The achievement for the holiday requires an arena plunder skull so yeah, they are required if you want the achievement.
It is a requirement to run all that stuff if the player intends to purchase the house with gold, or get motifs, or any of the drops from the event.

Game is RNG based. The more chances you take at a gold drop, the higher your chances to obtain the items. Seems required to me.
The event does not require you to get all the gold plunder skulls in a day, in order to get some special result. i.e, there is nothing "required" about Arenas. "I'd like another shot at gold skull drops" is not a requirement.

But the eleventymillionth time through after farming the one specific item you want, they are a chore at best and punishment at worst. They simply take too long and the difficulty disparity between normal (please shoot me I'd rather AFK and lick paint off the wall than do another wave of this nonsense) and vet (please give me the one item I want because I'd rather pull a double working at McDonalds than do another run of this nonsense).
Dramatically decrease the difficulty in vet and allow us to do 'hard mode' by simply spawning all waves at once. Cause something needs to be done about the amount of time each arena takes, the amount of attention required to do each run, and the amount of runs we must do to complete the task we're after. But then to add one more scab to rip off, you make them part of a holiday event...

Agreed.
I did one of the arenas once. By the 4th boss I was already bored. I do not care for that format. I think a 2 person dungeon might be fun, but solo dungeon stuff is just boring to me.
