Excavating a gold level item, I keep digging up the entire chest, but it still fails...

I'm able to dig up the entire chest for the gold item but it is still failing (running out of time)...is it me or is it bugged? Am I missing something?

here is a work around. The chest image is offset from the area you need to dig (the sparkles)

Yegads. I didn't know about that bug yet.
I've worked my way up to doing purple-level now, but not gold, thank goodness.

Great, there is a solution. That means ZoS will never fix it now. Like add-ons, why improve something, when the community will do it for you. Zos, Bethesdas go to.
