, Dualwield using aoe dmges, for handing regular/trash mobs.

Both are close range combat cause I use winters respite (and revenge for that matter heh) to keep em alive while I do my thing (Don't want em dodgerolling the bosses to reset, but staying it the ohshitheal...)

I use Bastian with my support built characters, so I don't worry about him being up in melee range. I give him 2h because it seems effective enough and I like the aesthetic on him, especially that he has the old version of dizzy swing.

Mirri I use with my more solo oriented characters, so I give her a bow and enough self preservation to not have to worry about her as much.

I tank, so I keep Basti with a fire stick. Bonus points since I'm a DK and I can therefore just get away with Encratis buffing both of us.

I keep him in medium armor and give him Vanish, Fire Barricade, Starfall, Sniping Silver, and Destructive Blast. I don't have his ult on since I'm still levelling him, but it wouldn't matter in the first place since it's a melee ult and he usually stays as far back as physically possible. Still wish I could use 'Y+click' to place him...

The Ultimate can still be used with a range weapon, he just needs to exhaust all his dodge rolls and his target gets in melee range of him for 3 seconds then it will cast.

I use bow with Mirri so she stays back and alive while I do the rest when actually fighting something serious. I find the main advantage of a companion is they can engage mobs and cause them to pretty much ignore me while I run past them. When I'm far enough ahead that the mobs won't engage me anymore, Mirri bounces back to me and we continue on until the boss. So she's a nice decoy and saves me some time.
