How to enter the reach without using the wayshrine?

I've tried both the gate in Western Skyrim and the one in Blackreach but both just give me a "you do not meet the requirements" message when I use them. I can enter through a wayshrine and exit said gates but can't go through them the other way. Am I stupid or did I miss something?

I'm in the middle of the main story and the gate in Blackreach still says that I "do not meet the requirements". Didn't try WS one, but suspect it's the same.0 -

✭✭✭✭✭are you talking about access to like Arkthzand? I had to use the great elevator things to get in. I was not able to access the area via underground blackreach until I had gained access above ground.

Inval1d✭✭✭✭Apparently you can only travel there by foot if you own the dlc (from the crown store, not eso+)
