GPU overheating with ESO? ( a matter of curiosity)

Hmm, I just noticed something
Usually whem I'm playing I monitor my computer status, just to make sure nothing is wrong.

Usually I Got my GPU (RX580) on an averange of a 70º Celsius (Or 158 °F for those of USA who insists on using literally the worst units of measument for everything #USAADOPTTHEMETRICSYSTEM), and that maintains on most of the game enviroment...

Except dungeons
Yesterday I was monitoring and the momkent I steped into a dungeon my GPU reached 85ºC (185ºF), peaking in 87°C (188,6 ºF).

That moment I closed the game and went to reconfigure my Graphics card to see if I could do something to relief it's strain, I bought two new fans... with that i managed to reduce to 80ºC in dungeons (176º F), and in open world goes down to 67ºC (152,6ºF).

The question is: The common sense would make-me belief that open world enviromment should produce more strain to the graphics unit than inside world, but in ESO that turns out to be the oposite. why is that?

This game is a poorly optimised mess, so yeah, believe it. Perfectly possible, totally "normal".

I have a 5700XT. Runs everything fine at Ultra, except some specific areas where the framerate just chugs. I mean chugs- Drops right down to ~19FPS. Doesn't matter what settings, I have set everything to the lowest and it still happens. No idea.

Furthermore I have to keep the frames limited. VSync to 60, or else the temp goes well above 80c and GPU fans kick up as though the damn thing is gonna take off. The game doesn't seem to limit what it demands of your hardware at all; but at the same time it doesn't use it efficiently whatsoever.

There doesn't appear to be any logic or sense to this, that I can tell.

I have this exact same issue if I try to run at high fps. Had to lock my frame rate to 60 to stop the overheating. Currently 67 degrees average.

ooof. this explains why my computer just randomly restarted. (which is usually a sign of gpu or cpu overheating) its never done that with any other game that i've played on it. guess its time to fiddle with framerate settings

I've noticed my fans blasting every now and then for 5-10 seconds near certain graphical effects, in particular big fights with ice AoEs and water in combat, and certain light/particle effects in housing. While I think the fans are overcorrecting, and I can adjust that, it's definitely related to large amounts of lighting & particle effects.

I have 1660 Ti and at least for me I haven't had similar issues.
Maybe its Nvidia thing, or maybe your settings are somehow much higher requiring GPU to work overtime
    Awake, but at what cost

Hmm activating the vsync droped My GPU temperature substancially
Right Now it's stable at 55ºC, and in dungeons It manages to stay below 70ºC

I mean the game mainly runs single core CPU so that shouldn't be happening..

Have the exact same issue with RX580 and know of another person with the same card having the same issue. lol

Check your fps counter, as I had an issue where my fps was waaay out of whack, and that was causing my gpu to get abnormally hot. I had to go and limit it in the user file to fix the issue.

Drivers are bad. Roll back some versions and use ddu. Checkout techpowerup for older versionsof amd drivers and guru3d for ddu. I run 20.2.2 whql. Make sure you stick to whql versions. One day they'll make a decent driver. You can always undervolt it without OC if you know what you're doing.

I got a 5700xt running constant 120fps@1440 with the ini mod, besides chugfest cyro fights when it gets to 60fps. Keep your textures up, but turn down reflections or turn them off. Then turn down shadows to lowest. View distance max. Turn down or off other post effects.

    I noticed a large boost in frames 15 to 20% going from a 3700x to a 5900x.
This recent update has made me sad. Sad for the game. Sad for the community. Sad to pay whatever it is now. I want the previous eso back.

Some settings are not supported by some cards/drivers or specific combo's of the two.

The previous update(U29) I noticed my GPU going nuts as well(80-85C), turned out nvidia does not support FXAA for this game. Even though most of the time it works fine, with most updates. Adding ESO to the graphic settings programs, and turning FXAA off made my game run normal again(54-56C).

Check your GPU and drivers to see what they support for the game, and place your in-game settings that way.

PS: I have a RTX 2080 TI gaming X trio.
PPS: It was actually adding ESO to the graphic settings program that showed me FXAA was in my case not supported for this game.

I've noticed my PC fans are going like crazy since last patch.
It's not overly hot in my house yet (beginning of spring)...have they done something? :3

Radeon is just slightly hotter than nvidia in general. Rx580 also is not a high tier card. That temp should be expected.

Also check ur computer case, most overheating is caused by poor ventilation. Cases without front intake is generally straight up garbage.

welp...this is the only game my friends, guildmates with which Im playing are having so bad problems like here arleady described on par with blue screens when on trials....they can play newer games, with higher requirments on their compuntes, laptops and they never have such problems as with ESO on not even on high settings

I forget the name, but the big aurora style furnishing that was in crown crates for 100 gems a while back... I've been able to reliably make my computer power itself down by standing inside that furnishing. I was in a friend's house when it happened and after a few attempts to get back into game I had to ask them to temporarily remove it so I would be able to log back in without my machine saying nope.

There's clearly an issue with some of the in game effects that can lead to problems like this.

LOL at the comment about the US system of Weights and Measures. I will say, I have really tried to personally convert to metric, but the one I struggle most with is temperature.

In a science lab, the metric system makes great sense. For normal day to day, however, I do get the argument behind Fahrenheit. 0 is really cold outside, 100 is really hot outside. The 2 most common ways humans use temperature units are for either the weather or their oven. For weather at least, Fahrenheit is arguably a more intuitive unit than Celsius.

To answer the question, I dont really notice this game as being an outlier on my GPU temp. I have a 1080TI and a very well cooled rig. I am usually at 100 FPS and the highest graphics settings (with a few adjustments).

Fun Story, I build my first computer after DOOM 3 literally (not figuratively) melted the graphics care in my old Dell. Dont let the magic burn out.

This is prob a cause for a lot of crashes and BSODs, but many don't realize it bc they don't monitor temps.

How hot is your system running with that fps and resolution? I tried turning off everything and running it with the same fps and rez you're using, but ESO still overheated my computer. The only thing that works for me is locking frame rate to 60.

They have changed the UserSettings.ini line:
    FROM SET MinFrameTime.2 "0.01000000"
    TO SET MinFrameTime.2 "0.00000000"

Which means it used to be limited to 100fps, but is now unlimited. (use 1/FPS to set your fps cap). Makes you wonder what else they have changed in there.

@CrashTest I have a custom open loop so 32c water temp 50gpu/60-64hotspot. Ambient temp is about 26 I think. I only have freesync and antilag turned on. Everything else is default. My voltage curve is 850@800mhz,950@1429mhz,1150@2050mhz. Powerlimit is 50%. Before my open loop I had my fans ramped to keep it stable at 72c.

I'd go into your radeon settings and delete the ESO profile and just run on the global profile to see if that changes anything. At least reset all the settings to default. See how that goes, turn on anti lag and freesync. Then try undervolt it dropping down 10mv at a time, you can do this live ingame with the overlay.
This recent update has made me sad. Sad for the game. Sad for the community. Sad to pay whatever it is now. I want the previous eso back.

i believer there is a setting for those so that you can lower them.

What resolution is your monitor? Reducing your screen resolution can help. Particularly if you are trying to drive a very high resolution monitor like 4K or 1440P.
