Is the Blackwood zone a bit underwhelming?

It just seems like a mix of Cyrodiil and Murkmire sandwiched together without much of a unique feeling imo. I like the ruined castles, but that's really the only "special" part of the zone for me.

So far, I haven't seen anything of the Black Marsh area (and no, I'm not going to be interested in that at all). But Leyawiin... and the rest of Blackwood I've seen so far is like coming home. And I'm LOVING the quests.

Which is a VERY good thing, since I need Water's Edge x 4, and I'm not willing to spend the RL money for them because I need to finish paying off my mortgage before the end of the year.

I like it more than overland greymoor for sure. Perhaps I like the large open spaces and plenty of grass and fog?

I asked Roslynne and she said according to the squirrels, it's a place of buried ruins, lost hopes, and stone arches but, the arches are not good for climbing.

It’s big in terms of landmass, but around 30% (or more) of that playable area is unpopulated with a handful of harvest nodes - gone are the days of finding quirky details in weird places like base game (e.g the skeleton banquet). The quests are bloated with repetitive dialog and waffle artificially buffing the time it takes to complete. There are two new enemies a toad and a critter-dog. The mythic leads are hilariously placed. Companions are a rush job... better than expected but still need a LOT of work to be anything other than a time sink. But it’s more content for the game you love, so... yeah.

This chapter altogether looks so unimpressive that I didn’t even purchase it, but from what I’ve seen in streams and videos it looks quite bad. Especially when you compare it to how well done a zone like Summerset was.

I like the zone so far. Nice storytelling. Beautiful atmosphere. Well designed overall.

I realize this thread just got started but it would be interesting to hear the thoughts of those who think this zone is underwhelming.

Not exclusive to this DLC, but seems more forced than ever... the NPCs you’ve met all over Tamriel popping out of the woodwork is downright freaky, it’s like a sitcom and makes the world feel small. Lady Clarisse Laurent is the only NPC that should be recycled - because she is epic.

The zone is pretty, I am happy about companions, but and I can't put my finger on it. I wasn't as wowed by it as I was by elyswer or summerset. I am not sure why, I don't dislike but I just don't know.

Zone is nice, but this is mostly swampy terrain and swamps are not friendly and heart-warming areas. This is why I don't want to see all blank spaces in Tamriel map, because after this Murkmire and Blackwood I don't really want more Blackmarsh. There are not many interesting areas left, so if they will resist with filling whole map, we will have less and less interesting chapters.

Personally I wait for Hammerfell with some nice desert cities and rest of Cyrodiil. And of course some new versions of High Rock, because Bretons deserve more love.

First thing I did is to get all of the wayshrines on my main. Grabbed a couple of sky shards along the way. Saw an oblivion portal and killed a few bosses there, and did one of the public dungeons.

It plays like any other zone, except maybe slightly bigger.

I certainly like it way more than Greymoor; snowy regions bore the hell out of me. I dreaded having to navigate Skyrim, not the case here. I only wish enemies were a bit more visible since bog dogs and hackwings are practically blended into the environment, but that's the only tiny complaint I have. Love the atmosphere, very Medieval-y

Really? I'm only so far through, but the story hasn't grabbed me at all, like greymoor did (which I only just finished).

The worst thing for me, though is that I find the dialogue really annoying.. So many things repeated, and the speech just doesn't seem believable to me - it feels like reading a formulaic script rather than how 'real people' would speak.

"Go and warn councillor A and councillor B and councillor C while I report back to councillor D then we meet at councillor D's place".. Who talks like that!!

I like it, but it's hard to top Summerset or Elsweyr.

The only really underwhelming thing for me are these Oblivion portals. For some reason I though they'll be big, impressive things, like the sinkhole, dragon or harrowstorm events.

I do like the zone, there's some cool looking structures, the landscape does look less appealing when you end up in the black marsh area. Kotu Garva & Haj Motas are so overdone in the dlcs/chapter zones. Would've been nice to see a Swamp Leviathan or something instead of rehashed fauna.

I really like the overland and most of the quests were fun and interesting. Considering where Blackwood is, I didn't really expect many new monsters. Thankfully none of of the dungeons are those complex mazes like some before. For dailies you want to be able to get in, complete quest and get out. The only underwhelming thing for me, was the deadlands itself. It just feels like it was just tacked on later because the devs realized they needed a dolmen type event.

It reminds me of roaming around Cyrodiil. I have yet to find any part of the game map you can't access like the other chapters. If ya can't have PVE Cyrodiil, this is the next best thing.

