Sorcerer Ball of Lightning urgently needs to get deleted.

Imagine having a Dragonknight.
A very immobile class, with no good ranged options. So you give them an ability that greatly mitigates projectile damage, so that they can make up for ther limitations.
50% mitigation against projectiles is very strong, but makes sense for the class. It does not absorb all ranged attacks across the board and neither secondary affects they can apply. Sounds fair enough.

Now imagine a class with a full ranged tool. A squishy class with no damage mitigations in its entire kit. So you give them an on demand teleport to grant it a fighting chance against melee attackers it would otherwise be helpless against. This is as well is very strong, but makes sense, considering this class has no other ways to reduce incoming damage.

But now imagine giving this full ranged, mobile class an ability that not only mitigates ranged damage (its only real counter) but complete NEGATES it, NEGATES. Not just projectiles, not just damage. But nearly every ranged ability and all the stuns and secondary effects they would carry... for 3 full seconds. Oh, and of course, it also purges all slows and roots for good measure.
Who in their right mind would allow an ability like this to exist in an MMO on a class like Sorcerer? Giving a class with good burst, range and mobility 3 seconds of near godlike immortality against all opponents.

It has gotten to an absurd point. Especially on stamina builds, who can combine roll dodge and ball of lightning to their hearts content to essentially cycle 2 sources of near damage negation, are impossible to take out unless they make a big mistake. Magicka Sorcerer with shield stacking is barely less guilty too.
No class should have this amount of godliness to it.
Ball of lightning can never be balanced in its current state. It is oppressive. The single most overtuned ability in the game.

15 meters travel, root and slow purge, negation of all meaningful range damage. At a lousy cost that is usually lower than most other survival skills available on its first cast. Please someone tell me they too can see, that something is not right here. Forget about damage shields, forget about your wings and line of sighting. Because you can have this.

Reducing its duration would do nothing to alleviate the problems, especially on stamina builds. They can do what they do now even if it only lasted 1 second.
Ball of lightning needs to lose its ranged damage absorption entirely. Allow it to grant major protection or simply % mitigation for 3 seconds. Give it increased range or reduced cost. But as it is right now, it is inconceivable.

That is true. Sorcerer combos just do not work in lag.

I am a sorcerer too and I too die to everything. Because I do not have ball of lightning. All that can kill a magsorc with ball of lightning, is gap close spam with unleashed terror and merciless charge. :) So quite a narrow window of possible threats.

This ability morph certainly consumes so much of the defensive power budget the class has, it should just get scraped and changed. Conjured ward is a shadow of what it used to be, the Matriarch gets nerfed ever now and then too.
If Sorcerers would finally be forced to stop hiding behind 100% damage negation with ball of lightning, maybe the class would stop dying to everything if it does not hide behind said ball.

I play stamsorc, stam and mag DK. I think they are all great and have great kits... Not remotely overpowered at all. Fossilise is the most powerful stun in the game, Streak is great but limited in its use by the escalating cost.

This is a learn to play thread. I do not say this to offend the OP, but because every class has a powerful skill that you need to be aware of. People are always creating threads saying cloak is too strong, Streak is too good, jabs is too easy... When defeated one v one it is essentially always a case of learning some sort of lesson. What you should have done, what you should change about your build, accepting that one player had a build that countered yours.

Coming to the forums in an attempt to get the thing that killed you changed should not be an option. It leads homogenisation and you remain just as incapable as before you made the thread.

Duel some sorc friends, get better, change your build etc... do not complain about it, it won't help you in the long run.

Sounds like an issue of a lack of mobility and gap closers from other classes.

Also: this skill is quite unique to sorcs.

Removing it would be extremely foolish as class uniqueness is already very hard to find.

This is the equivalent of asking to remove invis from nightblade.

But if only a certain magicka subclass known as vampire offered a bat swarm gap closer as a base line ability.... Then this wouldn't be an issue.

Because then both stam and magicka classes would have a reliable gap closer to keep up with sorcs. But it'd be unique still.

The good old nerf sorc thread. Sorc isnt even good right now. In PvP they're for sure not bad, but not good either and can be outright run down by most classes. Contrary to popular belief, they cant just spam streak for infinity. It's weird that you even mention the skill on Stamsorc because they can cast it like twice lol. In PvE they're good for solo content but are really bad tanks, healers, and sub par DDs in organized trial scenarios.

Try running 2H and just run them down with Forward Momentum and Crit Rush

Both morphs are overtuned in their own way (and that goes for both magicka and stamina). Ball of lightning is defensively overtuned while streak is easily in top 3 of the most oppressive CC`s in the game.

For anyone interested, OP plays an imperial physique magsorc streak spamming around in IC with elemental weapon/overload spam (or desync abuse since that particular combo is well known to cause desyncs to your HP) and mostly just wants the little counterplay that exist to his/her playstyle reduced.

But then see actual stamina sorcerers in the wild, spamming ball of lightning like magsorcs, spamming the dark deal that cost magicka as well afterwards and repeat.

Unless you play stamsorc you have no idea what you are talking about. Your magicka pool would not allow you to cast more than 2-3 times. Where as dark deal is cheap and doesn't have escalating cost. Pretty normal to have high magicka regen on a stam sorc, but not enough to spam a skill that increases by 33% in cost every time you use it.

