Hello all. My friend is looking for a new class to start the game again. She stopped playing one year ago. Currently looking for class that feels fresh and not clunky. She played magicka sorcerer and magicka templar.

Thanks in advance :)

I would suggest she go back to her sorc or templar, if she wants something new then Nightblade. Stam versus magicka would be her choice on playstyle.

Necro, to me, is the most clunky feeling class in the game. It does have a great toolkit, it doesn't have a great flow. Warden can be clunky until you get it's combos down, then it can be great for burst and cleave damage. Dragon Knights are great for grinding things down with dots, so not overly clunky but not what I would call a fresh and exciting playstyle either.

Mag DK is my favorite class - so I recommend it.

I mostly play solo/dungeons. I find Mag Dk very versatile and survivable, I like the fire theme, DK skills combine quite well with destruction staff and guild skills, there's a number of good fire support monster sets and gear, you can also equip a restoration staff and easily heal in dungeons (if you don't like long queues).

Sorc and temp are pretty easy but yeah, they can get a bit stale after a while. Youre pressing the same ltd number of buttons over and over.

Mag DK isnt a bad recommendation but I found it took a while for me to "get" him. Found I really needed to play round with different skills till I liked him - great fun blowing stuff up now tho.

Stam NB Ive found really different and fun, esp once I went 2h. Good recommendation, really fun playstyle, lots of jumping around whacking things over the head, lots of stealthy sneaking and sniping, you name it.

Finding warden a bit meh tbh. The whole plant thing doesn't do it for me and while the ice theme is quite nice, there's a bit realise youve just immobilised them.

My favorite is stamina NB. They have a fast paced and fluid feel to them where they don't rely on delayed bursts or dots, it's all active attacking and very engaging. They have a couple abilities that take some getting used to, but once you do they feel intuitive and natural.

I use dw/bow on mine. Not that there's anything wrong with 2h, but I feel of all the classes they're the one that's best suited for dual wield since they have a solid spamamble and execute built into their kit so don't need to rely on dizzy and executioner.

I really like Stam necro too. They do feel a little clunky in PvE where you're trying to maintain a constant rotation, but in PvP where it's more about timing burst combos they feel pretty smooth and have a great toolkit. Almost too good, far more useful abilities than there is room on my skill bar, but that's a good thing, all classes should have that problem.

I have a lot of fun playing Stam warden too. I haven't really done too serious a build for it, since my Stam warden is actually just my crafter, but I can tell it's a strong class because even just goofing around on her she holds her own in PvP, so I'm sure if I were to set her up proper she'd kill it. She also Stam heals vet dungeons, which just shows the range that the class is capable of.

Mag DK idk I have kind of a love/hate relationship with it. I have fun soloing on it and I really like the visuals, but I feel like I'm terrible at it. Too much reliance on dots and I have an itchy trigger finger, prolly why I like NB so much, but on DK I just overcast and burn resources and waste everyone's time. But if your friend is about that DoT life she might like it.

Important question, how are sorc & Templar clunky?

I think your friend should decide for herself. The most important thing is that she has fun playing it and what one person finds fun can be painfully dull to someone else, even if it's technically a decent build.

The worst advice I was ever given on RPGs was to always make your first character a basic fighter and not play anything else until you'd finished the game on that because otherwise it would be too complicated, combat would be too slow and that would make it boring. Fortunately I was told then when starting Baldur's Gate, where you have to play your whole party anyway. I soon realised I was focusing almost entirely on the casters and largely ignoring my boring fighter because once I'd pointed her at an enemy there wasn't much to do. So I restarted as a cleric and had a lot more fun with the "too complicated" spells.

I've since come to the conclusion that it's the same in any RPG or pretty much any game which lets you customise your character. Part of the reason games give us that choice is because what's fun is highly subjective, so options make it easier for everyone to find a play style they enjoy.

Ah, but what you do is start as a fighter (pref a kensai) and then dual to mage when you get into BG2. Best combo by far :) Makes me want to fire it up. Again.....

Magwarden.... but I'm biased because it's my favorite and main class :)

I have issues with getting interrupted when I play magplar and magnecro and for whatever reason don't have this with the warden. It's by far the smoothest and least clunky class for me and the rotation is easy.

Magwarden. Agree with @SidraWillowsky above. I find the class to be great fun in its flexibility. My Magward runs an ice staff on one bar and resto on the other. Those staves gives her the flexibility of reasonable dps with heals and even a taunt. The class has enough skills to render it survivable and sustainable. The bear provides some neat depth and options. As I said, a fun, flexible character. I play PvE and mostly solo.

Yeah I like the concept too and I ran quite a number of dungeons with my MagDen (usually healer with rest/ice staff). Only think i find a bit underwhelming is their dps; ice seems to suffer a significant dps reduction in return for the slowing condition - and there's also no good monster set for ice dd builds.
But especially with the new Winter's Respite (healing frost) set it's very, very thematic! +

Mag DK for sure...no other melee magicka class in the game...and unlike warden/necro you press a button and a skill fires immediately, none of this wait 2 seconds garbage. That is fine for lining up burst damage...but its certainly not as fun to play.

A close second is Stamina Nightblade....but you have to like the sneak thief gameplay that seems to be inherent to them.

This may be the wrong question.

Better is to pick a playstyle and THEN ask what class to play it from. Examples include:
    • Sneaking -- obviously a nightblade, most likely stamina.
    • Point-blank magicka blasting -- templar or DK.
    • Bow/bow -- I prefer warden.
    • Ranged magicka -- most classes have potential. Tell us something else about your likes/dislikes.

Magicka DK is fun and powerful.

I don't know why people are voting Nightblade. It's the clunkiest feeling class of the game.

Warden is actually rather fun. But tbh she'd do better to stick with the Sorcerer or Templar, they're the strongest classes in the game.

For PvE Group content it really doesn't matter what class you play...
At end-game all the builds are basically the same including the rotations, in my opinion it can become very repetitive and boring.

For solo content, small groups and PvP:
    1. StamSorc DPS
    2. Magplar DPS Healer
    3. SorcHybrid DPS
