Why don’t you play certain roles?

I play all 3 roles, but was very reluctant to try healing bc I thought it was boring. I finally made a healer bc I was tired of not being able to find one when needed. I'm glad I did bc it's not boring after all.

I now have 2 healers (Templar and Warden), and
I'm thinking about making another one with a different class bc I enjoy it so much.

I would like to play all three, but I'm hesistant to tank in ESO. In WoW you have a threat meter that shows your hold on enemies, in ESO there doesn't seem to be a visual on aggro. I'm also confused on the lack of aoe taunts?

Main tank because I don't like competing in the DPS meta-contest for biggest numbers.

And I secretly enjoy the schadenfreude of surviving long after everyone else who rushed in without waiting for me. B)

Got tired of the pissing contest that is DPS meters, so I tend not to do that much anymore. Having a lot more fun after I switched to tanking.

As for healing, I tried it for a little while, but never could get into being a dedicated healer. Just didn't find it fun at all.

What keeps you from wanting to play or enjoying certain roles. To be clear the roles in referring to are tank, healer, and dps.

I usually like tanking and healing in MMORPGs but not so much in ESO. Having to collect multiple sets (think it’s like 3-5 just for healer) is a turn off for me. I just want to play the game and work on my mechanical skills. I don’t want to have to worry about grinding that many sets, allocating space for all those sets, having to download more add ons (I really hate how much mmos rely on add ons ) and having to remember which sets I should use for each group or certain trial.

    So I DPS and PvP

The only 1 role i do not like to play is heal. Do not like to just heal something useless that always die from everything.

As tank i do not like bad DDs, and low skilled dps players, who need something from me for dummy numbers, like sets and etc, but i do not care and show them there place - of low level gamers and its ok too.

So i always gear for my self and do not care. Good players are happy with me, and about low skilled opinion i do not even care.

On DD i like all, exept waiting in random vDLC for start it.
I can solo a lot of them, but to less tank in queue, so need to wait for hours.

And it is low skilled meta dummy dps fault, that they promote such play others do not want and do not like, that it is hard to find tanks and etc.

Tanks want to be tanks, healers want to be healers, all they get - support to some useless DPS for dummy numbers.

Becouse of this low skilled play promotion people can not play there roles and have to play some support skippers role, that is a shame.

But those who understand it, can easely opose this abusing DPS low skilled gameplay promotion and play normally, close solo vDLC, and etc.

So this promotion goes for low level players who can not opose this view that abused to them.

We get less tanks and good healers, dds becouse of it.

Because there are a lot of noobs, who abuse low skilled dps skip gameplay to other people.

I play all 3 roles. Used to be a tank main, now I'm a DD main. Also have 2 healers (warden and Templar) and like healing but it's not as interesting as tanking or being a DD for me.

For pugging vet dungeons I only use my DDs, no other way to guarantee group dps won't be horrible. It's easy being a DD tbh.

I usually play as a healer but I sometimes switch over to DPS for dungeons or arenas. Not for trials tho because I'm not that confident as a DPS for those.

I don't play a tank atm, which is kinda ironic since I started as a tank in this game :p I did try tanking again during early 2020 when I respecced and race changed my Warden, and I had a very good experience with it overall. I learned a lot from it :)

    Personally I always play healer

Simple list of reasons for this choice is:
    - I feel like I'm more active as healer (constantly looking around at my companions health and such)
    - I don't like DPS roles (to me its not as engaging as healer as I can just spam abilities and clicking)
    - Tank is boring to me (attacking in general feels very slow and again its not that engaging to me)
    - Healer is also helpful for dealing with things like WBs solo (cause I can sustain myself for a long time/indefinitely)

Only downside is that when I'm doing general question and such in PVE I can't do much damage on my own so it can take me a while to kill things. I do swap out my ability bar and front weapon for more damage skills to remedy this a bit

I play all roles, depending on how I feel or what guildies need help with. Its fair to say my preference for end game is healing. But I go through phases, for a couple of years I was dps, then for a couple more healz, then I tried tonking and learned that and made my way back to healz n dps mainly now. For pvp like most, I am dps focused for all char.

In pve I find healing can be really rewarding, keeping the team alive, protected, buffed and supporting with dps. Sadly, healing is less and less relevant in more and more content and therefore those times you get that highly rewarding and satisfying healing experience are much less often. I mean very often were running x3 dps and a tank for 4 person content, for instance. I would also say that healing is the most challenging and times consuming role to spec for, the sets needed run well into double figures when you are at end game and that is a right pain in the rear, especially if you have more than one healer as I do.

Tanking can be really enjoyable sometimes, there are few more satisfying experiences Ive had than carrying groups through difficult content, saving multiple wipes, rezing the whole team multiple times etc. I mean you hear the group in chat talking about how its a wipe as they all go down, while you set about rezing everyone of them and you pull things back and beat that final boss, that you had to fight on your own for large spells... and afterwards everyone is thanking you, its a real nice sense of satisfaction and you feel good cos you helped folk. Those really involved and challenging opportunities come along occasionally, but more often than not I feel tanking can be a bit boring in terms of game play, particularly when its a good team and everything goes well (similar to healing really). Thats the reason I dont tank as much as healz or dps, I like it, but practically speaking healz and dps provide enjoyment, crucially - more often.

