Trowel clears 3 (one intuition point) or 6 (two intuition points) layers of dirt. If you clear more than there are layers and there is an antiquity in this place, you will break it. It is possible to have up to 9 layers.Maybe I just really suck at digging but every time I use the trowel it breaks the item and I seem to run out of time every single time. I use the brush and shovel mainly as I said the trowel just breaks things for me. I cant seem to manage digging them up and I am going to have to wait for it to expire because I've tried so many times and its just upsetting me. Is there a trick to the trowel I am missing?
Gold antiquities are not square/rectangular. There are corners at the sides. Use heavy shovel to dig the most of the antiquity and use trowel to dig single cells.I seem to always miss uncovering it by one square! I spent hours on one Saturday night and it still in the ground. Seems no matter what I do I have one stinking square left covering it when time runs out? Is there a quick way to uncover besided mouse clicking?

Remember, trowel doesn't use time. Heavy shovel uses 1 turn regardless of intuition points.

OMG, thank you sooooo much. 3 tries with your information and I got it done.
But why? There are 3 different layers: sand, stones and rock. Sand at the bottom, then stones, then rock, then they repeat (sand - stones - rock - sand - stones - rock). Trowel clears one or two 'full' layers. The fact that the trowel digs down 3 and not 2 is what threw me off at the beginning.
