Don't only play one aspect of the game, I think ESO is really better if you at least dally in a bit of everything here and there. That way you're really getting to see everything.

    Also do craft writs lol.

Don’t rush with the levelling - there will be plenty of free daily rewards scrolls and double exp points during events.

Enjoy the quests, and take time to soak in the scenery.

Wait until you are really certain before committing to ESO+ subs.

Start your crafting, especially research early and keep an eye on the timers. Refresh as necessary. Trait research is a grind that could take months so keep at it. It's worth it to craft gear for your main, your alts and others when you can.

Train your horse daily. You get a free basic accountwide mount at level 10.

You will get less powerful as you level up. Level 40 - 50 will suck. cp10 - cp160 will suck more, but it gets way better at that point.

Play the way you want. There is very little that is considered necessary content. Play pvp if you like it. Avoid it if you don't.

Be prepared to not be at all prepared for veteran content when you first attempt it. It's usually a wake up call for new players. Veteran DLC dungeons are considered very difficult compared to other content. Keep that in mind.

If you want steady incoming gold and materials, look into crafting writs daily. It's a great source of income and can be done on multiple characters on your account.

ESO is very alt friendly compared to some other games. Your endgame level progression (champion points) are account wide so leveling alts is fairly easy. Most dailiy quests are awarded per character so it encourages alts. 99.99% of gear in the game is account bound so you can farm any gear you want on alts and pass it around through your bank to outfit them.

    Hi newcomer,

    1) You will probably start in a DLC zone, which is not helping for "natural" progression. Once gone through tutorial, you should go to Auridon/Stonefalls/Glenumbria (depending on your alliance) to start the main quest.

    2) Join Fighters guild, Mages guild, Undaunted guild in that first city. You can ignore "Prologue to DLC" quests until you get advanced enough. Also mind having a Mundus stone active (Lover or Lady in starter zones).

    3) Take a quick trip to Gold coast and Hew's bane to unlock balde of woe (instakill on stealth) and thieves treasures. You may wait for a free ESO+ trial for doing so. This may also apply to Psijic skill line from Summerset (you have to go through main quest there until you reach Artaeum).

    4) In the options menu, you have setups to display health bars above enemies, and that prevent friendly NPC attacks, and random objects thievery (this should avoid you many troubles). I also recommend ALWAYS displaying your own ressources bars, your skills bars, and the buffs. Don't be afraid to try different options setups.

    5) While leveling, I recommend focusing on a single character until you reach Champion points (level 50+), which will benefit all other characters (even if someone tells you that you picked the "wrong" race or class, the current toon may still be useful as a crafter if you switch afterwards). You can freely use the experience scrolls, the game will give you plenty enough with daily rewards. Try to always slot at least 1 skill from each of your class lines until you reach level 50 in this skill line to unlock passive perks quicker. If your setup does not allow that, swap skills before validating quests.

    6) Level up your horse daily at the stables. It can also increase your own inventory, even without using the horse. Try to increase your carfting skills by researching traits early, don't be afraid to "deconstruct" any gear that is below level 50 CP 160, you won't use it in the future anyway.

    7) If you have friends ingame or joined a player guild, you may ask for someone to craft you a "levelling" set of gear (ask for stamina or magicka depending on your setup, with xp trait), such gear can carry you for 30-40 levels (keep on the armor and jewelry, take whatever weapon on the ground during your adventures that matches your level for a decent damage scaling).

    8) If you struggle in open world, you may come to that later, with higher level, and/or with a coop buddy. Upon reaching level 10, go to Cyrodiil to unlock the PVP skill lines, which gives you "Vigor" skill that is a great self-heal for stamina characters.

    9) If you're lost, need or want more beginner information, here are some useful links:
    https://en.uesp.net/wiki/Online:Online
Very complete wiki about TES universe, includes an interactive world map and build editor.
    https://alcasthq.com/
    Beginner-friendly guides and builds.

    10) While this is not clearly said ingame, potions and active food/drink are considered permanent buffs by all veteran players. You may skip those while running solo in the wild, but mind to have levelled supplies if you get into group activities.

in addition to that @redspecter23 says I recommend joining an friendly and social guild.
Its a lots of help from anything from crafting gear and food to all the random dungeons call out who love an low level player in group. You might join more than one and drop ones you don't like, if they don't have an trader you can also join an low demand trading guild to.

As for vet dungeons, wait until cp 160 you can continue to do normals after 50.
Cyrodil with an friendly guild is also lots of fun and something you want to try out even if you are not into pvp in other games.
Grinding just make you go in circles.
Asking ZoS for nerfs is as stupid as asking for close air support from the death star.

Like others have stated, take your time. There is a ton of content to take in, no sense in rushing through it all. Do not expect to have combat mastered in your first few months of gameplay, it took me two years to figure out what I wanted to do with my first character.

Join a nice guild, level your mount everyday, and remember to do your crafting writs.

Take it slow, and try everything. Get a mundus stone right away(spell or weapon dmg does wonders while leveling). Do your random daily dungeon and BG. And get two 5-piece set bonusses when you can.

When I first started I did not realize the impact of sets.

The best place to start this game, in my opinion would be Aldmeri Dominion. As those area's flow in difficulty and quest variation. To start there, make an AD character. Do the tutorial, and then go to auridon, vulkhel guard, and talk to the benefactor. You will end up on khenarthi's roost, and everything else flows naturally from there on.

