theorycrafters- what goes into a good build?

I like the opinions here. I had start my own thread but I'd also like an opinion from my fellow gamers here.

Let's take Zodiarkslayer's first question as a starting point:
    1) Decide on the CORE theme. That is the MOST important. It determines everything. What Role?(Healer,Tank,DD,SOLO, Hybrid) What Attack type?(DoT, Direct, Heavy) What Damage Type?(Magic, Poison, Physical, etc.) What Ressources do you use? Specialist or Jack of all trades?

Assuming my CORE theme is that I majority will do solo PvE (overland, questing, etc.) BUT want to do normal (non-Veteran) dungeon/trial (possibly solo or be in a group), I would assume DPS is by default the role for solo. Since I have more than one toon, my attack and damage type will vary depending on the toon's class. My concern is that many guides like Alcast and Dottz will have builds of some varying degree between solo PvE and dungeon/trial PvE. Also, I am not going to be doing PvP just yet but I enjoy reading the comments here if I do decide to do it.

    1) Is there a build for both types of gameplay solo and dungeon/trial PvE?
    2) Can I use the dungeon/trial PvE as a build for solo and vice versa?
    3) Should I worry about the specific number of CP allocated?

I guess is it okay to mix and match?

Sorry about mixing my response with Zodiarkslayer's quote. Forgot to close the HTML code.

if you're only going to be doing normal, then you can literally do whatever you want.
overland & questing are so easy it absolutely does not matter what your build is.

    1. yes; the PvE build.
    2. yes
    3. no

basically maximize DPS, make sure you can sustain, and as far as survivability goes, one self-heal is more than enough for soloing any non-veteran or overland content.
the only things that will differ from standard PvE builds vs. solo, is for solo you will need better sustain and more pen than in a group where you'd get shards/orbs and pen from the tank. and yeah, self-heals/survivability- but that's really only a problem in vet, and even then, only in more difficult content like DLC dungs.

in any DPS build, you basically have to play with sliders between damage, sustain, and survivability.
    for healers/tanks there's also a group support slider, i suppose;
but that should be most of what you'll be looking to balance around your goals.

normal content lets you go all into damage, with some sustain, and minimal ot no survivability.

Thanks, @Muttsmutt . I think I now understand when guides list them a certain way, I have to keep in mind as to why the build author made those choices in the first place. Sometimes, I am too lazy to try to analyze why they made those choices.
