You did it ZOS! Console HDR toggle finally made it into the game!

It only took 4 years, but you finally added a HDR toggle with Update 31 that released today!

Console players know that HDR has been a challenge to say the least. Now with this toggle, I can once again enjoy the original ESO look, not the over saturated crayon colors.

Thanks a ton ZOS!

If you want to read the details of the Console changes, including Dynamic Resolution for next gen consoles allowing is to hit 4k 60fps in performance mode, link is here

I noticed immediately when I logged in today and was pleasantly surprised! The game looks so much more realistic and not so cartoony anymore!

    Thank you!
    :)

The setting for HDR slider still doesn’t seem to do anything though. (I am on PS4)

If I could ask for one more small improvement, I have the brightness of the game at max and it still seems very dark. If I go with the suggested setting for the three eso rings it is much too dark to see. The ability to increase the brightness more would help.

New hdr looked horrible for me. Idk if it was because I was in blackwood & it was night (which I hate blackwood at night cause it's too dark) but everything was way too dark. You could see my character that was standing in a shadow. His blue dye looked black as did the gray. Only reason I could make out my character in shadow was because I have some white on his armor. The vibrant hdr might not be great but at least you can see the different colors

I noticed this too, still not fixed. I’m on Xbox series X. However, I did notice if you slide the slider all the way to the left, the brightness increases. But this brightness increase adds a fog to distances. You can test this by looking out towards a sunny horizon.

Agreed - massive thumbs-up to the team for getting HDR sorted out. Thank you!!

I feel the Default mode is more balanced color-wise than when it was tried a couple years back before being reverted, too. The game looks incredible now.

Everyone's TV is different, but as far as brightness goes, what worked best for me was to set the in-game brightness normally (where middle logo is slightly visible) and then change my Samsung TV's backlight setting instead. I had it set in system to allow backlight to go as low as 8 (normally 20) under low-light conditions in the room (which is normal when I'm gaming). Boosted that setting to 12 minimum, still at 20 max, and things looked a lot better.

Coming from WoW, which is VERY cartoony by design, ESO's HDR was just fine to me. Nowhere near as cartoony as WoW. As soon as I logged in yesterday, I set the HDR to "Vibrant".

Totally agree, spent most of the day playing with settings and it was just too dark. To have it bright enough to see everything all the menues were a very washed out, faded grey. I've turned it off again for now but will keep playing. It's a massive improvement on the old version tho!

Options/Video. It should be at the very bottom. If you can't see it you may have to double check things:

Make sure TV has the HDR option.
    Turned on in TV settings?
    Turned on in Console settings?

This was handled very well. The slider seems a bit bugged but you can still drastically alter HDR colors in the way you see fit. Furthermore, no options were taken away. Players who wanted to keep the old HDR can still do so.

We were given more options and that was all.

On the other hand, they downgraded the Performance mode to dynamically scale resolution.... in other words, the stable 60FPS is no longer stable, and there are tons of frame drops, stutters, and other issues that never existed prior to Waking Flame.

Giving new options (Like with HDR) is always the better way to go. Not taking away stuff (Rip pre-Waking Flame Performance mode)

Personally I liked the old/vibrant hdr better. Not only has it grown on me since buying a Sony 4k/hdr tv, but I changed the TVs color space to “AdobeRGB” and it killed most of the over saturation, for example lava looks orange, not a deep red. The new “Default” hdr to me feels like it’s just an option to turn off hdr, makes the game looks way too drab and dull, not to mention extremely dark. But that’s just my opinion, I know most people prefer the default option.

Coming from launch on PC in 2015, I was drawn to the ‘dull’ colors. It was the OG look of ESO. So at least now that choice is back.

Brightness is still a issue, so I can see how the Vibrant setting is a desired choice.

The slider is next to useless. Far left changes it, but then the first tick right - and the entire rest of the slider - seems to be all the same colour/brightness whether you have it on vibrant or the new setting.

Honestly, I'd like to be able to set something halfway between the dull version and the vibrant version, which you'd think the slider could handle but it doesn't.

Exactly right on the slider. Was almost thinking Im the only one seeing this. But the far left changes the brightness and screws with the draw distance. It adds a fog. You can see this by going to an area where there is a nice looking horizon, slide that slider to the max left…the horizon features get fogged out. Slide it one notch right, the horizon detail comes back.

It's not even just the horizon. With the slider on the far left you lose a bunch of detail in every graphical aspect of the game. It's just not great as an alternative to how dark default it is. Like default HRD is just weird, like the shadows and blacks are so unnaturally dark and every toon looks really muddy even in direct "sunlight", thats not how light and shadow work, ZoS.

FWIW that's not at all the way the game is supposed to look, from an artistic standpoint. I get that some ppl like it, but the snow is literally blue in that mode lol
