Too much XP need a way of disabling it

  • Firesnakearies
I'm level 24, and only 1/4th of the way through Stormhaven. Haven't even done any of the level 20 dungeons yet. My current quests are level 18 and gray to me.

I'd love to turn off my XP gain for awhile!

Yes I don't know why MMO developers don't build in the ability to either turn off experience or store it for use later when you want to use it and make it so that you can use it all at once or little bits and achieve the pace you want in leveling.

This is one thing MMO developers really should consider.
  • Firesnakearies
It could be right there on the gameplay settings screen, underneath the disable helm option. Nice and simple.

VR content will slow you down its only like 46exp per mob killed and you get about 90% of a VR rank if you do all the quests in each zone. I am sure getting VR ranks will be much easier when craiglorn hits though.

You complained about enchanting level speed at 8. While it is far slower than other at 8 is not exactly slow leveling. So for some bizarre reason I don't think normally you like slow leveling, just sayin.

I find myself at lvl 37.5 or so, 2 quests left in Shadowfen. Don't do any grinding for xp. I do farm for crafting materials a lot, but that shouldn't really effect xp.
I'd love a way to turn off xp temporarily. It really kills my fun when I start a zone and the mobs are all trivial. Or when all of my quests are trivial. Go into a cave? trivial.
Trivial loot code is annoying because I outlevel everything s o quickly.

If they'd bump it to 10 levels or so instead of 5, it'd take most of my problems away.
Or just let us pause our xp.

I know a lot of single player games have the option to autolevel or not to autolevel. I think that would be a great option when you're ready for level 24 you go in and click a button you get your attribute point, skill point and any accumulated xp gets applied to the next level.

I'm curious how you were level 21 when you started Stormhaven. I just started it and I'm level 16 -- after doing every quest, dolmen, dungeon and boss in Glenumbra. *scratches head*

If he's exploring and killing every mob he sees, he's mob grinding which is a good way to level all by itself, add to doing content with your guild and yes that would do it.

But reducing xp isn't the way to go unless you make it mandatory to play just the way he plays. I don't craft, don't kill every mob I see all the time, I grind dungeon bosses for blues and I'm right where I should be. So if he does everything and doesn't adjust his play style he will be over leveled which isn't the games fault.

If you go straight from quest to quest only you will be short for the level of the next zone.

Apparently different play styles leads to under- or over-levelling. And some like to rush to endgame, others don't.

Obviously, reducing xp gains would antagonize a lot of people, but an "xp off" switch would be fine as nobody would be forced to use it. I don't understand why anyone would oppose to that. An "xp bank" would be luxury, as it seems it would help for the grindy parts later in the game.

Well said. I think most people would be fine (myself included) with just being able to disable XP for particular things at particular times. It's impossible to predict how much XP is left in any one zone/area.

As I've been watching my leveling (or over leveling) closer I've found that playing too much in Cyrodiil, opening chests, and killing too many random mobs/beasts are big factors. The ability to turn off XP on any or all of these I think would solve any issues.

Yes, leveling pre Veteran is fast, but it gets annoyingly(is that even a word O.o?) long from V1 to V10.
  • Firesnakearies
Yeah, I don't think anyone is asking for a blanket reduction of XP awarded that would affect all players. We just want a toggle-able option (that defaults to off, obviously) to shut down or slow down our own XP gain for a time. I can't imagine how that could be a problem for anyone.

I don't really do pvp, but I gather and do lockpicking a lot my time on the side of my regular questing. As much as I would like to agree with you, I simply can't. I cleared Stonefalls (5-19), Shadowfen (20-29), and ended up in Eastmarch (30-40) and The Rift (40-45? I think?) in my early 30s. I'm currently level 37 and reaching the end of Eastmarch main quests, and the beginning of The Rift main quests. Am I bothered by this? No, not really, my survivablity against most of the mobs I'm faced with is pretty outrageous for an archer built Nightblade.

I'm "married" and have the ring on so I do get that scaled 10% bonus of experience and still level at a decent pace. Am I leveling too quickly? I'd like to say no, but there are some that may disagree. I shouldn't be facing level 42+ mobs and annihilating them at level 29-32, but I was. I'm not sure if it's my class that needs a nerf, or the gear I had that needs a nerf. *chuckles*

I can say this however, if you do have the ring of mara, perhaps taking it off and seeing how fast you level without it will help?

