Why can't I inspect other players? (Noob question)

It's a game, not Industrial Espionage. The fact that people think their build is that important is pretty silly.
It is not Perfect World like game - so I really like that there is no such function.
Inspect is in plenty of non-Perfect World/non-"eastern f2p" games. I first ran into it in WoW, for instance. And then in SWtOR.

Pretty much this. It doesn't matter what you are wearing in ESO because people can change the appearance of all armor to look like something else. You can wear light armor and make it appear like heavy armor and vice versa. You can be in a full set of heavy and put on a costume that makes it look like you are in a bath robe.
The inspect systems I've seen before, had no problem with 'visual' gear or changes.
All gear spying would do here is the same thing it does in other MMOs, allow toxic judgy players to try to deny you content because you aren't wearing what they think you should for that activity.
I mostly used it to see what people were wearing, so that I could know where they got that Appearance. Much more convenient than having to bother them to ask what set/motif/transmute/costume/whatever they got that look from.

Not that I'm asking for it in this game, just adding some information. /shrug

And I do not play wow or SWtOR now and want this game be different. Like when I start play it.

It was the main reason !

As example I use Fire fox before when it was not like google crom.

It was comfortable. When they start copy google crom i just delete it and use google crom.

Becouse it was better and they remove thingth i like that are not like in google crom.

Just the same people do with this game if it will be just like some thing.

It is just like some thing, but prototype is always better ! So no reason to play a copy.

I know it’s a video game but this just seems like it would be invasive and I wouldn’t want anything to do with a feature like this. Why on earth would I want someone inspecting me and looking at my build without permission? If you are that curious all you have to do is whisper the person and they can decide if they want to share that info.

This isn't WoW, this is ESO. I bet more people don't like that feature then do. It creates judgmental toxicity in a game. Why can't you ask the person what they are wearing. Inspect is like looking underneath someone's skirt to me. Maybe that player you are asking will become a great friend to you, but you wouldn't have known that with inspect. Because you would have inspected and moved on. Missed opportunity to meet a new person. In all the games I have played inspect has been a tool to belittle and harrass not to mention exclude players. This game is not gear centric like WoW where content is gated by what gear you have. WoW chose to make their harder content inaccessible to most of their player base using gear.

I'm not really into letting people see gear info through an inspect feature, but I'm usually willing to share if asked most of the time.

As far as the cosmetics go I don't have a problem with an "inspect style" feature, letting people know what motifs, dyes, costumes, skins, etc are being used. I also don't have a problem sharing this info if asked. Truth be told I think a lot of people just want to avoid that social interaction, no matter how simple it is, which I understand.

You can already trot right on over give them some admiration!

Do you think the owner of the GTO isn't going to mind if you just pop the hood, trunk, help yourself into the interior for a looksie?

Nobody is going to just allow you to start disrobing/disarming them so you can get a good, deep look at their gear/build setup.

But you know how you COULD find out...

    Ask them!

If they're cool, they'll pop the hood, open the truck and give you the tour of their build.

Most people wouldn't be cool with you're "help yourself" attitude towards their loadout. And would definitely lead to griefing, etc. if people could give you the once over before, say, running a trial, dungeon, etc.

There is already a horrible amount of that currently with just the CP levels alone without adding gear/loadout lookie-loos!

@OP I get it tho, I play other MMO and love to gawk too. But in many of those games, gear-shaming is an issue. C'est la vie.

It doesn't matter what you will use it for, it matters what it can be used for. It can be used to inspect gear and if someone thinks you should be wearing gear set A instead of gear set B then all that does it create a toxic environment. If someone wants to know what my outfit style is all they have to do is ask me and ill tell them. We don't need more toxicity in ESO, it has plenty already.

If you're talking about outfits, just whisper or say chat and usually people will reply. Almost daily I get whispers/say chats asking what Im wearing and I reply back with my full outfit styles. Even in dungeons. Legitimately just ask. Normally, people will tell you because their excited someone noticed them. I know I get happy when someone asks. :D

A long time ago I was playing WoW, I was on a “just for fun” alt, a rouge I think. I was in Dalaran minding my own business when a stranger rode up next to me and paused. I really did not think anything of it.
    Then I got a whisper;

    “Your gear sucks.”

And they rode away. I was stunned.

That is why I am glad I don’t have gear inspection in ESO. I have plenty of alts, many of them in less then optimal gear, I don’t need someone criticizing an alt who is wearing at best, “hand me down” gear.

I'm also used to the option from other MMOs but it doesn't bother me at all that ESO doesn't have it, because people are people. I do think it would be a nice addition for those who are into fashion to be able to look at the components and dyes that make up someone's chosen appearance, as an opt in/opt out feature. In my experience even when you can choose whether or not to allow other players to view your real gear, some of them will harass you about looking at it, which is why I'm not bothered that (on PS4 at least) we don't have the option.

It doesn't fundamentally work in ESO because of the Outfitting station. You can make any item look like a different item. An axe look like a sword, for example. You would be like, oh wow, sweet mace dude! And inspect it to find out that it was really a dagger or something else.

Sure but even in EQ2 and SWG when you inspected someone you could see their "appearance" gear, and then separately see their actual gear. WoW transmog is the same, you hover over their gear and it shows you the name of the armor piece they used as transmog.

You can do that, but if it is heavily customized, you will have to ask the owner what they did to it.

Other MMOs will tell you engine size, gas mileage, how much gasoline is in the tank, and what kind of gasoline it is. ESO does not do that.

(Edit: I guess I had this tab open for a lot longer than I thought I did before I replied.)

Now on my 4th week of ESO, soon my plus membership will renew. I see all these players with cool looking stuff, I really want to bring up their paperdoll window and inspect their gear and stuff. This seems like a really basic function of an MMO, right? I haven't been in another MMO in many years (this is my first one) so maybe I'm a bit out to lunch here. Does anyone know why I can't look at other players stuff?

Is it not a cool thing in an MMO to have nice looking clothes and gear, and yet there's no way to "show off your stuff" other than just in passing....it kind of sucks, to be honest. I'd love to understand more what people are carrying and gawk at their cool things.

It really simple let me explain....

Its the ESO community and the average player who stopped this from happening...

In most mmos you can see how the group members are performing. In ESO players are wanting to hide their ability.
In most mmos you can see other peoples gear. In ESO the players are wanting to hide their gear or lack of gear.
In most mmos you can see what loot other people get. In ESO the players want to hide their loot even if they dont want to keep it.

This community is different to most mmo communities. In some ways it is good. In other ways it is horrible.

In the end the average ESO player is doing less than they should in the group, have less then avg quality gear for the content they are getting into and dont want to be asked if they can give their loot away even though the chances are they dont want or need it.

Say any of these things out loud and the community will call you an elitist.

You can show off your stuff with actually showing it, sets in this game do not have a godlike status, motifs have. Inspecting motifs - I have no problems with this idea. Inspecting gear - horrible idea, because it gives a lot of room for trolling, because some unrestrained players from those who think that you should only wear those sets that Alkast said to wear will pour buckets of slop on you even in a normal dungeon.

Not to mention the fact that many are not pleased to feel like the subject of stalking in this MMO.
