Well, no, its an option for some set ups.
If you intend to tank end game, some raid leaders may ask for Alkosh, for some trials, but its not "required".
I like to use it on my Necro tank, cos I can take my own synergies and that's good fun when soloing with the character, or in 4 man content when people are not reliably taking my synergies.1 -
HappyDan✭✭✭why do you need alkosh, with infused bb with crusher and the new pierce amror + pen poison you are hitting pen cap easily without having to spend cps in pen, using alkosh will only cause over pen.
I don't see any tanks wearing it in the near future, maybe to trash fights where you can't melee taunt but for main bosses it's it's kinda wasted set1 -

✭✭I never get rid of Alkosh in my tank. It's my only permanent set. Helps a lot with DPS and pairing it with Lady Thorn helps you shred everything to pieces with it's high uptime. Bosses and trash mobs die way faster than without Alkosh.0 -

For 4man content Master Architect/War machine is more effective imho especially for high ult generation tank builds. If your healer is not running it, you should.
As shown in the tankclub data, alkosh is not that relevant anymore.0 -
ke.sardenb14_ESO✭✭✭I'm not fond of the set myself because it provides to tanking. But it is a huge buff to DPS, which is king in eso. Personally I use yolonokrin more often, since it is procs taunt. And a decent DPS could get away with using this set.0

✭For 4 man content, besides the Major Slayer sets, Powerful Assault and Olorime are both good alternatives to Alkosh, especially for 3 DD setups, and especially with Stam DDs where you can equip Tremorscale and maybe hit the pen cap without Alkosh. On that note, why doesn't Tremorscale give Spell Pen?
Edit: Although as others mention, new buffs to other sources of pen - Pierce Armor, Sharpened, Poisons - might mean your DDs can get to Pen Cap without Alkosh or Tremorscale.

✭✭✭Unless your team is 100% magicka DPS you are gonna want to run Alkosh for damage support in basically all 12 man content. Its not required but you are lowering group DPS quite significantly by not running it. In 4 man content there are better options if you can't get synergies for it. Though for example a necromancer running Lady Thorn could get easy 100% uptime with just one other synergy from the group, such as a orb from healer. Technically they can get 100% uptime by themselves but its a practical impossibility.0 -