Wouldn't you prefer to just get better rather than expecting the game to change?

As someone that plays stamsorc a lot(probably the most this patch) I can tell you if you can Streak 4 times in a row you would need at least 15k magicka in no cp. Which means most likely bewitched sugar skulls. Which means they probably have to subsidise their loss in recovery maybe eternal vigor. Which means essentially less damage.

I can't remember being killed by a stamsorc on either of my DK's... I honestly feel this is a man in the mirror moment😁 if you are on PC EU feel free to add me, we can Duel and figure it out, if you think that would help?

      Counterplay, hm?
What counterplay has magicka warden and magicka necromancer against a ball of lightning sorcerer?

Your fetcherflies, cliffracers and any other pressure you could have gets absorbed. You have no gap closer to deal with the movement component of ball of lightning. Streak is easy to deal with, since you can still apply all your stuff and shoot after them. But BoL? Nothing you can. Good luck killing them with shalks only.

Necromancer? Forget about your soul traps and entropy, force shock or whatever. Blastbone alone won't do the trick either. Again, easy against Streak, but Ball of lightning removes you from the game.

Come on people, how can you be so ignorant? I know you all play stamina brawlers. But why do there have to be such ultra hard counters against all ranged magicka classes while there is absolutely none against melee ones? We keep getting more and more counters that make magicka even less relevant in pvp, while only making melee better.

Every time you use it in rapid succession the cost increases by 33%. Please explain mathematically how it is possible to get enough sustain to cast it twenty times in a row and live in this cloud of "100% damage negation permanently". Please keep in mind that "I saw someone cast it twenty times once, trust me" is not proof.

Please explain mathematically how it is possible to get enough sustain to cast it twenty times in a row and live in this cloud of "100% damage negation permanently". Please keep in mind that "I saw someone cast it twenty times once, trust me" is not proof.

Actually, I said they can use it 4 times, not 20.
So sorry about the misunderstanding, you must have misread and thus assumed illfully.

Come on people, how can you be so ignorant? I know you all play stamina brawlers. But why do there have to be such ultra hard counters against all ranged magicka classes while there is absolutely none against melee ones? We keep getting more and more counters that make magicka even less relevant in pvp, while only making melee better.

      1. If you think BoL is bad, try Wall of Frost.
      2. I was not aware that BoL absorbs Cliff Racers. Normally a good StamWarden will win a ranged duel against a Sorc (OK, the Sorcs streaks away...)
      3. There is a counter to melee: All those skills and sets that heal you the more enemies are around you. Cyrodiil is full of them. Of course, they only work if you have enough health.

      You would think that.
But then see actual stamina sorcerers in the wild, spamming ball of lightning like magsorcs, spamming the dark deal that cost magicka as well afterwards and repeat.

I have no idea how they do it. But every single one of them has more magicka sustain than a magsorc.

Unless you play stamsorc you have no idea what you are talking about. Your magicka pool would not allow you to cast more than 2-3 times. Where as dark deal is cheap and doesn't have escalating cost. Pretty normal to have high magicka regen on a stam sorc, but not enough to spam a skill that doubles in cost every time you use it.

Wouldn't you prefer to just get better rather than expecting the game to change?

      Again, you would think that.
Reality however is a different one. Trust me, I wish I knew how they do it. But streaking 4 times followed by 3 dark deals is a common thing of all stamsorcs I see in no CP.

It is frustrating and should not be possible. But they do it and you can clearly see it is the magicka costing dark deal by this... purple cradle (?) It creates around you.

If you use ball of lightning, I must sincerely decline. What am I supposed to do against a stamina sorcerer that can negate all my combos? You must be out of your mind, love. :D

      Obstinance, thy name is Dracane.

He's offering to help you figure it out. And you're calling him crazy.

        You are right, of course.
Though there are certain things so strong, that it has little to do with failing or adapting. Some sets and abilities are just so overtuned, that they put you at such a disadvantage, that skill can barely diminish it anymore.

The thing is a different one entirely: There are, again, abilities and sets so strong, they allow even the worst of players to perform grandly. A sign, that ability in question is just too good. Ball of lightning is probably the biggest contender for this of all.

How many HORRIBLY trashy stamsorcs do I see, that would get removed if they could not hide behind 100% damage negation permanently. I see them having their orb absorb all ranged attacks while they go ham on their victim. Then look at Sorcerers without it and you see, how useless the class actually is.

It needs to go and other aspects need to get lifted as compensation.

Remember when DK's wings just straight-up reflected and people complained because we can't have things like counterplay in PVP, nonono.

If only there were an optional magicka subclass that could have had a gap closer to help out magicka classes that don't have a gap closer.

Don't blame sorc, blame the devs for not giving vampires a gap closer to help give more counter play options to players.

They had every chance to. Even gave the NPCs one.

I find Streak a nuisance at most as it's not the "I win button" you think it is. Non-projectile ranged attacks are not effected by the absorbtion orb Ball of Loghtning leaves behind, if the sorc moves too far away from the orb they can get hit again, and it's only a skill used to run away as it loses the stun!

Gap closers and speed boosts are another way to give the Sorc a hard time because without dark deal and magicka potions someone using something like Race Against Time will inevitably catch back up with them. I've killed many Sorcs with the help of Race Against Time and gap closers because it counters their traversal ability.
