Is the Blackwood zone a bit underwhelming?

Any new release these days, from dialog, storytelling, characters, scenery, enemies, etc., feels like a cut-and-paste rush job. I mean how many times can you look at the same expressionless face with a different hairstyle and gestures you've watched thousands of times and take any of the poorly written dialog seriously? Hey, but at least we have new toads to kill. :/

A couple of weeks I was overcome with the feeling that I regretted a lot of the money I have spend on this game. The list of things done by ZOS in last 6 months have nearly destroyed my interest in playing after 5 years straight. I was original player and left because of what I considered to be poor design.

I came back for One Tamriel and was quite happy till they did away with my proc sets, destroyed my ability to heal in pvp , nerfed Rationer so it no longer worked with The Ambrosia's, costing me around 5 million gold in a cipher recipes and mats.

Instituted a new cp system that did not improve my stats, and then changed it again.

I could go on but I am crying already.

I am profoundly sorry I signed up for another year. And even more that I did not get a refund on Blackwood while it was possible.

The area is fairly well designed, even if it falls al long shot behind Summerset and even Vvardenfell (not to say that little jewel, at least IMO, that is Murkmire). Problem is that it is too sparse in population (monsters I mean) and what you find is too uniform and uninteresting.

The main storyline starts at a snail pace (and the chats with Eveli sure don't help...), but becomes better at its 3/4ths. Secondary quests instead are generally surprisingly good; the Stibbons one may become a classic. Same for dungeons, generally well designed and fun to explore.

What saddens me is that the so called puzzles are no puzzles at all. You can put your brain at rest and simply mash a button: those silly cubes go right by themselves. If the intention was not to be heavy on players, better dispose of puzzles entirely and use some big, frightening but altogether innocuous monster or something of the sort.

Last (but not least...) in the quests the interruptions to speak to Eveli and Mirri (a tad less with Bastian) are really too many: useless and boring.

It just seems like a mix of Cyrodiil and Murkmire sandwiched together without much of a unique feeling imo. I like the ruined castles, but that's really the only "special" part of the zone for me.

I will rage vitriolically against swampy zones until I'm blue in the face.

as a further note: if you are going to bring back an old enemy - then do it in a new zone. Like Elsweyr, that was good. It was something familiar (Dragons) wrapped in something new (Elsweyr)

If you are going to bring back an Old area then create a New enemy.

2020 & 2021 both bring back old areas with old enemies

We've seen Vampire Lords in Skyrim before (Dawnguard) - the villain of Greymoor, the Yokudan, was more suited to a Hammerfell/Vampire themed expansion - and I'm sure they could have added a Blackreach zone underneath Hammerfell

Dark Heart of Skyrim should have had "Void Storms" and just been about Void monsters. The "Dark Heart" literally was not brought up until Markarth....

While Blackwood is Cyrodil and Dagon...again. Luckily it blends in Black Marsh to freshen things up a little
I am not saying to Never bring back the old stuff.
What I am saying is that don't bring back an old area that is focused on the same enemy again.

Example: when we go to the Shivering Isles - don't make the threat Jyggalag. We've seen it before so the threat should be different this time around,

I really love the fact zone is more empty in terms of monsters, because it's more realistic. More zones should be like this - with bigger terrains just to explore, see views and have feeling of actual travel. I hate when zone is like theme park with monsters every 5 meters. There should be places with bigger and smaller density of creatures. It's too late with this map, but scale of zones should be different. Bigger terrains which covers smaller parts of map, really big cities with dozens of buildings, large forests, epic mountains, long roads, eh..

I must admit that with every chapter zones are more and more beautiful.

