I didn't go as far as abysmal, only because the rest of 2020 sucked so much more. So I give ESO credit for giving me a place to hang out with friends. But they aren't doing well from my point of view.

They can't get the game balanced. They can't iron out bugs and seem to be at the point of treating players as if we are staff responsible for helping them fix their game that WE pay for. The inch closer and closer to P2W or get shadier with stuffing more crap in crates to make odds of getting anything even more difficult. They can't deal with bugs and lag in pvp.

Going B2P saved this game and from there it lives on due to nostalgia for Elder Scrolls, which is why the one smart thing they've done is dip into the things that players salivate for: Elsweyr, Dragons, Necromancers, Skyrim, Blackreach, Morrowind, and looks like Oblivion for next year. Smart. If the #1 thing pumping your game up is nostalgia, then dip into that fan service sure. But they should have used the time that bought them to actually make fixes behind the scenes and balance things better than they have.

I've enjoyed my time with ESO, but it's due to friends. Anytime I see the name of one of the leads for this game in the future with another game my heart will drop.

And we all know how next year will be. A cinematic that looks way cooler than any actual gameplay we'll get for: a double dungeon pack, an expansion you pay for, another dungeon pack, and a mini zone with the last 3rd of questline locked behind doing the quest of paid expansion you better had bought. Maybe no new classes coming, but whatever skills locked behind paywall of the expansion. Seasons of crown crates with more motifs disguised as "style pages" watering down the odds of getting anything like a mount from them. They will make a bunch of balance changes constantly that will never fix anything, but require you to rebuild characters or relearn the game. New sets will come out and be overpowered and not fixed for months. I guess one big change might be them finally getting to doing something with CP, but chances are it won't be for the better. I have no faith that the guys that can't balance anything else can change CP for the better. And if gear cap gets raised (or changed in some form that equals raising it, just disguised behind changing CP) then I'll see another batch of friends leave the game as I have every season.

But maybe 2021 will surprise me.

pretty much, ESO has to be one of the worst performance wise MMOs currently. Regarding the new Chapter we don't know enough yet sadly, but if I had to guess it will be more of the same.

    I liked the new systems.

Scrying, excavating, stickerbook are the ones I thinking of at the moment. They really did draw me back into all the game's zones.

    Great stuff.

None of that has anything to do with performance though...

If you think making game changing systems while each person is separated and working at home is not reflective of a STUDIO's PERFORMANCE than I would hate for you to ever run a company. Or did you misread the topic.

The game works pretty close to flawlessly for me. If it hadn't been for Greymoor (because weres and vamps are SO NOT my thing, never have been) I'd have voted Brilliant. I'm aware that those who do pvp and endgame group content have a lot of issues, but since I quest, I don't have any problems. I have no crashes, no long load screens, just nothing going wrong.

So I'm a happy gamer here.

Very similar experience for me; just two performance issues dragged it down from brilliant for me:

    1) The period right before the Undaunted event where the Random Dungeon PUG finder broke. However, It wasn't so much the fact the DF broke, it was the lack of communication on ZOS' part that soured things for me.
    2) Crashes due to Unstable Wall of Elements and the updated frost staff. Again, no explanation from ZOS on what was causing it, just some anecdotal comments from players on what they were seeing.

However, loved the new sticker book, the increased transmutation stones for Purple daily randoms, etc. I mostly PVE quest as well, so haven't really been let down much in performance this year.

TL;DR: Enjoying the game, but ZOS' lack of communication is souring it for me.

While the poll specifically refers to the Studio's performance, pretty well everyone's comments are largely influenced by their experience of the game's performance. I suspect that it's the game's performance that the comment you quoted is referring to, although @oXI_Viper_IXo can obviously confirm or correct that.

Mediocre expansion, devs ignoring player feedback on the pts. Silly decisions with made-up silly reasons behind them, the engine seems to be hanging by a thread, little or no communication with the devs (I'm sure we'll get a jolly good back-slapping yearly review post from one of the company heads which will just confirm that they don't play the game).

Performance has gone backwards in the 'year of performance', AAA company - no excuses.

Damn right I quit, and I see no reason to want to go back. Although I would be interested in seeing how deep the nostalgia bucket is after they finish mining Oblivion next year. Elder Scrolls 6 tie-in I would imagine.

So 2020 is almost over and lets all be honest it's been a god awful year for this game. The inability to fix reported bugs months in advance, failure to crack down on the crashes despite introducing a patch that claimed to address most of the problems, balance of the game probably the worst it has ever been. We have the developers for this game who would applaud that Greymoor and the 2020 dlcs were a huge success but I can almost say that every single update this year has been met with overwhelmingly negative reactions.

2020 has been a year of broken promises, failed experiments and no resolution from this company and I really can't fathom how this company still has it's defenders after it all. I personally can't really trust this group of developers to fix even the most minor of bugs let alone the ones that have plaguing this game over the last year or two. It's a real shame ESO has gone down this path because it really should be doing much better. Anyway I just want to know what other players in this community feel about Zenimax Online Studios this year.

The Set Collection was a big feature add. That is one of the all-time best additions to the base game. I have cleared out so much inventory and I just feel far more relaxed dealing with gear.

The small DLC this year was great. I really enjoyed the story.

I haven't played the dungeons. I think I still have one I didn't play from last year either, though I might have finished them during the witches event. The chapter was fine. Nothing special.

During the witches festival, there was the Lich bug that was pretty annoying. For the last few months, group dungeons don't feel responsive. As a tank, it is pretty clear when taunts aren't landing despite you clearly using the skill. I haven't been doing much group content of PvP this year, so if there have been performance issues, I was spared for the most part.

