In the Future #5: Separate Skins and Body Markings

Latest small nitpick of the week...

In the Future, please separate the Skins and Body Markings, especially for Argonians

Argonian Body markings and skins are one and the same. So a player cannot use both the skin look they chose at character creation and the body marking they earn/buy - they have to pick one or the other.

I know I'd certainly like to have a cool Argonian scale pattern AND have the body marking of my choice.

Totally agree, especially with some of the more basic skins. Would also like for vampirism not to make body and face markings more pale.

Face and body markings are also largely useless when using 90% of earned skins.

Can't tell what you are using but for another example I cannot use body markings with the Bright Throat Skin equipped

or for another normal example - any normal Argonian "Body Marking", which is more like a skin to be frank, cannot be used at the same time as other actual body markings

For a treat, slap Psijic Body Markings on your character with Bright Throat equipped.

The body marking is Enveloping Scales, it's consistently visible through skins, though the results are... mixed. The skin is Maomer, which is one of the most consistent skins in the game. Meaning a lot of it is "transparent." Looks very good on Argonians, though.

It actually does work like that, I think. I'm using Void Pathos and Gloom Lurker on a khajiit, so she looks like a black sphinx cat with white points. The Void Pathos has holes in it that the body marking shows through. I think your complaint is that the skin is on a layer above the body marking, so body markings don't show through an opaque skin.

They're talking about how Argonian and Khajiit can't use body markings without getting their original scale/fur patterns removed.

yes they are both technically body markings - which doesn't make sense.
For Argonians and Khajiit they should be skins - not body markings

Also Body Markings should not be covered by skins

This has bothered me for long time. It's so frustrating that argonians and khajiits skin types and fur patterns are a body marking so if they want to use some body paint, tattoos, scars etc, they have to settle for default skin/fur look.

For example, looking like the argonian from the Blackwood promo pictures and trailer is impossible
    e55AUDc.png
    ^ That's body marking+body marking.

We can't even combine Bright-Throat Skin with the Bright-Throat Markings!
[Lie] Of course! I don't even worship Daedra!

Yeah, except, it's a legacy system. Originally, the only skin layer item in the game (that was player "accessible") were the vampire stages. So, it made sense that those would go over the fur/scale patterns.

Almost a year and a half later, ZOS was like, "okay, skins are a real cosmetic item now." It was even later than that when we got the option to swap out or body markings on the fly. So, Argonian Scale and Khajiit Fur patterns used the body marking structure because that's what existed at the time. Redoing it now would require a lot of work to deal with an issue that relatively few players are vocal about.

Not saying it couldn't be better, just, there's a real reason why we haven't seen improvements.

Hence why I called it a “small nitpick”...

YES. I always wanted to try Vampirism on my Khajiit, but it meant she would lose her Siamese points. That irritated me enough that I never became a vampire, despite being really irritated that I could never try vampire, because losing the markings is worse than not trying vamp. (There's a personal reason the markings are so important to me.)