Cyro is home away from home and that was missing from the game.
I am more than happy that the zone is currently not full of the type of player with 20 apex mounts zerging it down as Elsweyr was.
Quite a few of the quest stories are standard fare, but the side ones are very quirky, which is classic ESO storytelling :) The zone is the same -like the dead animal that got stuck in a log on the road.
It feels like a familiar place so I'll likely put in a farming/house run there.
The group dungeon is also fun to repeat and explore.
Perhaps this is an older player vs new player reaction to the zone.
There's a lot of people boycotting purchases until key elements are fixed, which also contributes to the silence there at present. With the forced 12 man change and cp progression nerf, pve players have joined the pvp players by voting with their feet.
That's no reflection on the quality of the Chapter. Thanks to all those who worked on it :)

Architecture and landscape are almost ideal to me, it's like more lively (because of detalization) Cyrodiil. Map is large and has no "dead" zones like Vvardenfell. Yeah, there are same old problems like small towns with 5 houses and empty streets, but besides of it everything is just fine. Well done!

But the rest... Characters, their stories, all of it seems cheap, unnatural and despite of all horrible things happening to the characters, everyone is friendly, lovely and optimistic (unreasonably). Wth even Dark Brotherhood here is a fair and honorable organization. Like ZOS trying to tell us: "We only have good characters, even if they are bad. And if you want enemies, you aren't suppose to deside who is bad, here are some baddy bad cultists wich is the only pure evil in this game!"

Not enough mobs or nodes in my opinion. Feels a bit like Cyrodiil where I'm running around a lot with not much to do. I feel like once I complete the zone story, I'll spend very little time in this zone. Better farming to do in other zones. Better grinding to do in other zones. I have yet to look into the thieving possibles, or farming houses and such.

I'm glad there aren't trash mobs every five paces like there are in Murkmire.
I'm finding the quests to be absolutely wonderful. I've only been doing side quests, though, and haven't begun the main quest-line yet. I've heard it's good, though, and look forward to doing it.
I wish there were MORE quests and things to do. My one (minor) criticism is that I wish there were a few more settlements in the zone. There is a lot of open space where they could have put another mini town or something.
I'm enjoying the companions. I've managed to do both of Mirri's quests, and her quests are great.

I liked it, but I voted "yes" simply because it feels less impactful or meaningful than previous expansion zones have from a story and world perspective. I really don't feel like I've accomplished anything story-wise in this expansion compared to previous ones. Also, after the last expansion which essentially had two layers of zone content, this one has felt small and narrow, and the zone feels empty and lacking the sense of "life" of previous zones so I wish there were more towns and side-quests to do to fill the void a little. My favourite feature has been companions, I don't feel an attachment to anything else and found going back to old zones something I actually looked forward to for the first time since the launch of this game.

Feels perfect to me and a lot better than Greymoor. its gonna be sad if we dont get more Cyro for next dlc.

They confirmed during the Year-Long story reveal that the Quarter-4 Dlc will take place in the Deadlands itself. Mostly because they didnt want to repeat what they did last year and split the chapter into 2 zones (Skyrim/Blackreach)

Also in response to Fans saying that they don't like the Zones being so similar to eachother - that Q4 is just more of the same of what we get in Q2.

on the note of zone design - my primary criticism is that Blackwood - lacks any feeling of being in the woods. The only point I feel like I am in a forest is in one of the Public Dungeons on the map (the one with the Daedric creeper plants)

I hope that the next time ESO does a Forest/Jungle expansion that they actually make it feel like a forest, we got better tech now right?

The only place that actually felt like a real forest in ESO was Selene's Web dungeon.....

This place is great at being a densely packed wooded area.

I'm not sure if it was their goal, but the countryside is lovely, very peaceful. Maybe as a contrast to the Deadlands? The furnishings are colorful with lots of detail. The quests are quirky and fun. I have barely touched the main story (2 chapters) but I am intrigued thus far. I feel like companion gear drops are a tad low, but that would be my only nitpick as of yet.

