Edit: as for 1. things like "tell me more" from persuasion or intimidate usually result in them giving you a little bit of information about the fight or something. I can only recall times when I persuaded for more help and the npc would tell me a clue or two about how to beat a puzzle in the room they are sending me to, of course even without the tip you can usually figure it out anyway. One time I intimidated an npc to hand over a relic while tomb-exploring and she did, I was able to "press e" on enemies to root them in place. I presume if I didn't she would do it instead.

Wow. So am I right for not taking these skills if I don't mind paying gold or doing a part of a quest?

Just peeked in her store, intimidated her again, and looked in her store once more, no change.

Persuade and Intimidate can be huge for rolling through quests, I consider them two points well spent. Sometimes it will just allow me to skip parts of the quest altogether, like for example I was doing a quest (I believe in Rift) and I was going to have to go find some herbs to create a tea to help this girl come out of coma, and instead I used Intimidate to just shake her a bit, and she told me the information I needed right then and there.

That's one example. There are also some where they will give you an ally to do the quest with you if you Persuade them, so you might have a healer or dps to help with the quest.

The results seem to vary but overall it usually provides some assistance with completing quests easier, so I'm a pretty big fan.

They are useful skills to have. I had one quest with the ogres in storm haven (can't rmbr it now), but I had fought and ground my way to the top of a mountain in order to collapse a cave, and spoke to the NPC at the top who told me I needed a pick axe which was halfway back down the mountain again, and I couldn't have his because he needed it to defend himself, a bit of intimidation and he handed it over lol, so off I went and left him defenceless with a group of beserking ogres. The skills can just save you some unnecessary to-ing and fro-ing that's all

I use both of them often and it saves alot of footwork sometimes.

That stupid frog racing quest required both if I remember correctly. Quest is not really worth the time, but the ability to shorten quests is nice.

the gold costs skyrocket (i had one quest with a pricetag of 1k if i didn't have intimidate or persuade.) and you can skip a lot of BS fetch quests.
I love quests, and this game has some great ones, but I don't want to fetch a dude's mail every time I need to know where the next quest objective is.

Can you even get past the Main Story quest line without Persuade and Intimidate? I seem to remember one of the last quests (trying to avoid spoilers) seemed to require them. Maybe there was another dialogue option that I couldn't see because I already had Persuade and Intimidate. If so, disregard this.

You don't need the perk to see the option, it will just tell you can't use that option if you try to use it and don't have it trained already.

I literally spent points on intimidations and persuasion for the sole purpose of getting past bugged quests. As a side benefit I have saved 100s of gold and a bit of time, but if gold/time is not a concern then by all means do not spend the points. Note: the avoided gold cost starts to add up quickly - apparently - at higher levels.