Absolutely do not rush with leveling and don't pay any attention to forum rumors like trading guilds conspiracy, "toxic" endgame, etc. As you should see for yourself and decide if that holds any water and if you should engage in such activities.

Also it's mmo, so if you willing to enjoy everything it has to offer try to find people you enjoy being around, you have plenty of choice so don't stick with someone who is in any way don't fit your tastes.

Approach the game from the perspective of enjoying the journey, and let the destination take care of itself. Play for 2 or 3 hours per day rather than every waking hour and follow your own instincts and preferences so far as playstyle and builds etc are concerned. Seek advice on the forum by all means, but ignore all the negativity and doomsday warnings from the disenchanted, some of whom have real problems with the game while you may not.

Take your time and enjoy questing and adventuring before getting involved with trials and get dungeons. Once the game becomes an addon, how much dps can you do, do you have the right sets, it looses some of its magic.

Don't pay for wayshrine travel if you need to save gold. Either travel to your nearest wayshrine to travel for free or join a guild and in the guild roster use 'travel to player' to travel to guildmates who happen to be in the location you want approximately. Some houses have good locations that are convenient to to travel to, like Snugpod in Grahtwood which is a cheap home but really useful location if in the Aldmeri Dominion. Lookout for houses where you think it will make getting about easier if housing is your thing.

Also, I recommend to get ESO+ for skyshard hunting. DLC = more skyshards.
And this endless crafting bag is really nice untill your crafting skills are lvl 50 and you are lvl50 cp 160 with upgraded bank space.

Get some popcorn, coffee, tea, hot chocolate, beer, whiskey (or whatever may be your flavor,) and ease back a bit on that good ole Lazy Boy or recliner of yours. Pop on a few of those all-things-to-know when starting out ESO type videos (created by the ever many unsung gurus of ESO on Youtube,) and you'll be fine.

Got to agree with most of the positive advice already posted here, so I won't repeat them.

Increasing your bank space to 240 is highly recommended. It costs a lot of gold, but is well worth it. Keep your raw materials and soul gems (They will come in useful later) and sell anything else not nailed down in order to do so.

Having an alt character to hold on to stuff helps.

Eso plus is by no means essential. They tend to have free trials every three or four months ish. Give the trial a go, them see what you think. Don't feel obliged to have it (I don't).

You only get a "1st experience" once. Don't waste it.
Eso is a beautiful game, enjoy it.

Take your time. Don't rush to the endgame - or you'll frustrate yourself and others.

And when you think you're ready for veteran content (160cp+ please for max gear)
Please read up on the guides out there so you learn the mehcs before you go in:)

Some of my observations and advice from years ago still apply.

    https://tamrielfoundry.com/articles/general-tips-for-new-or-returning-players/
    • It is possible to level up with a build that is well below optimal. Don't sweat (all) the details. Good advice about endgame builds does not need to be followed while you're leveling.
    • Food is a powerful stat boost, and is sold cheap in guild stores. Use it.
    • Light and medium armor only have advantages over heavy when you have the opportunity to put skill points into the associated passive skills.
    • Your weapon is approximately as important as all your armor put together. Also, it doesn't take damage. If you invest in any gear, invest in your weapon first, jewelry second, and armor last.
    • It is not really necessary to pay for armor repairs until you're in endgame. Just throw the stuff out when it breaks and replace it with something else that you looted. Alternatively, have a set of "nice" armor that you wear for difficult fights, or when you're going out on a date. :) Switch to mob-dropped stuff for most of your fights, which will be easy.
    • If the enemy group has a healer, kill or otherwise shut down the healer first.
    • Don't stand in the red circles.
    • Don't stand in the red rectangles.
    • Don't stand in anything red.
    • Skill books are not the same as lore books. They have no relationship to each other.
    • You level up active skills, class skill LINES and weapon skill LINES according to what's on your skill bar at the moment you gain experience points. So it is often advisable to have a special skill bar just for quest turn-in.
    • You level up weapon and armor skill LINES according to what you have equipped at the moment you gain experience points.
    • Other skill LINE leveling does NOT happen the same way. Crafting, Fighter's Guild, Mage's Guild, Undaunted, Legerdemain et al. each have their own leveling mechanic. But individual active SKILLS from any line (among those that have active skills) level as described above.
    • Passive skills do not level per se. Your skill line level, however, affects which passive skills you can buy.
    • In addition to skill books and lore books, there are various pieces of paper lying around. These contribute to your understanding of events and backstory. They may also get you new places on your map and so on.
    • I particularly liked the papers that got added to the Prophet's "office" as the main quest progressed.
    • You can "travel to" another player (actually the wayshrine nearest them) provided they're grouped with you OR in the same guild as you (and online). This is a great way to get access to new areas of the map. However, there are limitations. Basically, if the description by their name says they're in one of the explorable regions, you can probably go. You even get a few experience points for discovery for doing this. (More if you step off the wayshrine you arrive at to also discover the area it's in.)
    • There are a lot of skyshards in the game you can get to without combat. If you want extra skill points early, that's a way to get them.
    • Until the introduction of the Champion Point system, this game didn't have "traits" the way some other MMOs do. Champion Points (when invested) are sort of like those traits. Armor and weapon "traits" are something completely different. But really, Champion Points are spent on something a lot like passive skills.
    • There are some very useful add-ons to this game. www.ESOUI.com is the generic place to learn about them. The main tool for managing add-ons is Minion.

Note: Any reference to "add-ons" is PC-specific. Other tips should apply more or less equally to all versions of the game.
