For those of you who farm chests and safeboxes...

...do you leave the chest or safebox if it's one of the lower leveled ones (by this I mean leaving the container completely untouched)? From my experience I tend to get rarer items like the Telvanni paintings from Intermediate and above chests. I'm hearing that the more sought-after purples are to be found in the higher leveled safeboxes, as well. Is this true, or would I still stand a chance of getting a purple praxis from a low level safebox?

I never really get anything worthwhile...also, if I open an Advanced or Master container and I take nothing from it (assuming its a motif or something I'm not interested in) does that leave the items for the next player who might want them, or is it better that I just go ahead and loot the entire thing? Again, this is if I take nothing whatsoever from the container after opening it.

Simple can still drop purple, I have gotten multiple paintings from simple chests.

Of course, higher quality will always mean better loot, especially if combined with the cp passive. I grab everything either way though, I like loot.

If you open something and leave it, the same loot will be available to other players. A LOT of people dislike that very much and also pick fights over opened but not fully looted chests and safeboxes, so you're better off taking it all and then sorting inventory after.

Yes, I loot it all, but like many of us have come across my fair share of unlooted chests that have maybe a green item or a piece of ore.

I usually just take everything but I have a merchant I can unload the stuff I don't want on. I think you get a better chance of a good drop on the higher level chests. Works that way in dungeons anyway. I believe there is a very small chance of good stuff spawning in the lower level chests but the better the chest the higher odds in your favor.

I am pretty sure the items stay in the chest until someone takes them or it respawns. If chests work like resources once you look inside a timer starts and it will eventually respawn.

Mostly just speculation on my part.

I don't go looking for chests but I do open every one I come across regardless of its level, and I fully loot it. I only loot safeboxes when I'm in the mood, but when I do I loot any difficulty.

I live the pirate life when farming chests and safeboxes of any level...take what I can and give nothing back! It all sells or decons and 5 GP is better than 0 GP.

What is a safebox? Is that something with Thieves Guild?

I always take everything from a chest unless it contains a unique item that I already have. Then there is no choice.

With treasure hunter slotted I usually get green/blue from simple chests with set pieces about half the time. Harder the chest the better the quality and the more often you get set pieces. Not sure if same is true for furnishings.

I do farm chests in Deschaan and Rivenspire.

They're found in most cities, the ones I farm are in Vvardenfell. Usually guarded by a shopkeeper or some other wandering NPC, and if you're caught looting them guards will be looking for you. They're somewhat unique-looking, like a silver locked container. I THINK the respawn time is within 30 minutes or so? In the time it takes me to do my chest run through the Vvardenfell wilderness--about 10 to 15 minutes, it feels like--I can re-start and the chests are back. Not sure if the safeboxes are the same.

I loot everything at every level. There is nothing worse than running/riding out of my way to loot someone's green cotton shoes of stamina they were too lazy to destroy on their own. 1000000x that feeling for people who leave 1 green runestone in psijic portals. Yes I got +5 rapport for my companion but you're still a jerk if you leave "trash" in containers for other people to find!

Even if you left behind something "valuable" (thanks person who left 2 pieces of Frostbite!) I'd still prefer to use my own RNG. Also, unless you have an addon that prevents the gold being put in your purse, I'm still out 100ish gold from popping that chest that I'd rather have thanks.

The respawn timer is the same five or six minutes as everything else, it's just that they can respawn at different locations. Safe boxes might always respawn in the same locations, not 100% sure about that.

Looting it all puts more things on the respawn timer so looting it all increases your odds regardless if that particular chest has anything or not.

They do. I don't know if they spawn randomly or follow a pattern, but there are set locations where they spawn.

This one opens and loots everything. It’s rude to leave lock picks or whatever items deemed as ‘trash’. Also, now that there is the perk from Mirri to earn extra gold, there is even more incentive to unlock treasure chests.

The devs can add the condition that you only get that Mirri perk applied when you loot everything.

I loot everything from all types of treasure chests since, eg, so far I got the majority of inferno staves of Mother's Sorrow drops from simples chests. LOL
And I won't leave anything behind cause "my trash isn't someone else's treasure".

I loot everything as well (with exception of treasure maps I already have in my inventory, no choice there).

Not only do I think partial chests eventually respawn but I think if a lower leveled chest isn't looted in a certain amount of time I think it upgrades to the next level. The reason I think this is with the newer passive that illuminates chests as you get close to them I've found a ton of new ones in really obscure and well hidden places (some not even visible except for the light coming out of the pile of dirt) and they are usually Advanced or Master level.

The items will be in the chest for a limited time. After you open a chest, whether you take any of the contents or leave it it starts a timer. As long as you left at least one item in the chest it remains for the next person in an unlocked state. If you are level 14 for e.g. the gear items will be at that level for the next person who comes along. But yes, the items remain until the chest times out (about 15 minutes for Overland chests). After it times out it resets.

I loot any chest or portal I come across. Gold is gold!

As for partially looted chests, it doesn't bother me much, because I rarely (almost never) encounter it. There was one time recently when someone left a staff in... and it turned out to be one I needed for collections, so it worked out anyway!

I hardly ever get paintings any more. I've gotten a couple newer ones, but I used to get overloaded with paintings of the seasons, or crags, etc. from the base game and I rarely get those any more either, so I think they've done something to the drop rate across the board.

A simple chest will stay a simple chest, removing it gives it a chance of respawning as something better.

I have read many times that UNLOCKING chests starts the respawn timer and that is consistent with what I have experienced in limited testing.

So leaving stuff behind in a chest does NOT negatively impact loot drops in any way. If the previous player looted everything there wouldn't be a chest there but a new one will spawn at the same time regardless of whether there is still stuff left behind or not.

You lose the time it takes to ride/run over to the chest to check it but that is all. The rest is in your head.

Problem is, an un-looted chest doesn't need to be unlocked again, thus no skill up with Ledger...

Not true, wasted time does affect loot drops because that time could have been spent at another chest or resource node. Not to mention time is one of the most valuable things in life and to waste it cleaning up somebody’s trash isn’t exactly fun.