Just to clarify, at no point have I asked for Xo to be reduced or changed in any way.

I don't think others have eiother.

All I asked was for an option so that I can toggle the XP off if I want.

Reading the new PTS patch notes and seeing this
The XP awarded for killing enemy player characters has been doubled.
XP rewards for completing the quest to kill 20 enemy player characters have also been increased.

the option for me to toggle it off is even more important.
  • Firesnakearies
It feels like this would be a very easy option to add. Maybe I'm wrong, maybe it would be a big technical challenge for some reason. But I can't imagine so.

What I want to know is if there's some philosophical reason why the devs wouldn't want to offer this option to players.

It's a shame to be ALWAYS overleveled...if you do all the quests and bosses and exploration, right on the second big region you're 4 or 5 levels higher than quests and mobs (and it's way worse if you dare accompany some of your guildmates for Cyrodiil sessions..either PvE or PvP).

It's frustrating for those of us who don't especially want to level quickly AND want some sort of challenge while leveling (facerolling all the content is BORING).

So yeah, an XP slider/toggle could be very handy. If someone post a poll about if maybe it will get noticed...

its not the quest xp high, but the PVP xp is high... so, asking to decrease the pve xp, because u and ur guild love to pvp, go play pvp and leave pve xp and pve alone...

I dont play PVP and I am behind, the quests are overleveled for me!! I am rank 7 and I normally getting the half level, by doing rank 8 quests. And its more challenging... I am afraid u have to choose, if u play PVP, dont complain about the pve xp content at all.

I could also be rank 10 by now, if I loved that kind of pvp. But I dont and I dont like gaining xp by killing players. So I dont.

They may have to remove xp from pvp.... But my problem is not the xp, I just dont like premades. I personally dont see pvp as a content.

And here is the interesting part with u, just to prove u that its not the pve content. I just finished the entire Glenumbra and moved into stormhaven. But even if I did ALL, except 4 bosses, I moved there lvl 16. So you got 5 lvl's with PVP. Thats why you must choose...

Here is my maps and I am 17! Look what I ve done

I'm the sort of player that enjoys a bit of everything but am in zero hurry to get to end game. I will enjoy endgame when I do get there though.

I enjoy PvP now and again, I might spend a couple of nights simply going around gathering crafting mats and levelling my crafting, sometimes I want to work through the quests.

However, I've hit a little problem.

I'm level 23 and have only recently started Stormhaven, some of the quests are grey before I even start, many of the others I can stand there and spam the left mouse button ignoring bothering to block or move etc.

I like challenging content, I don't like faceroll content.

One of the main reasons I left my last game and came to this one is because my previous one had become such a faceroll game, and I wanted something that would offer me challenging content. I don't want to be told it's challenging at later levels, I want my journey to end level to be a fun challenging experience too.

It's not that the levels are set wrong, it's just that there are too many ways of gaining XP, I run into locked chests all the time when I'm gathering mats, having to purposely not open them is a little disappointing.

Wondered if anyone else felt the same or if it's just me?
I heard this in my last MMO too, basically some people just level up too fast, and sadly you're one of them. Most of the rest of us don't have this problem, we struggle gathering materials (alchemy and enchanting at least), and we are only just above the level of the quest we're doing.

I've heard the request to turn off the exp before, and it's a minority request at best, So I doubt that the devs will implement it.

Thats why I am against pvp content. I am classic, the first year of world of warcraft (surelly other mmos as well, beyond wow and older than wow, but wow is my first mmo) was ideal, open world pvp, without bgs and areas for PVP only... This is the result of it, pvp become a content and people have to seperate themselves, basically I am pve/pvp player, but not pvp content. Since the newest mmos, luck in pvp open world quality and they produce pvp as a content... I play only pve.

And thats why I say to the guy, that he must choose, he cant be both.

I am still thinking there are some differences in Factions or something, or that some are not telling us everything they are doing to be so over leveled for their quests.

