Maybe I just really suck at digging but every time I use the trowel it breaks the item and I seem to run out of time every single time. I use the brush and shovel mainly as I said the trowel just breaks things for me. I cant seem to manage digging them up and I am going to have to wait for it to expire because I've tried so many times and its just upsetting me. Is there a trick to the trowel I am missing?

Yeah, there's a trick. Each use of the trowel removes three layers of dirt. If you see the largest size rocks on the square you wish to dig, that's three layers of dirt. So don't use it if you're looking at small rocks. That's probably the simplest rule of thumb to follow.

Also, you'll have to be careful if you have that double inspiration built up, because then if you use it, you're going to remove six layers instead of just three.

trowel works better on purple and gold digs with more depth to excavate

Thanks @Glurin I really struggle with this as the time limit is so short as well :(

Okay I worked it out I was thinking there was a time limit because when I failed it said I had ran out of time, turns out its complete troll and it pays to take your time as long as you don't damage it. I feel a bit stupid but I am also extremley happy now I can do Ultimate leads :D

I never even seen an ultimate lead. I had no idea they were a thing!

I seem to always miss uncovering it by one square! I spent hours on one Saturday night and it still in the ground. Seems no matter what I do I have one stinking square left covering it when time runs out? Is there a quick way to uncover besided mouse clicking?

Since I upgraded to the shovel, I don't even use the trowel any more.

Trowel clears 3 (one intuition point) or 6 (two intuition points) layers of dirt. If you clear more than there are layers and there is an antiquity in this place, you will break it. It is possible to have up to 9 layers.
Heavy shovel clears 1 (one intuition point) or 2 (two intuition points) layers.

Better use the big spade and the brush for the main item and the trovel for the tetris blast finale.

Gold antiquities are not square/rectangular. There are corners at the sides. Use heavy shovel to dig the most of the antiquity and use trowel to dig single cells.
Remember, trowel doesn't use time. Heavy shovel uses 1 turn regardless of intuition points.

The fact that the trowel digs down 3 and not 2 is what threw me off at the beginning.

But why? There are 3 different layers: sand, stones and rock. Sand at the bottom, then stones, then rock, then they repeat (sand - stones - rock - sand - stones - rock). Trowel clears one or two 'full' layers.
