What's the biggest challenge you faced as an ESO noob?

To be honest I never struggled in this game, overland was easy for me and I quickly got adapted. The biggest challenge was PvP and Dungeons, I'm heavily introverted, plus I have a bit of anxiety around people even on the internet, especially if I have to cooperate and others depend on me in some way. Community proved to be friendly to noobs though, unlike in WoW I never been called names for doing something wrong, besides doing my own research I got things explained to me. So yeah, there is no struggle here, just pure fun lol.

The biggest challenge was at beta test. All spawned in some kind of house, It seemed to be Dominion and Khenarthi's Roost. But nobody could interact with the door. And a huge crowd inside a small room is looking in vain for corners and cracks in the textures, where it is possible to leave the house. And looking at how errors and bugs are fixed in this game, I still sometimes have the feeling that I never got out of that house. :D

Gutstripper. Actually I died several times to the daedra on the path to get down there, and ended up sneaking by and hugging the rocks. Then I got completely flattened by Sheo’s little pet repeatedly, and so thoroughly that I didn’t try again for a few weeks.

    - Around the time Morrowind chapter came about HoF last boss was extremely hard, and after 3 hours of trying we still didn't beat it.

As a Noob? well, since nothing was 'level balanced' back then, getting slaughtered by NPCs I didn't realize I was not suppose to be engaging. This includes progressing in the mainline quest.

Biggest challenge when I first started playing this game?

    Shutting the game off.

Parsing was the biggest mountain to climb.

Breaking 20k on the 3million was such a huge milestone for me.

Took a lot of research, questions, trial and error to finally break it at cp 300ish.

Now at 810 it doesn't seem hard looking back.. But I sure remember being frustrated with the weaving, gear farming, improving gear when low on gold etc.

Spamming Ambush and only Ambush. Back when stun immunity was not a thing I crutched on that ability so hard, and I was terrified of the enemies I couldn't stun. Harvesters were the absolute worst and I remember sneaking by every one in the Hall of Heroes in Bangkorai.

LOL, I'm glad I'm not alone! That was my only skill for a long time, and I had no idea how low my DPS was as a result because in group content the other DPS would pick up the slack. I didn't know about addons, so I had absolutely no point of reference re. how little DPS I was doing.

I thought it was normal to not be able to take on more than one enemy at a time (mobs of 3 = death wish) at my low level.

Guildies intervened and I think I was able to hit 12k on the 3 mil dummy after a few days. I felt like a veritable god in overland content after hitting that- it felt like everything melted.

In terms of struggling, Fungal Grotto 2 was pretty traumatizing. That was still in the days of Ambush. Later on vBloodroot Forge seemed impossible- I think some guildies and I spent a total of eight hours in there and never did finish. This was before it got nerfed, but we still struggled disproportionately.

It's quite fun to read how all the beta/2014/pre 1T/early in game players had difficulties with the same things back then, and how many still consider this to be one of the harder difficulties they met in the game.

Also, looks like almost everyone played nightblade back then, guess Oblivion and Skyrim gameplay had some influence in that ^^

Doshia. And doing the original vampire quest line at a low level just because I wanted my first character to be a vampire as soon as possible since being able to play as a vampire was what drew me to ESO (it was meant to be a stopover on the way to Worlds of Darkness). Figuring out how to fight properly.

I came here, like many others, from the Single Player TES titles, namely Skyrim and Oblivion. Without any prior research, I did what I had done in those games and fired up a Breton Nightblade and set out for the Dark Brotherhood. Needless to say, after bashing my head repeatedly, and unsuccessfully, against the Grand Sermonizer through a process that can only be described as changing which weapon I was light attacking with, I realized this game was not like the Single Player titles.

Took a few more rolls of characters to figure stuff out (as well as getting the character look down), and eventually I had my Breton Templar main and actually knew what I was doing.

