I myself am really bummed out by this, for the simple reason that how I play my Stamplar, Magplar or Magden tomorrow, will simply not change from when the chapter drops. I'd always like things to change slightly every year - wanting new content simply. This will NOT be happening, at least not for PvP.
I wrote a 'ESO NEEDS a new class for 2021', and although many disagreed, most people wanted either a new Class, Weapon or Skill line.
I understand companions are a cool concept, but, for a predominantly PvP player, this wont make a difference..
I'd like to know what the ESO community thinks of this. Is this a no deal? is this a 'meh, not that big of a deal', or is this something you're not bothered by.

Once I know more about that, I'll know how interested I am in that system compared to a new class or race. I was quite impressed with antiquities overall but my expectations weren't too high on that one.

Your issue is you're a PvP player in a game where they have given up on PvP due to latency and coding issues... As is I am hopeful they spend the extra time in improving resources and with new server hardware that seems route theyre going.

This is nothing new. It’s already expected since the director’s letter in December notes that “ want to highlight that in 2021 we will devote more time overall to stability and game performance and less time to new game systems (with our standard content updates continuing unchanged”.
Not surprised since in their last letter to the community they said they were adding no new systems and would be working to improve the game as a whole this year.

This
With the entire team working from home, I imagine developing big changes for the combat and balance is tricky.
Imagine sitting in a laggy zoom call with a dozen people to discuss the complexities of set changes, champion point updates, class balance, blergh.
I'd at least liked to have seen a melee magicka line like 1Hand/Rune so it's a little disappointing but I hope companions are cool. Seems to be more for new players but the idea of customization seems to say otherwise. We'll see I suppose.

They would instead focus on fixing everything and improving stability:

Speaking of balancing NPCs though, one wonders if that will entail crushing nerfs to existing skills and sets in order to "balance" the power-creep introduced by the NPCs.
