Companions in an MMO??? Can someone please explain how this makes sense?

Lots of MMOs have companions/followers for players.

This is hardly unique in the genre.

How many MMOs tacked companions on years after release?

WOW even has companions. Like from the class hall in legion or now in for example maldraxxus you can have a ton of companions. They are not that unusual. Lets see how they play out before we judge

I think they are a great idea and don't get why some are so bothered by it. Don't use them if you don't want them. Other players using them won't hurt you. But I think they'll be great for new players who are leveling without having any CP yet. I've helped a number of new players with quest bosses because they couldn't beat them on their own. Having a companion might help them with that.

Ffxiv trusts and squadrons are pretty limited to not be a real substitute for real players and I endorse that kind of mode, like I said in other topic, but ppl wants real substitutes, judging by the answers on my post there. They want a companion as powerful as a real player and that's just not right. (at least, not in dungeons) If they inflict damage just like a combat pet, I got no issues with them then. We'll need to wait and see, I guess.

I'm concerned that if the Companions are very powerful it will make grouping far less necessary or obsolete in many cases.
Now it is too early to tell.
Though I'm excited to hear about the Companions, they may prove to be fun and engaging to use.

If they act like pets and block things, they sure as hell will hurt my gaming experience.

one main reason is how horrible people treat eachother in group
the bullying the insulting baiting and hate speaches in group and kicking people out for childish stuff.
in addition to that if i need a healer i just summon my companion healer, or Tank, or DPS. instead of waiting for 3 days or weeks just to find the right helper.
instead i just within a few seconds get the companion and life is sooo much better. if i want or need friends or social then its allways there but companions help me where the public cannot.

I thought MMO's were for gaming with friends and making friends while gaming. Is that not how it's supposed to work?

Don't companions go against the whole point of an MMO? Can companions join guilds too? (ok, that last remark was just to be snarky, but come on, how do companions make any sense in an MMO?)

You never played SWTOR and Everquest 2 I see? It makes perfect sense in MMO and not something new.

Well.. contrarily to popular beliefs, there are many players that are just going around soloing stuff, and not everybody come into the game to grind dungeons, trials or or other group contents. MMO doesn't mean you have to play in a group or with others. Thus, those players who prefer to solo things would use the companion. Ehh, I have been using my companion (my non-combat pet) already for years in this game; just soloing world bosses, running dungeons, dailies, geysers and even while fishing. Ha ha

That is the goal. Companions are one of the most requested features in this game in part because there are some toxic people in group environments that many of us just don't want to deal with. We don't want to play by their rules, held their standards, or just generally deal with them being horrible people.

Companions were created, in part, to grant us that request. The impression i got is that companions are going to be better than summoned pets we have now because you level them, gear them out, and add abilities to them and set the order you want those abilities performed in. Apparently, as you level them and, i think, progress through their personal story, you unlocked more of their features/abilities.

As others mentioned. Combat companions exist in other MMO to provide players "fillers" to assist them in completing game content. The reasons vary but it could be a response to those players who often play solo or still developing their parse rotation - extra damage, heals for glass cannon, or damage for tanks characters. Since Sorcerer pets often are not effected by some CC mechanics then the new companions may have some built in CC immunities that will help players get through content easier where certain fights have those mechanics.

As others have said I don't want to deal with toxic real players so I solo. Don't get me wrong I have met some really nice people but then the bad ones stand out more. Example of what I want to hear and not hear. Player Karen, what's wrong with you you didn't heal me in time!? You suck! You don't know how to play! I'm never asking you to my group again! Companion Kevin it's okay my friend we can try again let's go get them! I would much rather hear the latter than the former. Companions are not a new concept. Personally I would like house servants, a chef, butler, maid, crafting partners, gathering partners. I think that would be fun.

    also Dungeon Dragons online.
and by the way, in eso, every single one of my companions will be using a bow.
i will finaly be able to relax and enjoy some pve dungeons without the harrassment and hate i get from using a bow.

Is that whats happening? If someone who wants to go into a dungeon for the story or perhaps to learn their role and they join a normal PUG, what are the odds that they will be afforded the opportunity to do that?

They essentially have story mode now and its a reasonable solution that adds an optional flavor to the game. The people that want to group will still group and the people that dont wont.

A few years ago we have "patch notes bingo." I think this may be an even better opportunity.
