Maybe they should make it so once a chest is unlocked and opened it disappears after a minute, regardless if anything is left in it or not.

Nah. It will reappear regardless eventually. It doesn't despawn that quickly so that people have time to fix their inventory and take what they wanted. ZOS should just make an official statement about how these work so that the debate can be put an end to forever.

@SirAndy is a very well known long time user here. You can read one of his posts regarding this here:

Also, you might want to read @Tandor's posts below there regarding same.

I've come across enough partially looted chests in my travels that I don't need to read anything more about how it works. If a partially looted chest even respawns at all, it takes too long to justify leaving the chest partially looted. Please do not leave chests partially looted as it hoses the next person who comes along.

Many chest locations, especially in delves/dungeons/etc have several chests waiting to spawn adjacent to each other, and they tend to be on different timers waiting their turn to start their own spawn timer when the previous one despawns (and others in the area have despawned), so that there tends to be a fixed maximum number of 'live' chests active at any given time...
[edited to add for clarification: "fixed maximum number of 'live' chests active IN ANY GIVEN AREA/DELVE/DUNGEON/ETC at any given time..."]

It's not like any single chest is that important in the area at any given time.

There are rare times when the game resets after server restart, or no one has visited the area in a long while when the population is low, that one can find several chests or thieves troves within just a few feet of each other.

The problem with society these days is that no one drinks from the skulls of their enemies anymore.

They should add a button saying
"I am done looting this chest. Destroy the rest and despawn the thing"
And if the dam breaks open many years too soon
And if there is no room upon the hill
And if your head explodes with dark forebodings too
I'll see you on the dark side of the moon

Never understood the loot some of the chest thing. It takes way longer for the chest to cause a respawn at any other location. Yes, there are a set number of chests up at any given time, making one disappear, causes another to spawn elsewhere, which could be right in front of you!

So in fact, someone running a circuit in one area, even if no one else is in that area and leaving chests unlooted, basically keeps additional chests from spawning anywhere in that whole zone. So the poor guy looting his chests on another route on the other side of the zone, his chests don't repop because someone was too selfish to fully loot theirs. Making matters worst, he is inadvertently helping the guy whom is being selfish, by causing more chest respawns in the other guys area.

Just loot the dang chests. Yes, inventory full, duplicate maps, all good reasons to leave stuff, but rarely do I come across those, it is normally some cheap crafting material or near worthless white gear item.

If your inventory is full the most likely item you'd leave behind is the cheapest junk.

Correct, but if your inventory is full, that should also be the last chest you loot until you fix your inventory problem. Plodding ahead to see if you can still get a decent drop and leaving a string of unlooted chests, is just being a troll.

I basically never see that. Or I'll see someone grab like two. And with how ridiculously rare some drops can be, I don't blame them for not wanting to miss out. Most of the time they just open the chests in their immediate LOS, then port to town to fix their bag.

Someone doing a string for a long time is someone being inconsiderate, but I have run across that so very little.

Mostly it's people getting annoyed because 1 or 2 chests weren't fully looted, which I also find entitled personally. Like the vast majority of the playerbase doesn't do this, and the majority of the people who do are being reasonable for their circumstances such as full bags and no eso+/assistants, or they are new players and think they are doing something nice.

So I find these threads more annoying than the unlooted chests personally.

    ROFL.. true that!

I was however speaking from past experience making my first few million in Deeshan farming MS fire staves though. The number of times I came across long strings of unlooted chests, was mind boggling and a complete waste of my time. I never came here to gripe about it though. Instead, I simply opened BMU and ported to someone until I got another instance, which is what most should do instead of complaining. The game does actually offer in-game workarounds for a great number of issues, like this one.

If you find these thread more annoying than unlooted chests, then you must not farm chests very often.

I try to get the new paintings in each zone and run across many partially looted chests. Similarly, in Blackwood I cannot find an unlooted Psijic portal. If I didn’t know better, I’d think they were bugged.

I don’t care if they do eventually respawn, there are still too many opportunities to encounter a chest before it respawns.

Sorry, but I get annoyed with the idea that “it’s not a problem for me, therefore it must not be a problem for anyone else” mentality that pervades this forum. Your mileage may vary.

But it's very easy to fix by just porting. Beyond that, most people have perfectly justifiable reasons as to why they left the loot. And I don't think it's reasonable to expect everyone to play like me, it's enough that most of them do. And the fix would be to quickly delete the chest after you've opened. And I don't think it's reasonable that people miss out on loot they earned fair and square because of some mob that turns out was chasing them half across the map, or because some player pulled something towards them that has aoe, or their bag is full just because someone else gets annoyed about getting stuff that wasn't what they hoped they'd get.

It's just part of playing a multiplayer game instead of a single player one. Sometimes someone else's playstyle will clash with our own. 🤷‍♀️
