I have to wonder how much this game has been neglected while they pursue another project.

A new engine is the only hope for this decrepit game, IMHO.

Did you see the "brand new AAA IP"? That means it is not related to Elder Scrolls.

Funny thing is that it was from early 2018 that performance of ESO got below the functional line for most endgame activities.

Yep Starfield and a mobile game Commander Keen.
Will be interesting to see what Microsoft does with them.

@TequilaFire Neither of those is being developed by ZOS. Starfield is being developed by Bethesda Softworks while Commander Keen is under development by id Software.

From the leaks back during 2018, this game whatever ZOS is developing for the last three years, was slated to be a live service MMO of a completely different IP.

Since when game studios are allowed to work only on one game?

Milking a living old MMO and a new MMO (that can flop, btw) is more profitable than only new MMO.

I didn't say that. If you read the above comments, 2018 is when things got REALLY bad in the game - severe bugs not being fixed etc.

I've suspected the ESO team didn't have enough headcount for the work... and now this seems to indicate it was so.

If ZOS gave up on ESO why do they add QOL features? Why do they bother with Cyro performance tests and combat tweaks? They could just roll out some Smolder Scrolls-level quests and crown store shinies and fix only absolutely game-breaking bugs. No pettable dogs for you. No nice characters. No balancing attempts. No new activities or mechanics. Maintenance mode.

But I guess this is "sky is falling" thread, so... Gamer out.

The Commander Keen mobile game that was announced last year at E3 (to much enthusiastic displeasure) was developed by a branch of Zenimax Online Studios. In addition, ZOS is working on another MMO, but since nothing is announced we can only speculate what it might be and it may be up to five years before we even hear about it or what it is.

Now, what I hope happens in regard to Commander Keen is that whatever game was initially made is scrapped entirely, they bring in Tom Hall, and they finally make The Universe is Toast. Not a lot of people were keen on the mobile game since it had nothing really in common with the original games. A platformer would be much better and it would be best if it featured the original Billy Blaze.

The problem is they don't invest in ESO too much, just enough for the game to stay alive. Why they bother with Cyro tests? Because they want to try everything before spending money on server hardware. Most QoL changes aren't really that complicated to implement (requires small amount of money). For two years they do this "one year story adventure" so they can reuse same assets (southern elsweyr bring almost no new assets for example).
Minimal investments to keep game alive, not enough to grow properly.
Actually rumors are Zenimax began their business talks with Micorsoft in 2018 so it isn't really weird that they didn't throws money into their mmo. Also Zenimax had some financial problems as most of their recent games were bad or sold poorly (Doom is an exception but Dishonored 2, Prey, Rage 2, Fallout 76, Wolfenstein [not the new order], all of them had bad sales figures). You cannot print money by selling one game for 10 years, they tried it with Skyrim

you guys dont understand how it works. The best thing that could happen for eso is for zos to make another game. Any downtime that game has is, especially at the beginning when the hiring solution is not complete is potential extra resources for eso.

then any compatible systems and assets that are built for the new game might be potentially transferred to eso for testing the water and other purposes.

overall now that they have a much larger development team they need to make sure their money lifeline "ESO" stays afloat for as long as possible at least until the other new game is released.

assuming were all "still around" in a bunch of years when the new game is completed then maybe you have something to worry about.

my thinking is that if is not a fantasy themed mmo it will likely fail.

I have been waiting for an official announcement on this for a while now, this post reminded me of its existence lol...

You all thought wrobel quit did you?

No but for real, for whatever hate people on here like to toss ar ZOS, based on my experience with many other mmos (and their forum communities), technical prowess aside, I am actually quite fond of ZOSs mmo design philosophies compared to ESOs peers.

Frankly as far as I'm concerned, an mmo without the vice grip of TES lore by these devs with x amount of years of lessons learned with ESO means that I'm optimistic for whatever next mmo endeavor they are going to release.

However, at this point, its important to note that it's not even garunteed to be an mmo in the traditional sense. For all we know, it could be some hub / party based online rpg of some kind not entirely unlike the various online games you see today. Eso reached this point in large part because it had the support of the TES ip. A brand new game with a completely original IP built in the vein of a AAA mmorpg in 2018 a VERY hard sell to a publisher. Again assuming it is structured like a proper mmorpg and not like a looter/shooter, instanced based party co op online rpg, which are vastly cheaper to produce and much easier to monetize seasonally.

    Keep that in mind.

I get a giggle everytime someone says ESO is dead or dying. Must be the only mmo y'all have ever played. Name one mmo with as much Content and population that doesn't have bugs. Name one that gets more yearly content than ESO.

All these "attempts" at improvement do nothing for console performance. It's getting worse with each patch.

Them having the rights to make an mmo in a similar vein to ESO, set in the shadowrun universe?

Whatever we think of ZOS and how they did on this game, it was a success. ZOS also has to start planning for the future because if they are only doing Tamriel then they probably only have about 5 years left of territory excluding Daedric realms. For example:

2021- cyrodiil Skingrad area chapter, Blackwood area zone
2022- hammerfell area below crag and to Rihad/teneth chapter, gilane area zone
2023- the pale/Winterhold chapter, whiterun zone
2024- morrowind necrom area chapter, black light/solstheim zone
2025- black marsh archon area chapter, helcrom zone
2026- possible that Whiterun fits better as a chapter so it’s here which means 2023 Winterhold is the zone dlc. Story dlc here is alternate plane.

Areas left that could be dungeons or PvP zones- Corinthe area of Elsweyr, Gideon area of Black Marsh

They could also stretch this out by using daedric planes or alternate planes as the story dlc but considering their attention is going to be pulled to this new game I think ESO will come to an end shortly after this new game is released. The only way they could do both games at the same time is have less dlc’s but I think both games would suffer.

I might have gotten some of the city names wrong but I did this on my phone and maps writing was in weird font