As far as the portals for the event, given that everyone can hang out inside them and farm, I don't see them as an improvement from Harrowstorms or dragons. But I suppose the lag for the region is less. But I ran around questing for a few hours Sunday and never saw one. That makes their "threat" a bit less. Harrowstorms, maddening though they could be, were amazing graphically. And dragons are just <3

I voted on this yesterday but waited to give my reply until I could really flesh out why I voted how I did. The zone is beautiful. Some of the side quests were very well written. Overall though, it felt more like ZOS was counting on nostalgia to sell the chapter and pretty much phoned it in. I don't think I would call it underwhelming as much as unfinished. For instance take the Dibellite temple. There is a cleaning lady and I think one or 2 others. None of them up to the standards of Dibella. Also if the game hadn't told me it was a Temple to Dibella I would just think it was another building. I don't even remember seeing a statue tof her in there.
The main quest had so many actions and lines in it that could only be called filler.
Greymoor felt the same way. It's like the design team is out of ideals so they are just rehashing past successes without stopping to consider why those ideals were loved and successful.
The companions have the depth of a potato skin. Yes some of the lines are funny, yes they kinda react to the world around them. But again they feel unfinished. Mirri says she'd live to relax at the inn and eat. Yet you take her there and she doesn't take a seat at the bar or table. Doesn't eat or drink. She has so many comments that hint to a backstory that she never shares, even with max rapport. We know her dad runs a shop, yet even in zones where he should be, Mirri never talks about him or visiting him. We know Mirri worked in Mournhold and was respected by the Guild there, yet no one even acknowledges her and she doesn't acknowledge anyone.
Anyway this seems to be becoming a book so I will end it with, it does feel underwhelming.

Blackwood is the most underwhelming chapter so far, everything the trailers hyped it up to be turned into disappointment. The stage/locations look so good but the actual delivery didn't have any impact because I couldn't get invested into the characters or story. I ended up missing the Five Companions we have come to know. If you guys want to hit on nostalgia, why not go back several years to the Planemeld and let loose good ol' Molag Bal again.

This^^^^^^ Which is strange because I have went back into Orsinium, a zone which I don't really like, and played the main quest on all my alts because of how much I liked the writing for Eveli Sharp-Arrow. I was really excited to have another zone with her. Now though she is just annoying.

    I still haven't bought Blackwood.

I have had some exchanges with some friends about it on discord (some who took a break then came back in for BW)
Their main complaint about it is that it feels empty and lifeless (no NPC immersion etc)

Here are some screenshots this person sent me when I asked:
    Screenshot_20210606_205953.png
    Screenshot_20210606_210238.png
    Screenshot_20210606_210305.png

Is it really that empty outside of players?

In their defense, Leyawiin is a big city, probably one of the biggest we have in game, with most of the houses having multiple levels and a lot of them being inhabitated. That's a lot of work (and city environment is always one the most complicated to create with all the roads and doors and other functional stuff logic), and seeing as it was not the only city or city-like structure they had to create for the chapter, I can understand how they ran out of resources at some point and decided we can live with fewer NPCs on the streets.

I really HOPE though it won't stay this way and we'll see more live coming to the streets throughout this year.

The zone feels really empty. I love having the companions but it doesn't compensate for how lifeless Blackwood really is.

Also, the last boss in the Deadland portals is the same one. Talk about a royal letdown. It should have been an EPIC boss like the dragons with different mechanics. That said, Harrowstorms have cemented themselves as my favorite part of the game. I LOVE the chaos and carnage! We need MORE CHAOS, not less!

Far better than Greymoor in terms of story-telling and it has a great epic moment in the main quest. It really reminds me of TESIV.

The zone looks great, it has a bit of Ayleid culture and Imperial culture I love from TESIV. The Imperial castles and cities look fantastic. I love all the references from TESIV.

It's nice to see the Dark Brotherhood a bit. It has been a long time.

I am a bit disappointed with the Deadlands though, I thought we would get towers like in TESIV. Argonian content was underwhelming because it did not feel very different from Murkmire but we did not have much of it so it was ok.

I was not really hyped by companions so I am not disappointed at all. They don't seem really useful but if we can get romantically involved with them, and if we get more of them, that would be fantastic (at least one of each race and gender so we can choose - ok that's a lot and probably won't happen but that would be great).

    p.s. Ok I love TES:IV
