The worst advice I was ever given on RPGs was to always make your first character a basic fighter and not play anything else until you'd finished the game on that because otherwise it would be too complicated, combat would be too slow and that would make it boring. Fortunately I was told then when starting Baldur's Gate, where you have to play your whole party anyway. I soon realised I was focusing almost entirely on the casters and largely ignoring my boring fighter because once I'd pointed her at an enemy there wasn't much to do. So I restarted as a cleric and had a lot more fun with the "too complicated" spells.

Those staves gives her the flexibility of reasonable dps with heals and even a taunt. The class has enough skills to render it survivable and sustainable. The bear provides some neat depth and options. As I said, a fun, flexible character. I play PvE and mostly solo.
