Well, early this morning me and a group of guys tried it. Got everyone grouped up, abandoned the quest, we all went back to the quest giver, then re-picked it up allowing it to re-set. No one came over to the kajiit during this time.
We go back, and it did progress to the stage where the mobs who attack him spawned. We stacked on him, even let them hit him. I think it was about three waves. After they were all killed, he still kept pounding on the door regardless and we could not go in.
So unless you're incredibly lucky, or know of another way, looks like we're going to have to wait for a fix.
