During the Dawn Era, the Orsimer were originally a tribe of Aldmer who followed Trinamac. When Trinamac tried to stop the elves who later became the Chimer, he was defeated/eaten by Boethia and returned as Malacath and all his follwers were transformed into Orcs. (Similar to how the Chimer became the Dunmer).
Also, Betmer is still not a thing. As said above, Mer denotes Elf ancestry, which beastfolk aren't.
Huzzah!!!
Other theories speak of them being descendants of Aldmeri settlers, proved by the visual similarity of Ohmes and Ohmes-raht to Men and Mer, especially Bosmer. The Khajiiti creation myth suggests the Bosmer and Khajiit to have common ancestors; Azurah having taken the forest people that were torn between the shape of beast and man and given them the many shapes of the Khajiit.
You are right guys re betmer, I just didn't want to call them beasts (which I guess isn't derogatory). Also the origin of orcs is debatable, but I wouldn't classify them as beastfolk.

The suffix of "Mer" designates Elf ancestry.
So "Betmer" doesn't really fit.
Just my 2 drakes...
Huzzah!
Also, yes. Orcs are Elves.

Well....Other theories speak of them being descendants of Aldmeri settlers, proved by the visual similarity of Ohmes and Ohmes-raht to Men and Mer, especially Bosmer. So there's some potential there for discussion.

Betmer is the elven name for beastfolk because "mer" means "folk" but is understood to only refer to elves. The beast races of Tamriel are not actually descended from Elves. Some possibly share ancestory with some (referring to Khajiit and Bosmer potentially coming from the Ooze and not Aldmeris), but calling them all "Betmer" is painting in too broad strokes..
