SKILL is most important thing in any game

People should understand that without dedication and practice and good skills, you will not get as good as you should be at any game.

When I was about 12 I used to play horse with my friends (horse is basketball game where one person shoots a shot and if they make it other people have to do exact same shot or they get a letter H O R S E, all 5 letters and you lose) BTW this is probably one of the most skillful games in the world. I used to win most times but not enough so I devised a great shot standing on side of my boat (parked on side of garage). Where from that vantage point you could only see the backboard but not the rim. You would have to throw the ball up and over the backboard close enough to go in the basket (this takes much skill and practice). So I practiced for about 3 hours until I could make it 90-95%.

I couldn't wait until the next day to play neighbor kid, johnny, well he came over and sure enough I did the skillful shot 5 times in a row and of course he missed every time. we played 2 times actually and of course I won again with 6 shots. I couldn't wait to go to school the next day and tell everyone about how I destroyed Johnny, but my friend Carl said that would make me a jerk so I didn't say anything.

But other neighbor kids I played who would win sometimes before I would now beat in a matter of minutes. I told them it was all skill and even said they could come to my house and practice, but they were just lazy and had no motivation or skill. My brother did spend about 4 hours one day practicing but could only make the shot about 40% on good day, I would beat him every game easily.

Some of the kids started saying I was cheating but they were just jealous because they are BAD players. OMG. Some of them said let's just play the game 1 time without using that shot. Can you believe just because they have no skill to do this one thing they wanted to ruin the whole game. And I said look I don't have all day to play, taking away that shot would slow down the whole game, might as well go inside and play WoW instead. I mean can you believe these people who have much lower skills than me wanted to dumb down the game and make it slow and inefficient and WHY, so maybe I wouldn't destroy them. So git gud people or find and easier game because HORSE is only for the best of the best...

So you are a one trick pony....? Not everyone wants to be the best of the best. And that is perfectly fine as this is a GAME.

Exactly it's just a game. That's the point I'm trying to make. Should I have added a smileyface or did you think I was over the top enough to know I am making a joke/lesson.

    1. You are violating rules of forums by creating a thread about your other thread.
    2. What you were suggesting is not to stop that one shot you were using, but to lower the basket to shoulder height, and make sure everyone throw the ball from 2m tops. A thing that the guy in your story, would find boring.

Lets have a little fun with this scenario and look at it from a different perspective while tying it into how it applies to ESO. I assume that this post is thick with sarcasm, but this mentality exists... so still.

HORSE is a game, sure, but it is a game that is fun because it was designed to make players more adaptable and to test their ability to improvise. Yes there is a winner, but the point of playing isn't to win at that game in a vacuum, but to get better at playing basketball as a whole.

The in-game analog to HORSE would be a dummy parsing competition.

Now... Lets say you found an exploit. A series of abilities, actions, and positioning that allowed you to parse WAY higher than anyone else currently could... but that would also be impossible to replicate in an actual dungeon run. And that it was difficult to pull off without a lot of practice.

The first time you have a parsing competition with someone, yeah... it would be fun to pull this trick out and wipe the floor with them. Once. They would be impressed with your ability and would think that it was a cool thing to be able to do. But after that one time? Probably not. Sure they could learn how to do it themselves; you would even show them how if they wanted to learn. But why would they? At the end of the day, the competition isn't just about who can parse higher by any means necessary. They want to compete with people who use builds that are actually dungeon viable because then the results of the competition have meaning in the broader scheme of things.

Chances are, if you refused to do anything but that one broken exploity build, they would stop competing against you. And not because they were jealous or had less skill, but because the skill you were using had no application outside of the training game its self and they saw no reason to learn to do a thing that wouldn't help them get better at the thing that the training game was meant to help them improve at.

Same with those kids and HORSE. They didn't stop playing because you were better or more skilled than them, they stopped playing because the skill they would have to learn to be able to compete would be worthless at making them better at playing Basketball. The reason people play HORSE is to showcase and improve on their basketball skill, not to learn how to do weird unrealistic shots that they would never make in a real game.

I see what you did there ;)

The OP seems a little off-topic with regard to the title, so I'll just respond to the latter. Skill is important in single-player games, in group games it's more about cooperation, and in the case of MMOs it's about grinding gear/points/whatever. This is how it works.

None of those kids except me intended or did play real basketball. They only liked HORSE, obviously because of the superior skill required beyond any other game really. I probably ruined the game for them but I can't worry about people who have no skills as winning is all that counts, isn't it?

My shot was a little cheesy and they hated it but perfectly within the rules and design of the game. I have to say yeah it took some practice but really what made it just so fantastic is it was SKILL based, which everyone knows is the key to being great at games. Sorry to say they just weren't good enough. :)

Yeah, I even created videos of my amazing skill, eventually I did find some other kids in the neighborhood who could make the shot about 90%. Any new kids that came to the neighborhood we would bring over and just destroy them. I mean yeah they were brand new some never even touch a basketball. Then we would make fun of them at school it was really fun.

My parents didn't like what was going on but my mother thought as long as I am happy not to do anything. A couple of times my father made a statement that it was unsportsmanlike and he didn't respect what I was doing but he listened to my mother so didn't do anything for years. But then seemingly right at the peak of my amazing HORSE domination, he sold that boat.

OMG I was devastated. I tried and tried but could not find another shot that was that great. Kids would come over and play and even WIN sometimes. It was so terrible for me, I wasn't the best any more. But the funny thing was the game became so much more popular and people were playing all day every day and I made a bunch of new friends and I have to admit life just got better after that.

Maybe it was just a weird house rule, but when I used to play horse you couldn't use the same shot more than once in a game.

Yeah, some kids tried to 'dumb down' the game by making rules like that. But you got to realize what makes HORSE the greatest game in the world is that it is 'fast paced' and based on SKILL. If you can only do the most SKILLFUL shot half the time, you are only making the game last twice as long.

I always though the SKILL was having the versatility to make a variety of shots from a variety of locations under a variety of conditions. Having one trick shot that you can make better than anyone else is a lot less impressive than being able to make every possible shot your opponent can come up with.

Also, your story makes you sound like a jerk.

Well you got to understand as a teenager all that mattered was winning and destroying people with less skill than me. After I lost my best shot, it was very hard and I realized most of the people were actually better than me without that shot. But without all that pressure to be superior than others, I think I was able to become a better person. I just feel bad for all the people I mocked and ridiculed over a silly game.
