New Skill Lines Wishlist & Discussion

Here is my wishlist of skill lines I hope get added to the game. I want to encourage discussion on how they could be implemented and what the actives / passives could look like. These have probably been mentioned before, so feel free to link other threads discussing these. I've been paying since beta but was away from the game for a couple years, and have been back into it for a month now. I think these area all important lines to add to fill out missing character archetypes.

1) Mounted: We already have one skill that can be activated from a mount, Rapid Maneuver. I'd like to see mounts get their own single skillbar to slot certain skills to, so you don't need to manually put on Rapid Maneuver every time you mount up. Being able to use light/heavy attacks while mounted would be nice too. Imagine huge cavalry battles in Cyrodiil! The mounted skill line could include new abilities, or old class abilities could be revisited to be castable while mounted without the need for a new mounted skill line.

2) Unarmed: The ability to play as a monk or brawler would be nice. With no weapon equipped, your light/heavy attacks would default to this (although be weaker since you have no weapon equipped). The weapons would take the form of claws, brass knuckles, etc. Basic attacks would be punches, with active abilities being smashes, kicks, and counters.

3) One-handed and Focus: Similar to one-handed and shield, the focus would take the shield slot and be a new weapon type. Passive ability would convert melee slashes to scale off magicka instead of stamina. Light attacks would be weapon strikes, and heavy attacks would be focus ranged magic similar to destruction staff but with shorter range. Types of focus could be ice, fire, and lightning. Actives could consist of magic infused slashes and wards. I really want to see spellswords and melee magicka builds become a thing.

4) Polearm: Similar to two hander. 3 types would be spear, halberd, and scythe. For passives, spear would improve single target damage, halberd armor piercing and bonus damage to mounted enemies, and scythe AoE damage / splash damage on light/heavy attacks. Damage would be slightly lower than 2 hander, however range would be increased to keep a safer distance from the target. The polearm, along with one-handed and focus, could add a new playstyle of middle-ranged weapons falling between the melee and ranged weapons we already have.

Thoughts?

I hope and pray they will NOT add any new skills before fixing the existing problems and unbalances with current skill lines.

We saw what happened with Greymoor and Markarth. No more.

I have a feeling the College of Winterhold will be future DLC, along with the spellcrafting mechanic they teased years ago finally making an appearance. Would love to be able to pick from the traditional schools of magic, including Illusion, Alteration, Conjuration, and Mysticism.

There have been lots of problems with skills during Greymoor chapter, even before that. Lots of requests to change skills - nothing happened. Plenty of changes that made no sense and so on.

They should focus on balancing classes first before introducing new skill lines. Currently people only use few classes to do pvp and pve as they are so far ahead of others skill wise.

Would be great, for both role playing and support abilities. Would probably be a lot of channeled skills. Imaging standing there playing the lute while your party fights a veteran boss, with the music making them attack faster.

I see. Yeah I noticed some of my abilities had changed since returning, some being pretty strange while others adding new mechanics and options. Unfortunately the larger a game is, the harder it is to balance, and that will be something ongoing. But this is a whishlist, assuming everything goes well and they eventually get around to this.

I think this would be a popular class or skill line if we ever got it.

    Socially, I'd settle for a /harp emote.

Bard/minstrel class in many games mostly as healer/buff-debuff but capable of damage as well. Instruments would be nice change to resto staff and different instruments provide different buffs while playing background music of course. Fiddle would be great lol

I've been thinking of this a lot and the problem is that hybrid viability still has things holding it back. For one, I play mostly hybrid characters and I have to choose which stat will be my weaker stat based on the armor weight that I wear. Sustain is also an issue.

Oof, I couldn't think of anything worse honestly. It'd be like when a bunch of people get together and do the different music item emotes and it's not at all musical because nothing plays together, it's just a discordant cacophany.

1h/dual wield casting, and being able to mix with 1h melee.

How come we can't throw fireballs or lightning bolts without a staff in an elder scrolls game ?

This makes nonsense since the very begining of TESO. It's time to fix this.

OTOH, in LoTRO, players have coordinated concerts playing their instruments and actual pieces of music. It requires a dedicated music system which I realize is out of the scope of this game currently. And not that I want it so much, but it has been done well in other games.

Sling shot grabs me as a great weapon choice for Bosmeri. I’d love to see a sling shot barrage skill that fires poisoned pebbles in rapid succession and a heal that fires fruity pebbles

One hand and rune and mounted skill lines sound like a good idea not going to lie. However, I feel like mounted combat would be something like 50% less effective than on foot fighting for the sake of balance and all that. Would be cool though for the abilities to function all the same, but depending on weapon type you have it could shift from melee/ranged, costing magicka/stamina, and damage shift to the weapon type.

i would say fix class balances, (i know this is pvp side) but 2 have 2 classes very high on single target damage which shows in pvp pop that they take up to 60% of the pvp pop depending on campaign

One-handed + Rune has been one of the most requested skill lines for years, it's baffling that they added new classes or casual skills like scrying before even considering adding such a highly anticipated feature.

ZoS creates 11-14 new styles every year. Applying already existing motifs and principles to new weapon types is nothing compared to having to come up with a single new style with distinctive look, not to mention eleven styles.

The only actually problematic part I can see is that adding new weapons would mess with the style achivements, but arguably those shouldn't even exist to begin with. Your collection is already tracked in the lore book section and there's also the separate style collection tab.
I'd not mind if the style achivements were deleted to be frank since they are just pointless padding and aren't much of an achivement.

After thinking about this, it's not even a hard problem to solve, you could just turn apply the layer system to these achivements as well. Aka how most numerical achivements work, like 'Seasoned Duelist', where you have to do 1/25/100 duels for the respective tiers.

So you could establish a Style Adept tier - 5 pages, Style Master - 10 pages and Style Grandmaster - 15 or more/all pages known.
Convert all current style achivements to Style Master tier and boom, you don't have to go through the potential mess that would be deleting or invalidating achivements. Everyone who already earned them should still have them and this would allow at least one substantial expansion to the weapon system (more if you tie the 3rd tier to a fixed number of pages).

New weapons are such an easy selling point for chapters, a titular low hanging fruit. I'm quite certain it'd take less effort than a new class, so why leave it unutilized.

Is it wrong that that's also one of the reasons I'd like them? Just thinking about how they could design polearms in many of the different styles, like a lot of the Khajiiti styles would be glaives, or the more Akaviri styles would have naginatas, and then you have the standard spears/halberds/tridents/etc.

If they added a 15th page to grind for, that'd be painful (but I could see them doing that as a bonus to get us to go back and revisit a lot of older content). I'd prefer they just change the 'staff' page, which only unlocks staff styles, to a 'polearms' page to unlock the spear and staff style. Or even just move the dagger style to unlock with swords since so many daggers and swords are similar, and then repurpose the now-empty 'dagger' page for the spears. That way anyone who already has the pages unlocked would just get the new one.

Spears would be a nice addition to the woodworking as well, since that skill line only has 6 items (shield, bow, 4 staves) to clothing and blacksmithing skill's 14 (7 armor pieces in 3 weights and 7 metal weapons)

The crafting is the one thing I see as difficult for the rune style people talk about - you'd need to craft that somewhere that's at all of the set stations (so enchanting station is out unless they went and added them in everywhere), and the Jewelry stations use a different set of materials (cloth/metal/wood have 10 levels, but jewelry only has 5). While it wouldn't add any new styles to craft, it would require a whole new set of crafting stuff to be added.