At first, When addons started coming out I was determined to play the game the way I thought it was “meant to be played”, without add-ons. But eventually I caved in and realized that addons add so many things that should already have been there in the first place 🙂

honestly? everything. ESO is very VERY different from other MMO's that I've played, heck other games that i've played. figuring out that your skill lines don't just level when you do, you have to slot skills and even then only those skills are the ones that level from that skill line. figuring out my stats. figuring out where and how to get gear. how to get gold to afford to by apples and hay for my horse. realizing that I really messed up with my skill and stat distribution, asking where i can respec, being told Elden Root (my first character was AD and back in those days you didn't have all the multitude of options of where to go, you had your alliance zones and that's that), trying to make it there at lvl 15 and getting repeatedly slaughtered by mobs in Haven. at which point I basically gave up and quit playing for about a year.

it was too frustrating, the chat was full of gold spam and even addons couldn't get rid of all of it, the game did its best to be as confusing as possible. i didn't come back until the game went buy to play. by that point there were a LOT more guides and I also decided to try playing other classes and realized that starting with a nighblade was a HORRIBLE idea (typically in every fantasy rpg I play I start with an archer if I have that option. in ESO, nighblade seemed like a good fit for that. /cries in bad memories)

That was my experience in a nutshell lol. When they finally nerfed the ability by adding stun immunity I was so traumatized by how hard the game was I took a break.

When I came back I still had no idea what I was doing and rolled a Sorcerer to see if it was better... and sure enough it was! I was still an idiot not level up all the skill lines, but fast forward 5 years and now I'm a Dragonknight fighting with the best of them in PVP and doing fine. I actually did revisit my Nightblade and to my shock she had a hybrid build, a mishmash of sets like the Dark Brotherhood one, and didn't even have the shadow skill line level past 8. No wonder my DPS so was horrible, I didn't have Veiled Strike morphed!!! :#

I was here for beta and launch, and honestly, ESO was really bad at the time. I did not enjoy it. I left after my first number of months.

I came back a bit later to give it a second try (I am a TES fanatic, sooooo I couldn't totally give it up) and I did start to find some things I liked about it, and started to discover some content that I was able to get some enjoyment with. At the time, I was also a fan of the crafting system, and all the different motif styles you could use to customize your armor with. Shame that crafting ended up becoming irrelevant.

Unfortunately, due to PC circumstances, I wasn't able to continue, and left the game a 2nd time. One Tamriel came out, and I felt a calling to try the game on console, and that's where I really started to get into it. The game played better for me on a controller than it did on keyboard and mouse, I started to dig deeper into more content that I was enjoying, and just generally I was enjoying the game. But burnout set in, around the time of Morrowind. I dabbled moderately here and there after Morrowind and up to Summerset, but nothing significant.

Finally, Elsweyr came out and released the Necromancer class, which is what I always wanted to play from the beginning anyways. I didn't come back right away, due to some personal conditions and such, but an upgraded PC and a move into a new apartment later, and I got myself back into ESO in December 2019, and I've been back ever since.

It's a much different game that it was at launch. There are still plenty of things I greatly dislike about this game - mostly due to my feelings of MMO's in general. But I do enjoy it, and I've been playing it nearly daily for the last year and a half.

    - Making an effective build, I just started out the same way I played Skyrim
    - Doshia
    - The quest in Firsthold, so many enemies
    - I once got killed by wolves in The Rift (Cadwell's Silver) when I was looking for a treasure map location. I died so fast that I didn't come back for months.
    - Failed at the Bloodspawn boss with my pew pew bowtard build.

This! When I started playing eso I've put nearly all attribute points in health and only a few in stamina and magical. Also I used two sets, one for my survivability and one for a little bit damage.

I couldn't kill anything fast. Every wolf was a challenge. I saw other players kill them with one or two spells. It took many months until I realized that things here are a bit different.

I recently started to play ESO. My main troubles were:
    - No "easy" way assign moving to left mouse button (it overwrites standard functions of the mouse). Had to assign it to a mouse side button. Am not so comfortable with that.
    - Players are counter to each others for chests, plants, trees and nodes farming, as well as for quests. I dislike that a lot.
    - I find everything slow (already at login!).
    - For me personally, from far the most difficult MMORPGs I had to begin with. I almost gave up! (blush...)

Now, it deserves to tell about the things that I find great too: Housing, stealing, scrying, landscapes, some quests and the fact that the story is nicely linked to explorable areas rather than a serie of instances.

All in all, at least for now, ESO remains for me a back up game in which I like to chill solo when I need to relax, but I don't give it more than that because some of the points above, combined with some other minor ones, are too much a bother to me. It spoils my fun too often. Maybe it will change in the future. Let's see :)

RP. Started out way too edgy. It took several months to figure out a well rounded character, someone that wasn't born from a were shark, raised by wolves and lost their whole family to an Argonian necromancer with an iron jaw.