I enjoy dps, that is where the most variety is to be found I feel, in terms of play styles and thematic, with a wider range of class, both stam and magica to build around, than healing or tanking. Sadly, my dps does not compete with the higher end of the spectrum, being as it is stuck around the 50k mark, back when I was concerned with this, which I no longer am so dont practice or parse very often now at all. Im also maining pvp now, (where burst is more important), before I was almost exclusively pve. High dps helps in pvp of course but things like ganking and bombing and large groups and chaotic battles, all help level the playing field for mortals like me.

Agreed, there's nothing stopping a templar from being a good tank. The class kit is shy a few skills (like a health scaled heal and proper CC) but most of what it misses is available from weapon and guild lines.

    Same for me.

Started as a healer. Was my main for almost 3 years. Loved progressing with a group of inexperienced players.

Then healers became more and more obsolete, so I lost interested. When I switched to PC I only created tanks and have now probably tanked a lot more than healer. It is good to be actually requested to run 4-man content instead of being "accomodated" in the group. Haven't healed ever since.

yeah, then my lack of group utility and overall tanky-ness means I can't get into group content where a tank is actually needed, meaning I'm basically playing a *** dps

I can do all three, but I prefer tanking content. That's the role that I'm most comfortable with and I find that the least physically painful to play since I'm primarily heavy attacking when I'm not using skills or blocking. Healing is okay, but I have less practice with that (and far fewer healer sets), so I rarely do it outside of random dungeons or pledges. DPS is the one role I tend to avoid unless there's no other option; it just hurts my hands too much. On the odd occasion when I do DPS something, I do at least bring my dual pet sorc since that has the less complicated rotation.

I played a healer toon, once upon a time, but I had a very bad experience and it turned me off with playing a healer thereafter. Was in a bad dungeon run where all the dds were continuously standing in stupid (red AOE) and never moving out and away from it, and just kept on attacking away while still inside the red. I was spamming healing skills like crazy and couldn't keep the numbnuts from dying. I would rez them, and they would repeat the same and kept staying in the enemies' and boss's AOE. Even after trying to shout out on text to stay out of the AOE, it was to no avail. After that, I pretty much hung up the hat on playing a healer.

I don't really know where to begin.
There's very little incentive for me to do trials, as I see no "good" reason for it.
In other games there's usually a need to get new gear, in order to progress further into raids/dungeons. Without the new/better gear the new mechanics / outgoing damage / increased hp pools become too much; new gear is needed.

    That's not ESO.
The biggest differentiator between a "good" player and a "bad" player isn't the gear, it's the invested time and how much the player has learned to control their own character. For example, you can see some streamers using completely sub-par builds, but because they have a lot of experience it doesn't really matter; their performance is still better than most others.

So this, in short, are my reasons for why I don't even care about trials; if I go for a trial I can still carry my own weight.
However dungeons, with their gear, can be extremely good for both pve and pvp.

Tanking can be very fun, but it's only fun if the groups overall experience is somewhat even. Having DPS doing extremely low amounts of damage is a complete drag when I have to taunt a group of mobs 5 times, before it's finally dead. So I only really tank for people I know that can carry their own weight.
Healing can be fun, if you got a premade group. Your buffs matters, they actually increase the DPS, your debuffs/buffs/synergies helps the tank and their sustain. In a subpar group these things makes little to no difference. The synergies aren't being used and the buffs/debuffs doesn't make a notable difference.
DPSing is almost always fun. I can change my food if I don't get enough sustain, I got good enough survivability so that I don't need heals unless I completely mess it up; I can take care of myself

    TL;DR
    I don't bother with trials.
For PUG dungeons I only DPS, because PUG's usually have no idea what they're doing.
For premade groups I can enjoy everything. But if I don't need the gear then I don't need the dungeon.

Toxic players and lack of balance.

I have a few of each role but the game doesn't really incentivize playing tank or healer. Instead, the game seems to cater to the unkillable uber builds with a million dps. The problem there is that people just copy and paste it but act like their the greatest players out there. Too many times i've been tanking or healing and a terrible player can't function outside of their rotation, so the moment they die due to their own lack of skill, they tear into you for not making the game easy mode for their build they didn't build.

It's why i don't Vet dungeon or pvp, either. I want to play for fun and it's not fun for spoiled players just yelling about how bad you are at your job because they just stand there in the aoe or having that one guy who can take out an entire pvp server thanks to an uber build. As cool as that idea IS, when they're being a jackass about it, or just bad sportsmanship, it really kills the fun factor.

In order of preference, I play Healer, Tank and DPS. Usually in pre-made groups I'll be healer or tank, because that's what's missing. In Trials, I'm whatever is needed to fill the group.

In PUGs, I usually heal or tank. I can do enough DPS on either that finishing a normal dungeon is not going to be an issue.
