If a character wasn't working for me, I deleted them and started over. Just switching everything wouldn't have worked for me.

The problem with this is that a character working or not working is not solely based on a players desire, but also based on buff/nerf cycles or general game design, not to mention the players tastes may change due to an MMO being a long term game "investment".
For example. My main (the one who has all the crafting motifs and patterns) is a sorc. I love the sorc, but I hate the pets (I did not always feel this way) and what I hate most about the pet is the fact health passives and a heal are tied to having a pet out. This forces the pet to take up a slot on each bar. I am having a hard time building this character the way I want them to play.
But secondly, the pet just gets in the way. This is not something I knew, or considered when I first started playing. But as time goes on I learned how pets in this game do not work as well as lets say they do in world of warcraft.
This is the character I started crafting on, learned motifs on, patterns, etc. But he is moving away from being my "main" because I dont like how the class plays out. But I am forced to play him in order to craft/make gold.
It is EXTREMELY, I mean it would literally cost THOUSANDS of dollars to rebuild a character to the state of a current one if you wanted to switch mains.
We also have to consider the 6 month period it takes to get mounts fully leveled up.
This game is unlike any other MMO I have ever played. In those MMORPGS I would absolutely 100% say NO to a class change, but in ESO it makes a ton of sense.
The other alternative vs having a class change, and IMO the way the game should be designed is to make motifs, patterns etc all account bound meaning any character on that account can craft them IF their crafting is leveled up appropriately. This pacifies the need for players who wish to "class change" because all of the expensive, time consuming stuff is not tied to one character. The mount issue would need to be revisited because frankly having to log in daily for 6 months straight to get your mount all dialed in is a bit overkill.
But I mean overall, I understand why people want class changes in this game. Its because we have sooooooo much invested into our "mains" that there is no option but to play that character.
