I mean, it's real simple for players on the PS4/PS5 like me.

Either they'll keep making content for this game (And other Bethesda IPs) and we'll keep playing it/them and spending money.

Or they won't, and we'll stop playing.

Or if you're REALLY invested in this game, you'll buy an XBox/PC and start from Scratch, forfeiting all your progress and purchases to keep playing, since there's no shared servers.

I sure as hell won't be buying an Xbox to play Elder Scrolls 6 or Fallout 5. Maybe shovel out some cash to upgrade my PC to play them, but I'm kind of indifferent to that kind of lockout.

I'm hoping that Microsoft don't have any involvement. Say what you like about ZOS and the way they've run the game but it has increased in popularity (and in my view quality, YMMV) under their control and I hope that continues. My recollection of the way that Microsoft have been involved in previous MMOs gives me no confidence should they get directly involved in this one.

Well, there is the issue of crown crates which go against Microsoft's terms and policy on gambling boxes. So, if Microsoft wants to stay true to their own word, then we will see a change in that department.

Microsoft has said nothing about crown crates, and their lootbox policy only applies to games developed by Xbox Game Studios from 2019 on.

ESO is not and is not becoming an Xbox Game Studios game, and it certainly did not begin development in 2019 or later.

ETA: For other games on their platforms, they only require the odds to be published, as here:

I think we were already in the process of preparation with all this sever performance improvements and database tunings,
but did they have requirement to "fit" in some server loads, or they are fixing that old spaghetti code only time will show, just couple more months.

Microsoft has bought out Bethesda and Zenimax for quite a sum, yes. Don't worry, they aren't going to let this franchise go anywhere anytime soon, and to be entirely honest I have slightly more faith in Microsoft as a parent company than some of these other game publishers (looking at you, EA and Activision). Hopefully, they'll be able to port the game over to their Azure servers; from what I understand, Azure would be more than capable of handling the demand imposed on the game's servers by Cyrodiil, and then some.

Yeah, which now has me wondering (not for the first time) whether they use any container technologies (ala Docker, Kubernetes, etc) to deploy pre-built images to all the systems that have there in the data center. I guess I could answer that by checking out their job postings. (Edit: Yup, looks like they are building staff in that direction)

Take a look at the content that has come out in the last year. It's gotten steadily weaker and it's all recycled. Then there are the 2 plus years of performance "tests" and issues only to land at "we aren't going to work on cyrodiil until after the sale" policy.

Microsoft can't take control soon enough. Here's hoping they are extremely heavy handed with ZOS to the point that ZOS is actually required to fix performance issues.

Microsoft made Age of Empires - the first series of games I ever played, and a truly legendary series imo. They've made a great many cool and wonderful things.

I'm actually not against Microsoft acquiring Bethesda. Thank god we weren't acquired by Blizzard

Wow! The thought of that kind of made my head spin. Can you imagine what a glaring conflict of interest that would be?

I doubt that Microsoft will interfere with ESO - ESO is doing fine and there are plenty of other studios inside the zenimax "universe" to care for. Haven't seen anything from the Arcane studio for a while for example - they made the Dishonored games. Fallout 76 is a mess and would need help as well. Maybe they will restructure some of the projects and let them to those, who can manage it better - free up some creative power for new projects - something like this I'm expecting.

I have a super bad feeling about all this. M$ is known as the great canceller and meddler of games. Ea is the gaming horseman of death killing of studio after studio. M$ is the gaming horseman of famine making new games and cancelling them all the time. Starving and meddling with their studios and keeping them in limbo. They are possibly still one of the worst game publishers and developers of all time and only had brief success with the 360. I really wouldn't be surprised if ESO was gone in a decade.

Oh boy! perhaps with extra funding they may have from this deal and Microsoft backing them, they'll make this year's expansion have some truly groundbreaking new mechanics and perhaps a new fun class and new weapon types and not something that may barely work, not function for a large majority of content, yet be easily monetizable in the long run and-

    The Elder Scrolls Online: Blackwood
Destruction comes to Tamriel with the new Gates of Oblivion year-long adventure and Blackwood Chapter, arriving on PC/Mac and Stadia on June 1, and on Xbox One and PlayStation®4 consoles June 8.

What cloud tech are they using right now? AWS?

If they were smart they would have built their containers to be multi cloud but switching from AWS to Azure won't make a difference.

Whether they have implemented cloud services or not it will be too much effort for them as well I reckon, crazy amount of effort of they haven't. And cost to benefits would probably means they won't bother as well. Might as well introduce ESO2 and call it a day.

The deal wasn't finalized until this year so no meddling of any kind yet. Now its done here we go, but on top of that ESO has had a good performance increase in PVE areas for many people. Zenimax is also getting new servers, but said it might not help performance as much as we think. So tomorrow next year we will see if anything major happens with this game. I want a new weapon or class something major as an RP person. If we have two years with no major content and increased jacked up prices with M$ meddling hoooo boooooy we got a dying MMO. Right now the casuals are mostly content, but too many bad years and lack of new weapons/systems/something could see ESO start to dip and die. I'm giving blackwood a chance I know Rona hit them hard but if next year doesn't see something big and cool for all the patience I might quit.

Still current, as far as I know...

Akamai CDN to distribute launcher and patch content to PCs. This might move to a Microsoft technology.

Everything else is on-premise bare metal servers in Dallas and Frankfurt, which may or may not already leverage container technology to manage all of the discrete servers. They could potentially relocate these to a Microsoft datacenter, but it would be "same hardware, different location".

I still think Microsoft is interested in projects being developed and/or future projects. I doubt they are going to get hands on with ESO.

While they are certainly going to milk all of Bethesda's ip's for every cent they can with future projects, to think that the acquisition of one of the biggest MMO's of all time as part of the deal is something they don't also plan to milk is, imo, extremely myopic.

Of course they’ll milk it financially it was big money to acquire. That doesn’t mean they’ll turn it into slot machine and even if they start with server performance only it’ll make a really good game an exceptional game.

Anyone playing other games can probably testify how bad gaming and companies have gotten over the past few years. LoTRO has been bought 3 times in the past 4 years and each time became tragically worse to the point of devs straight up lying on the forums and they aren’t even trying to hide the pay tactics to avoid a massive in-game grind.

Glad to be here and cautiously optimistic about the future.

IKR, Lotro has turned into a shadow of it's former self. I gave up on that game ages ago, and it's still depressing to think of what a good game it was compared to the slopfest it is now.

The base game is only like 10 to 20 something dollars. Making the base game F2P instead of just being cheap honestly wouldn't be a big lost and could improve the game's population which can have a heavy positive domino effect from there for the game's success and health. Now personally I don't care either way, but I gotta disagree with your statement here.
