My original title was:

No new: Class, Weapon, Skill line. What does this mean for the future ESO Chapter?
Although I stick with the fact that this chapter seems underwhelming, Wheeler and his combat team defiantly saved my sanity and disappointment toward the update.

I was 100% sure that this would be the most disappointing update, due to Rich essentially giving us a rundown of the 'chapter' to come with a half-ass 'Oh and.. COMPANIONS' (btw Rich, no bashing on you, it's just the way it was laid out). THEN WHEELER chad comes along, and essentially gave us:

- a NEW Champion system, taking away the cap while simultaneously giving us more customization to our characters which gives them a better depth, AND giving us performance by negating a lot of checks the last champion system gave us.

- THEN big boy Wheeler gave us different armour passives. MAN these are good.. not needed, just.. just good. A negative to wearing some armour. Nice addition to be sure.

- Then finally, he addressed healing in non-groups and straight out said no proc sets. I'm not AGAINST Proc sets, and I know that wont last forever, but their hardcore approach to the issues in PvP is refreshing, and listening to the community is really comforting, knowing if we shout enough, they'll listen.

WHAT I'm trying to get at is, RICH WHY DIDNT YOU ADD THE FACT THAT MOST OF THIS ^ WAS HAPPENING AT THE END. I went away from my PC thinking this year was literally done for, but the seeming dedication to performance and the change to CP has actually made me think.. not so bad, maybe this year will be the year the performance-purists might be mildly satisfied.

I'm waiting to hear more about the companion system. It could either be broken OP, completely useless or anything else in between. Once I know more about that, I'll know how interested I am in that system compared to a new class or race. I was quite impressed with antiquities overall but my expectations weren't too high on that one.

So, as we just got told (or NOT told), there will be no new Class, Weapon or Skill line.

I myself am really bummed out by this, for the simple reason that how I play my Stamplar, Magplar or Magden tomorrow, will simply not change from when the chapter drops. I'd always like things to change slightly every year - wanting new content simply. This will NOT be happening, at least not for PvP.

I wrote a 'ESO NEEDS a new class for 2021', and although many disagreed, most people wanted either a new Class, Weapon or Skill line.

I understand companions are a cool concept, but, for a predominantly PvP player, this wont make a difference..

I'd like to know what the ESO community thinks of this. Is this a no deal? is this a 'meh, not that big of a deal', or is this something you're not bothered by.

Yea im pretty dissapointed as well.

The way you play in PvP might slightly change depending on what they buff or nerf, but in total its probably going to look very similar to how it looks atm.

What they are bringing in that new "chapter" really was actually way less than i imagined them to be able to put in such a thing, at least for someone who is not into questing and solo PvE.

One of the characters in the trailer even used a One Hand and Rune spell!

But I suppose it's like all of the interesting vampire skills that we still somehow can't use despite them already being in the game.

Looks as though we're poised to have combat stagnation for three years in a row.

Your issue is you're a PvP player in a game where they have given up on PvP due to latency and coding issues... As is I am hopeful they spend the extra time in improving resources and with new server hardware that seems route theyre going.

I agree, but I wish we knew more now.. so I understand whether to invest anymore time or not.. With the introduction of Necromancer, everyone knew what we were getting. A new class. New content effecting every part of ESO. This companion system not touching PvP or solo dungeon seems really silly. A system like that, I understand must be hard to balance, but yet again this is just neglecting PvP.

This is nothing new. It’s already expected since the director’s letter in December notes that “ want to highlight that in 2021 we will devote more time overall to stability and game performance and less time to new game systems (with our standard content updates continuing unchanged”.

Obviously game is aimed at RPers and questing. Sad thing is ZOS is still charging this DLC as a chapter. Fool me once (Greymoor) ZOS.....this time I will maybe buy on sale 1 month after release!

None of that matters. It's wasted energy, though and through and only appeals to the absolute most causal audience and rpers that for whatever reason need an even easier time killing mobs in overland zones.

    What a huge disappointment man...

well with companions they pretty much added a new system, its just that that system is basically irrelevant to veteran players, as at least from how it sounded is mainly for questing and overland and wont add much else for other parts of the game.

they could at least have implemented some new skillline or something similar though, since that really would not be a new mechanic.

considering that companions have a high level of customization from gear, skills, combat style - as well as their own story content - and like other features will be supported for years to come. Seems like a major innovative feature.
How this will affect all of PvE content we will find out.

Also ESO is not a game to add arbitrary gameplay systems that will just get abandoned in two years.

Remember Spellcrafting? They showcased it as an idea and it was left and players still ask about it. After that period of major growth they have no interest in showing off features that they can't promise will come to the game.

After the balancing nightmare of the Necromancer are we really surprised that they did not add a new class?

    This

With the entire team working from home, I imagine developing big changes for the combat and balance is tricky.

Imagine sitting in a laggy zoom call with a dozen people to discuss the complexities of set changes, champion point updates, class balance, blergh.

Not even a rework of any skill line either it seems. I wasn't expecting much but it's still a colossal bummer. A weapon/class/skill line keeps things fresh.

I'd at least liked to have seen a melee magicka line like 1Hand/Rune so it's a little disappointing but I hope companions are cool. Seems to be more for new players but the idea of customization seems to say otherwise. We'll see I suppose.

WoW and FFXIV are able to offer you complete expansions with half a dozen zones, dungeons etc. during COVID and lockdowns and ZOS isn’t capable of revamping a skill line or adding a new weapon? lol

What even happened to the CP rework? Is this going to continue to be vaporware for yet another year? In the entire time that I've been playing ESO the cap has been 810.

Speaking of balancing NPCs though, one wonders if that will entail crushing nerfs to existing skills and sets in order to "balance" the power-creep introduced by the NPCs.

This is NOT a surprise if you paid attention at all. Remember Matt Firor's end of year letter, he said the in light of all the problems they had this last year, with game crashes, things breaking, fixes breaking more things, etc; there would be no new game systems. They would instead focus on fixing everything and improving stability:

So bringing in companions that will just double the amount of characters basically everywhere besides PvP sounds like a good idea for performance improvements then?

I just had a thought. No offence, but the companions IS a new system, and a more complex one than adding a class. It's probably hard to balance, it's going to be dfficult on the servers, and it's a whole new thing to learn. No one was asking for companions, they WERE asking for a new skill line, class or weapon. If they went to efforts to add companions, then why not a class, skill line or weapon.

It's a poor scape goat, but alas.

If they would have changed CP and that alone, at LEAST that would have changed the game and how people played.
