You cannot know that for sure. While I won't deny that being cautious, not trading with strangers, and all the stuff you listed, will reduce drastically your risk of being scammed, that risk can never be totally erased.

You sound like all the power is in your hands and if something goes wrong, the victim's to blame. There are many people in zone who are honest, though, just like there are many people who walk home late at night without stumbling upon trouble.

Not gonna victim blame, I'm sorry the OP got scammed, but I also feel they have a warped expectation of the actual situation.

Don't buy or sell gold in zone or general chat...just don't. This is like walking down the street and someone offers to sell you a Rolex for $500 and wants cash up, front, no one would do that, or should but there is a real variation of that scam that works.

There are two well known and reputable Crown sellers on Discord, one has fixed pricing and guarantees exchanges that take place on their discord, the other has more flexible pricing (both are lower than the 300:1 you quoted btw, that is a terrible exchange rate) and has a reputation system, I've used it frequently and never had an issue, they are very proactive about banning scammers and making sure folks know who they are buying from. Both of these are pretty damn close to being scam free and if by some bad luck you get taken, they will typically take care of you.

Alternately buy from folks you know, in guild or wherever...

True, but can you buy it as a gift from the online store if you know the account name of the person you want to gift it to?

that would be against TOS as it is seen as a real world money for gold transaction

I got scammed for more than 1 million gold. GMs did not take any action and I did not receive my gold back. Scammers know that and this situation encourages them more. I must say ZOS has the worst customer service ever. After a point they don't ever bother replying your ticket and just close them.

This hasn't been possible at all last time I looked. Where is this gifting option in the online store?

I wasn't saying the option is there, I was asking if it's there.

I don't think he was asking you, but rather the person who told the story of a stranger spontaneously offering the "Greymoor DLC" to another stranger ingame. But since Greymoor isn't a DLC and cannot be gifted via crowns or anything, the story looks pretty fake. Too bad, was a nice story.

But you can still gift it using the store of whatever platform you’re using. I’ve gifted a chapter to a friend, and my husband gifted me the latest chapter as a pre-order. Just because you can’t do it through the crown store doesn’t mean it’s not possible.

Agreed, but using the platforms (XBox, PSN, Steam, etc... ) still requires more information than just the ingame ID, so that means it's not possible to do that for a stranger you've just met in zone chat. Besides, a total stranger offering you something sounds very nice and all, but it still looks quite fishy. I mean, logically, either this person is on a generosity trip and offers stuff to everyone (which, while being very nice, is also pretty nuts AND expensive), or there's some hidden agenda.

Now that I think about it, I think I did need to know my friend’s email to buy her Vvadenfell through the XBox store. Sorry, but totally forgot about that part.

It's not broken, gifting works. it wasn't intended to trade fake currency for less-fake currency. Players turned it into their own grey market (not against tos, but not regulated in any way).

The moderators on the forums aren't game masters. They have no powers in the game.

No transaction between players is ever 100% safe. However there are ways to make crown sales safer. Good guilds have an escrow system; people who want to sell crowns contacts the guildmaster with how much, people who want to buy crowns contact the guildmaster with how much they want to pay and what items they want, and sends the guildmaster the gold. The guildmaster acts as the intermediary; the seller gifts the items to the buyer. The buyer tells the guildmaster the gifts arrived, and the guildmaster sends the gold to the seller. This only works if you have a good guildmaster the guild can trust.

Thanks for the link. But unfortunately that doesn't help at all if the other player isn't playing ESO on Steam. I haven't checked the requirements for gifting a physical copy, but logically a geographical address would be needed. I meant gifting an expansion to someone who you only know the ESO account name of. So the short answer is - normal gifting is completely impossible.

No, you just shift the problem to the other side. I'd say Crowns are more valuable than gold, and therefore as a crown BUYER I do not blame a seller asking for gold first.

Saying that, ZOS may actually take scammed crowns more seriously than scammed gold.

Then people will receive the items then not pay. Zos def can't do anything about that cause it's a gift. Send gold is on record. COD for crown gifting is the only way to fix it.

Its so easy to scam people . I did it to teach him a leasson to dont trust anyone and to dont buy crowns like that , to pay only after he recives the crown items. I gave him back the many after that lesson . But anyone can do that and it will make people to leave the game , after hard working for 1 mil gold :((( sad !

The point that is being missed is that it is not the players fault. It has 100% to do with the developers. If you make a game, you should have measures in place to prevent scamming. They could easily make it so the the gift has a request for gold on it.

It is like if you have an apartment in a building, and there are no locks on the doors. You call the police and you explain there are burglaries in the area and he says that they know, and then walks away. You talk to the building owner about potentially getting a lock on the door, but their response is that the locks cost money and it is your responsibility to be safe and be vigilant... after all it is a renter beware world out there.