The events are feeling really repetitive.

I did finally work on VMA. I wanted it on my main tank, but was lazy to respec. Once the set collection dropped and cleared out inventory, it became more convenient for my take to have more sets on hand. I spent a week running through VMA and then respecced back to a tank for an event. I'll return at some point, but I should probably work on the new arena first.

I really enjoy some of the new systems they introduced: antiquities and the sticker book. This has for sure improved my overall happiness with the game.

    However....

Performance is terrible. I am still surprised how after coming back after a long period of time, almost all performance and crashes are way worse than before I had the break. Group finder is buggier than 2 1/2 years ago! Like how?

It's such a shame, since if they hadn't made the performance and crashes worse, the game would be in a great state. Now I find it hard to fully recommend unless you're used to Zenimax style bugs.

I quest, pve, pvp, housing, and rp, and I've crashed in all of these instances within the last two patches (especially Markarth). Admittedly it crashes less in questing and housing. But I can CTD decorating my house. Doing quests and fps drops tremendously...frames not rendering. Multiple dungeons bugged, some not working or spawning last boss. Trials were downright laughably bad for two weeks but are at least doable as of our most recent hotfix (though bugs are prevalent, as are CTDs and skills not firing correcting/weaving). As far as performance goes, judging by all aspects of the game, this is the worst it's ever been.

I voted underwhelming but honestly my mood shifts between that and okay.

    The Good
    - I like the Sticker Book; it is probably one of the best qualities of life changes in the game. Free bag and bank is always nice and I don’t have to feel bad about trashing gear I’m not planning on using right now.
    - The Antiquities system is nice, and I like it a lot. Decent money maker with cool housing items and the mythics are nice.
    - Some sets getting buffed, I know this one is decisive because of the proc meta in pvp right now but we all know ZoS’s balancing is nonexistent, it’s just nice not seeing a nerf bat every once in a while.
    - I like Markarth’s story similarity to how I liked Dragonhold’s. It is like their writers bring their A-Game in Q4 or something.

    The Bad
    - Vampire rework is meh at best. It is either a hinderance or somewhat useful depending on the character and build. Going higher staging on Vampire is useless on a non maxed out skill line on like a new character or something and is an active hinderance since that dumb skill cost increase penalty exist.
    - Leveling an alt was a pain since that low level being placed in vet (but not really vet) bug existed in Stonethorn and some of Markarth. RIP all the new players who were trying to experience dungeons.
    - Performance issues are spreading throughout the game even in overland. It’s just more noticeable in more group ordinated content because the harder it is, the less room for error. So when the times the game doesn’t register a block, fire a skill I pressed, or kill me when it thinks I’m still in one AoE I moved out of like 2 seconds ago, it REALLY doesn’t feel good.
    - Kind of the same point as above but Markarth’s crashing and bugs which a good bit as been ironed out thankfully. I have maybe froze/crashed in this patch like 15+ times in contrast I have maybe crashed like 3 or 4 times over the year and half playing this game.
    - Not a pvp fanatic so this won’t mean much coming from me, but I don’t like the group healing changes. Size is kind of whatever for me though it probably screwed over some guilds. I just don’t have any desire to play anything but my stamdk in Cyrodiil because it’s not like I can help my faction in the moment now anymore. It does not feel like a faction war now it’s just a glorified battleground.

    Mixed Opinions
    - The Arena changes are nice, they give normal an actual purpose to be ran through. I just wish though those who did ran it through vet got their weapons upgraded or at the very least a token system or something to trade for a perfected version.
    - The combat team’s direction is uncertain. I want to have faith in you guys I really do but this spreadsheet balancing ain’t working and this recent buff/debuff change what a skill and set audit really makes me worried.

3 weeks ago I was actually very impressed by the vast improvements in performance in cyrodiil thanks to the 12 man group cap, but there was the problem of constant crashes. Most recent patch they fixed the crashes, but server reverted back to being ***.

Everytime they fix something, they break even more things. Honestly not even surprised at this point anymore.

    Okay
    I voted Okay.

A lot of the balance changes I disagree with, and I find the rationale of moving all the calculations serverside to be a crippling chain around the game's ankles. If this was done for Stadia, it was done for the wrong reasons. I have a pretty powerful computer that performed well, and now I feel like I'm being shackled by server performance. Not in the form of lag, mind, but in the form of decisions made when balancing the "all calculations are serverside" thing with performance.

I don't play Cyrodiil, I PVP in duels and BGs, but BGs have been hamstrung by the proc set changes which themselves were done to reduce calculations and improve performance with the move to all serverside.

PVE has been fun, but less rewarding. I love learning new mechanics, but I don't have a good PVE guild and when I do find a PVE guild, they typically already expect me to know the mechanics (or I have to hunt within the guild for people to help me learn). Other than new boss mechs, though, PVE hasn't been that engaging. Vatesharan's Hollow, the new solo Arena, I appreciate very muchly for its length; I don't feel like I have to be in it for literal hours just to beat it. Once I've learned the mechanics, then precise play and good execution gets me through without necessarily needing to have the BIGGERER NUMBERERS.

If performance means how well the game is functioning, then I have to go with the lowest option on the scale. PVP and Trial performance is simply not working at an acceptable level. If it was pass/fail, well it's a fail.

Now if I were to also include content updates and that sort of thing, I would be more middle of the road. My only rea issue with ESO is performance. The game simply does not work as well as it should, and seems to be deteriorating each patch. I have never had an issue with content design, visuals, balance, etc, at least not an issue that lasted very long.
