(bots) Banning accounts isn't enough

With all due respect, but rather than making grand announcements about having banned thousands of exploiters, why do you not invest some of that Zenimax capital into hiring a couple of professionals and improving your security systems.

If a simple key generator is all it takes for one to make more accounts and go on with their botting, again, with all due respect, but ---f--- all i care about those already banned.

It is 04:01 in the morning here (GMT +2)
I dare you to log a GM in Stros M'Kai and have him take a simple walk around the outskirts of the isle. Cause i am doing just that right now, and barring chests and fishing holes, all i see is a big empty void.

I agree. I was at Stros just now...as soon as I try to gather an herb, ore, etc. There's an "invisible" player already there with some jack*** name taking it. Has happened over and over. Don't even have time to write down these weird jumbled letter names.

PLEASE FIX THIS! I've paid for 3 months and at this point, I just can't play the way I like to (which is gathering/crafting).

    Thank you Marthanna :)

To illustrate, after two full hours of doing circles gathering, (am a dedicated crafter, work first, enjoy later ok? no loling please!), i had one Lady's Smock and three Mountain Flowers in my inventory. Total! After two hours of farming.

This is a great game, and that says something doubly important for a company that had up to now zero practical experience in this genre. There are however issues such as this one that really, really need to be addressed.

Is this a starter island? Roll AD maybe :p That island has lots of decent nodes

I haven't seen much going on in zones 2-4 so far, the odd node vanishes, but sometimes that is phasing.

(Kanarthi's Roost) Starter isle was certainly nice for dense node locations. Far better than Auridon (yuck)

is that the reason why whenever i try to mine some ores or pick flowers, the items just mysteriously disappear off the ground before i get a chance to pick'em?
  • Aenra

That may or not be it, my initial thinking was that it is merely due to phasing. Since i suppose this being a Megaserver we are somehow internally split up. Result being that due to some bug we occasionally get to 'see' another instance's nodes.

If/when bot related, you can tell since if you're paying attention, a character's name appear as targeted in front of you (jsdhsgsy), even though there is absolutely nobody else near the node that you can see.

And thread-related, i see numerous characters i have already reported still being around passing guild invites, said guilds merely there to advertise PL sites..
Any semi-official response? Acknowledgment maybe? ^^

I'm either lucky, or I leveled too fast to see them. I've been to MANY public dungeons, and I have yet to see any bots. I see players camping the boss, but I do that too when I need soulgems. The only place I've seen bots are in the city in Coldharbour. But they were just standing there in a pile. A Bunch of lvl 3-5 characters in Coldharbour, lol.

I think banning accounts is fine because eventually it will get too expensive for the gold farmers too keep farming gold. They just need to get much, much faster at it.

Apparently the gold farmers have been able to use a keygen, so bans are useless.

If you think real people are capable of nuking a boss in a dungeon the split second he spawns, in the middle of of a pack of "players" then you probably need glasses. I'm trying to get a hit on the boss in dell's claim, it's impossible. He's dead before you even notice him spawn. It's getting rediculous.

So, you're telling me that Zenimax isn't activating keys in a pre-generated database at point-of-sale? Wow. What a rookie mistake. Did they fail to consult anyone in the entire industry who's done this before? This is unreal.

Key generators for an MMO? Unheard of.

What's worse is people are probably going to spend money on a key that has already been claimed...

I agree, the bots are able to kill him before he has actually appeared, thus locking out all player from getting the kill.

The only way to possibly do it is to confuse the bots by pulling a mob by them and getting them stuck elsewhere in the dungeon where they will then just walk into the wall trying to get back to the boss location

That's because the bots are sniffing the packets and attacking the boss before the client has had a chance to load the model and textures into the viewport.

(Like I've been saying, these aren't all simple AutoIt scripts people. They are full blown, custom clients that just spit packets back and forth with the server. No amount of client-side detection is going to affect them because they don't have those client-side detectors).

    Okay.

This is actually the first time I've been seriously worried about the game's ability to survive.

If there are retail copies out there with already consumed keys because of the goldsellers, you're going to have potential customers buying boxes and not being able to play because the keys are already in use...

    This is really f---ing bad.

Hmm... The keygen thing worries me a lot. If these botters/gold spammers are infact able to randomly generate keys from physical copies, then we are in for a world of problems pretty soon. As for the bots killing the boss before he spawns, like I said, I have yet to see that. I see a bunch of people standing in a circle formation around the boss' spawn point, and attacking the second he spawns. I've yet to see a bunch of people in a pile with obviously fake names kill them before they spawn. Not saying it doesn't happen, I'm sure it does. I just haven't seen it yet.

IF TRUE this is really bad, just cause one guy thinks it or says it (not necessarily the same thing), does not mean its happening.

Remember the scene in "The Core" ...when they're practicing in the simulator & everything is going wrong & nothing is getting fixed...Tchéky Karyo's character "Serge" is just laughing his ass off?

    That's me ..now...

I'm simply stunned by the enormity of what's going on,

& the people "in-controls' inability to deal with the situations as they arrive.

Sorta feeling along for the ride.

A quick search says that, someone is offering something they claim is a keygen, but I'm guessing it's just a scam.

I'm not seeing any reports of people opening boxes and finding their key's invalid, which I'd expect to see if this was true.

EDIT: Except for the G2A keys... which... that was happening at launch, but it's possible their key database was compromised, I guess.

EDIT2: I forgot, the G2A thing was, they issued the head start keys and then claimed that WAS the product key and were giving some people grief about getting their real retail keys.

That's even crazier, as it seems most of the bot reports were from low level dungeons.

I've seen plenty of bots (8-15 per boss) even as far as Eastmarch (level 34 now).

I think that the bots will just continue to migrate to the dungeons as they level up from farming, and as the bulk of the player base also progresses.

I'm not sure I believe the keygen thing either, to be honest. That seems like it would just be too much of a bonehead move, but it would explain why, despite thousands of reports, no dent has been made in the bot population.

Of course, these gold selling companies usually invest quite a bit of money up front in new games, so it wouldn't surprise me if they bought a few thousand accounts, and only 20% of them have been banned or less.

I do not understand why there is no public outcry to restrict public dungeon looting to one-time-only per character. This would kill the bots outright, wouldn't it? They couldn't sit there and focus on the public dungeon boss.

I know we all want to get tons of loot, but we can survive without multiple drops...

Maybe if the unique/blue dropped every time off the boss.

There are three kinds. Normal players, like you, me, I'm guessing the majority of players, but I don't know. Farmers, real players, like you, me, and most of the players, who enjoy sitting on one boss killing them over and over for loot, and bots.

Every time this issue comes up, the farmers cry, "please, no, don't lock us out of our preferred play style." And, you know, up to a point that's legitimate. But, now the bots are seriously out of hand.