Maybe this has something to do with it. This is from Quest Achievements

    First Zone
    Ebonheart - Stonefalls - Complete 69 quests
    Daggerfall - Glenumbra - Complete 61 quests
    Aldmeri - Auridon - Complete 46 quests

    Second Zone
    Ebonheart - Deshaan - Complete 59 Quests
    Daggerfall - Stormhaven - Complete 64 quests
    Aldmeri - Grahtwood - Complete 41 quests

    Third Zone
    Ebonheart - Shadowfen - Complete 62 quests
    Daggerfall - RivenSpire - Complete 43 Quests
    Aldmeri - Greenshade - Complete 45 quests

So in the first three zones for each faction it comes out to be

    190 Quests for Ebonheart Pact
    168 Quests for Daggerfall
    132 Quests for Aldmeri

Now, that by itself is not evidence of anything because we don't know the total experience given for all those quests but the difference in totals could make a difference.

I am in the Aldmeri Dominion and find myself a level or 2 behind in spite of completing every quest i can. I'll have to start a character in another faction and see if that indeed makes a difference.

I also completed the two starter islands for Daggerfall and found more quests than the 61 needed for the achievement in Glenumbra (cant remember how many, but still found some after it was complete).

I just had a quick look at an online guide and it lists 67 for Glenumbra and 24 for the two starter islands (15 on Stros M'Kai and 9 on Betnikh), presuming I did them all, I had done 91 quests before I moved on to Stormhaven, not the 61 needed for the Glenumbra achievement

Don't forget, not all quests are started by a quest marker, for example only Friday I killed a yellow cutthroat in a town that started a quest.

I also achieved one entire level just opening up locked chests while gathering crafting mats, they give you around 1% of your levels worth of XP each time you open one, and I got the 100 chest achievement.

I'm now purposely not opening any locked chests I find, which is a shame.

And to repeat what I said earlier, I had spent just two evenings in PvP to get to the point I was in my OP, both only for a few hrs and I died a lot in them, I doubt I got much XP while there to be honest, so PvP wasn't the main cause, but I do want to do more and hopefully will get better.

Lotro sold an XP disabler in their store for quite a lot of their Turbine points, it was only usable on one character, not account wide, and became one of their biggest sellers, so I'm not convinced there is really that few of us that would like the option.

Especially with a lore based game like ESO, for every person that wants to level as quickly as possible, do all the quests and get to the Vetran stuff, there is at least as many people who want to explore the land, take in every single book, spend just as many days crafting, fishing or whatever as they do questing.

I also like to explore every inch of dungeons, so I'm not just going in, killing the mobs needed to get to the boss, I'm checking every bookcase, every basket etc, hence killing all the mobs that attack while doing so, all adds to xp

Again, it's a simple solution. Give players the ability to toggle on/off XP for PvP (and/or other things). It would have zero effect on other players who don't need the option. It would also allow more XP to be put in PvP for those who just want to play PvP and still level. It's a win/win solution.

I realize that the achievement is not all quests but the fact that the achievement for Auridon is so much lower than the other two means that the total number of quests for Auridon is less.

My play style so far has been to do every quest I find, get all the skyshards, finish everything on the map except the group dungeon and explore each zone as much as possible. In addition I always do the starter dungeon (for the lockpicks) and the beginner zones.

I just started a new character in Daggerfall and will see how well I do with it, level wise compared to my Aldmeri character.

I completely agree with the OP.
Exp are way to easy to get. Sure, everyone isnt level 50 yet but they are not suppose too!!

I would want to cut exp from everything, so each level took longer and you get settled in your abilities and what you can do...AT YOUR LEVEL.

I also would like a feature Everquest had. "Hell levels". This means that lets say level 30 takes as long to level to 31 and it took to level from 25-30.

I'd like to see these "hell" levels on 30 and 45 to start with.
Then SLOW THE HELL DOWN on veteran leveling. NO ONE should have the highest rank and all veteran skills YET!

    Hello guys.

I totally agree that sometimes you are forced to skip content because your level is too high and you want to keep the game challenging. And it's very frustrating for me too. The solution may be reducing amount of XP earned. On the other hand there are people that don't want XP amount to be reduced for any reason and I also understand them. And there is another group of people that want to stop xp earning at all for some time.

So I offer solution that will satisfy everyone: to create an option that regulates the amount of XP you earn in percents of normal state. It could be a slider from 0% to 100% (110% for those who will pay the subscription for ESO Plus) increments of 10% (or 1%).

So everybody will have a possibility to play as they want. After all, this is Elder Scrolls universe. And in Elder Scrolls you can be whoever you want, do whatever you want and play as you want.

    Thank's everybody for this conversation.
