Are Crown Prices out of control?

As soon as a game introduces a second currency, that is purchased by real life funds, you have lost me as a gamer. As a long time Elder Scrolls fan, I gave ESO a second shot (after quitting the first time when I saw the crown store). Its dishonest, and opens the door for all manner of gross practices. ESO takes this a step further with gems...

It's interesting you mention this, because I'm pretty sure if this game had the heavy-handed monetization it does now back when I first started playing in 2016, I would have just walked away. Developers have a habit of doing this on purpose for that very reason - they know it makes customers walk away. They launch a game in an acceptable state of monetization and then later jack it up to eleven. After watching how Zenimax Media has handled monetization of a couple franchises I follow, I do not trust anything they release anymore. The only thing that could change that now is if they dial back and there are zero signs of that happening and several of precisely the opposite.

"Hey kids! Did you know that when you purchase Greymoor, additional purchases are now required to finish the mythic items we hyped up as a feature of this expansion! Yaaaaay!"

You are right of course, but the general argument is still correct, even with these 3 special cases.

And it's still luxury pixels for sale here. No one's gouging you for life necessities.

There is nothing anyone NEEDS here, or a make a case that they should be able to DEMAND or FORCE a price change.

The prices will drop when people stop buying stuff. Until then, deal.

If you don't want to spend the money, don't spend it.

The company sets the prices, and I'm sure that they're setting prices that people will pay. If you don't want to pay those prices, too bad, so sad. Obviously someone is. I'm not buying them either, but it's not my or your place to tell people what they can and can't buy.

I love poeple who claim this.

So you're saying with a measly 10,000 crowns for SIX MONTHS from subbing, you have more than you know what to do with?

    Bank/merchant cost 5k each.
I'd never buy the Bank or Merchant at that price, even if you gifted me the crowns. It's a waste of them. I've never understood why anyone at all gets them. (ditto with riding lessons)
Character slots, outfit slots, name change, race change, unlocking hair/facial hair styles, any one mount, any one costume... These all cost between 1500 and 3k. Not to mention houses, which are between 5 and 10k. Not to mention crown crates with some of the flashiest mounts available which are very pricey.

Got plenty of characters with 8 slots, outfit slots are the one item in the crown store that I agree is vastly overpriced (1500 for an account-wide slot would still be overpriced), I've never name/race/class/etc changed in any game I've played, I think all the mounts are ugly - especially the crate ones (got a basic black horse for 700 crowns when I started playing), and I've bought a bunch of costumes (which are 500-1k). I've got 8 or 9 houses, didn't buy them for crowns.

So, yeah. The crowns I got from my starting months of sub in 2016, and the 3k pack I bought Black Friday 2017... still have ~1700 left. I've gotten all the zone DLC up to Murkmire during event sales. If I was a constant -subber, I'd be swimming in crowns with nothing immediate to do with them.

Do you have so many extra crowns because you just never spend them? Because you just don't care about character customization?

I love character customization - I've played bad games just for the character customization. My multi-GB folders of mods for MW/OB/SK/FO3/FO4 are almost entirely character customization. It's not a huge crown expense in this game, though.
(I don't really consider race & name change, or mounts, or houses, to be part of 'character customization')
