Why 'DPS'? It's a 'DD', isn't it?

i call my damage classes = dps's

btw it would look funny in chat to see "tank with an set of dd's looking for an healer" dont think it go over to good

so lets keep dps

For myself it's always been.

DD aka (Damage Dealer) = The Role.

DPS aka (Damage Per Second) = What the Role Provides.

Depends on the game, I think... when I used to play L2, it was DD. On RO, they're called Killers. Here, DPS...

It's a DD with a minimum requirement to clear the content in a reasonable amount of time, thus DPS.

Oh wow this thread really takes me back. I remember all the DD vs DPS debates back in the early 2000s when the term DPS first started being used.

See older MMOs often had slower combat, abilities with long cooldowns, and damage was mostly done in spikes, often even through group coordinated combos that had to be timed right. Damage dealers truly were just DD back then. As games moved toward faster combat and more about a player's individual contribution, what became most important was each player's average damage per second and so the DPS was born.

Anyway I thought it was a stupid debate then and it doesn't seem to have aged well. Call it the punchy guy if you want I'm pretty sure I'll be able to figure out which role they're filling.

DD: Damage Dealer
DPS: Damage per second

regardless of semantics, which do you think is grammatically and factually correct ?

1) I'm a damage dealer / damage dealer here / damage dealer looking for group

2) I'm a damage per second / damage per second here / damage per second looking for group

no brainer there then.

but It doesn't matter at all which acronym is used because everyone knows what they mean contextually
