why is the pvp crowd so hostile and rude to each other?

like my title says, why? you cant even make jokes without someone telling you to [Snip] off. why are they all so hostile and mean to each other? are we not meant to work together to get victory? and not waste our time slagging each other off for no reason? [Snip]

there is not a fair environment to display our pvp skills. High unbalance, not many game modes (either chaotic open world, either 4v4v4), lack of improvement potential (you don't get info on what's happening, or what happened). To get good in pvp there is needed a heavy amount of dedication and research. This drains energy and emotion. You remain a shell that struggles to be filled, so you become hostile and feral.

Some people have anger problems, just ignore them. I do PvP constantly, and if someone complains, ignore them, let them starve. That's at least what I usually do, not always, and I am usually the friendliest MF around:)

And I think it is always like that in PvP, no matter the game, people get frustrated faster then in PvE, and that makes them act like a**holes. Not an excuse though, I guess manners die when you are behind the monitor....

    Utter Crap.

Background: ive spent my life in hostile environments, im now pretty old and specialise in crowd management, security and psychology.
I have found the PvP community here on the whole to be amazing and the zone banter funny as hell.
On the other hand my experience of grouping for dungeons was littered with hot heads and folks hung up on dps meters.
That;s the community that needs to chill out.

Or we could just stop generalising and say you can get idiots on both sides with the majority pleasant and fun?

    this^^
I once said something in zone chat in astonishment about getting hit by 14k overload light attacks,in well
just amazement that a sorc gank build existed
    wasnt anything agressive
but had a bunch of people instantly reply with "Learn to play" and "its a learn to play issue"
    Like
    Ok??
Dont know what me complimenting and saying something in amazement had to do with those replys but sure buddy.
Its often the most toxic people that are the most vocal
I remember experiences back on console that kickstarted my social anxiety and fear of talking.

Any competitive setting brings out both the best and the worst in people, as I imagine you will have discovered in your time in "hostile environments". There is certainly an element of anger issues and also maturity issues in such settings, but there are plenty of good-natured aspects as well, including humour.

This mixture of "best and worst in people" has never been more apparent than in the current Covid crisis, where there are plenty of examples of selfish idiocy and unpleasantness, but even more examples of selfless kindness to others.

I saw a lot of this in Aion. My favorite thing was a rivalry between my ranger and an Elyos ranger. We hunted each other mercilessly most of the time, but one day I was right on the brink of a new tier in AP, and it kept changing ranks depending on whether I was winning or losing fights. I came over a rise to engage him and found he'd set up a shop that said "Go to the Abyss and grind out some AP, you're making me dizzy".

PvP encourages you to be an ***. That's just it's nature. The entire, core goal of PvP is to ruin somebody else's day. This can be tempered with some honor and good sportsmanship, but there's a lot of people attracted to it that just don't understand the concept.

PvE has it's share as well though. A lot of people are attracted to it that don't understand the concept of immersion or not obsessing over damage meters. This creates friction in group environments when someone isn't strictly adhering to the meta approved build or method. The main difference is PvE generally doesn't actively encourage such behavior by it's nature. It's entirely player driven.

And that includes PvE environments (like leaderboards, and "gotta top the DPS chart" people, and progression/'world-first' raiding). The difference is that there's also plenty of non-competitive PvE, while all of PvP (by definition) is competitive. ;)

Hmm, I don’t know about DC using that tactic, because they’re usually too busy PVPing in zone chat too. Bless their hearts 🙄 There are a couple of people who seem to actively try to promote more civility but usually it’s just the silliest, pettiest squabbles.