IMO there's been a sharp decline in quality/creativity since Murkmire (I didn't like the zone, but it's quite unique and it's clear that a lot of thought went into it).

Elsweyr was OK, but the zone is extremely annoying in terms of navigation, and the number of buildings that can't even be entered is ridiculous. The architecture and furniture is pretty neat, albeit fairly niche in terms of which houses it works well in.

Southern Elsweyr: same as Northern, except neon to the point that I honestly (I am actually serious here; I have to turn the in-game brightness down when I do there) worry it's going to give me a seizure sometimes.

The two DLC dungeons that came out during the Elsweyr year are among my absolute lease favorite in the game.

Greymoor: serious letdown. I hate Blackreach, and the above-ground section of the area is completely underwhelming. It all feels very phoned in. Kyne's Aegis introduced no sets worth running, and the trial itself is totally forgettable, so for me personally, there's no reason to run it. I'll give them credit for Unhallowed Grave though (whenever that came out; I consider it part of Greymoor); I hadn't had that much fun in a dungeon in a long time when it came out.

Antiquities are fun, but you run out of content fairly quickly save the awful grind for some of the motifs. I was hoping that they'd be regularly introducing more furnishing items than has been the case too.

Markarth: better than Greymoor at least in terms of zone story and the architecture in the city itself, but outside of that it's Greymoor 2.0 when it comes to the overland aesthetic. The dungeons that came out around that time are pretty decent.

Vateshran Hollows... ugh. I appreciate the work that they put into it, but it's just miserable for me, and a lot of it is because the mechanics are just clunky (that minotaur boss, the add craziness at the final boss that makes targeting one of the chained adds nearly impossible).

Blackwood: I'm not using a companion, so I can't speak to that; maybe it makes the DLC really fun for people. I haven't done a whole lot of content besides exploring the overland, but I find that really, really uninspired in terms of aesthetics. Maybe the public dungeons and delves and Rockgrove are awesome and will change my opinion, I don't know. But the effort that went into some of the stuff (overland feels recycled, as does some of the furnishings) seems minimal.

What happened to the DLC and their corresponding expansion zones being so different from each other? Morrowind and Clockwork City. Summerset and Murkmire. Why have they started just kind of extending the existing DLC zones in their expansions????

I haven't bought it, but not because it's underwhelming. It's a nice area and the main story quest got off to a good start. I wrote an impassioned plea not to ruin the companions with unobtainable armour, but nobody listened. So I'll wait for a cheapie or a freebie.

I have mixed feelings about the zone. Geologically, I like the hilliness of the zone, however the zone itself is a bit lifeless. There's virtually no NPCs walking the streets of Leyawiin. It's a literal ghost town. The same is also true for the other settlements, although Gideon has some extra life within its walls.

For me the biggest dislike is a missing group activity, which would have counted for a 3rd daily that is missing in Blackwood. Molag Bal used dolmens to connect Coldharbour with Nirn. I feel like the oblivion portals should have opened a gateway for Mehrune's army to pour out into the Blackwood lands and cause chaos. It could have been an epic battle event as more portals open up in the vicinity before the eventual big portal and boss fight. Once the boss is down, adventurers enter the main portal for another epic battle to push back Mehrune's in his home tuff, the Deadlands. Adventurers work their way up to the tower, reach the sigil stone, defeat the Deadric prince boss that guards it, and shut down the portals. A worthy evolution to the open world group-play content in ESO (a mini-trial of sorts). Ahh well.. Can't have it all :)

I noticed this too. In some scenarios, the additional context and lore dialogs were replaced with "remind me what we're doing again?", literally right after a dialog where that was just explained. The writers even poke fun about it in some dialogs where they flat out call you an idiot (though in a more politically correct approach). So I'm not exactly sure what's going on. The writers are aware of it, but proceed to do it anyway.

I like the landscape and the general atmosphere (not including Deadlands), but it feels empty.

When I'm traveling through other zones I always encounter something. Lost backpack and a skeleton, bandits gathering around a campfire, lone alith wandering around.

In Blackwood I somehow only see frogs and maybe a couple of crocodiles. It doesn't feel like there is a lot happening around and those random NPC on the roads (even though they are fun and I like them!) look out of place.
They act like they are happily walking an often travelled road, but I would rather expect to see someone being attacked by wild animals or lost around the swamps and very unhappy about the weather.

It just doesn't feel right to meet a guy worried about his wedding dress in the middle of nowhere. Seeing as he is sort of archaeologist I can easily imagine both him and his fiancee around a camp in one of those ruins! Why there are no camps in the ruins? Am I missing something???
