How to enter the reach without using the wayshrine?

I've tried both the gate in Western Skyrim and the one in Blackreach but both just give me a "you do not meet the requirements" message when I use them. I can enter through a wayshrine and exit said gates but can't go through them the other way. Am I stupid or did I miss something?

Hey there! if you have not done so yet we recommend you accept the "The Despot of Markarth" questline from the Stories section in the Collections UI to gain access to the Markarth DLC Content. As you have stated you can use a Wayshrine to travel directly to the city of Markarth in the Reach.

are you talking about access to like Arkthzand? I had to use the great elevator things to get in. I was not able to access the area via underground blackreach until I had gained access above ground.

Apparently you can only travel there by foot if you own the dlc (from the crown store, not eso+)
