Players appearing as black figures in overland

I’m fairly new to ESO and just wondering if anyone else has the same issue. Nearly everywhere I go in overland players are appearing as blank black figures for a good minute then change to what they are suppose to look like. In populated areas they like dolmens or Auridon wayshrine they stay black figures. It seems to have got worse after the last update. I’m in Australia and my internet speed is 48mb download and 18mb upload. Could this be a internet speed on my end I can upgrade my plan but don’t want to if it won’t fix the issue?
Any advice will be appreciated

Unfortunately there’s nothing you can do on your end. It’s just years of neglecting performance issues.

To add some more detail, when other players get within your visual range (actually quite a bit before that) the server will start sending you data about them.

The first type of data to arrive is basic info about the player, including their location and heading. At this point, your client hasn't received any data yet about their gear, equipped weapons etc.

If a player gets in your visual range before the server has send you all the extra info about them, your client will render them as black because it doesn't have those details yet.

As more data comes in, they'll start to be rendered with more detail.

Ideally, with less lag, your client would already have all data needed to render them correctly by the time they get into visual range.

Thanks for the info. So increasing my internet speed isn’t going to help with the server lag?

Depends on just how bad your internet is. What does your in-game ping display?

PS: My in-game ping is usually 90-110 while my real network latency to the ESO server(s) is 40-50

I’m on console so not sure how to check ping I’ll have a look into it soon and let you know.

Not sure about console, but on the PC you have the in-game option to show your fps and server latency.

    Settings/Interface/Performance

you can turn on both Framerate and Latency ...

That's not too bad, so i'd say most of your lag is unfortunately server side ...

    What Xbox do you have?

I had an Xbox one and people were just black figures for ages. Bought an Xbox s-series and it never happens anymore, even if there's 50 people on screen.

Honestly I was going to say it sounded more like a problem with your hardware. The behavior described sounded to me like a computer that just couldn't keep up due to a bad graphic card, cpu or whatnot. On PC there is even an addon that can help poor hardware by doing what you described, creating stand in figures until your computer can handle loading them fully. Would not surprise me to hear that the console versions might have that built in, so the game doesn't play like complete garbage on older versions.

    It could be that then.

I had an original Xbox. Played on EU sever and l live in Wales, over 100mb download speed and 30mb upload. So good net, close to server.

But I had like 10-20 seconds when portng into a busy zone when everyone was just a black icon.

As soon as I got a new Xbox that went.

I'm not saying the fact you're an Aussie on a NA/EU server isn't a factor as I don't know, it also might be, but for me personally it was a hardware thing.
