Is there a way to reduce player toxicity?

Could ZOS implement a setting so you couldn't recive whispers from an enemy alliance?

I know i should just suck it up, but i don't feel like i should have to be mocked and degraded just to play a game. For many people this is an escape from the real world, you know? atleast it is for me.

I know you can report another player, but when should you?

Every single PvP game i've played has this kind of thing. You need thicker skin. The world is tough.

Only one, and that is illegal in just about every part of the world...

They could, but... since most people wouldn't use it and it would take them paid programmer time to add, its not very likely to happen...
    kirse10 wrote: »

Simply put, when they take a huge step out of the grey area and not just flirt with the limit of the code of conduct or ToS, but shatter it to pieces. Then you bloody well ought to report the [censored to follow forum rules]! Report 'em and let ZOS sort them out! The server logs record everything, they just need a little help knowing where they need to look...
    ...
Everything that's more "low-key venting", I just ignore mentally, or even laugh at as display of some peoples foolishness at getting that worked up over this... heck, sometimes things started out that way and even ended up differently, I recall at least two instances where someone sent me a hateful message and I just -talked- to them and in the end we parted ways peacefully... other times that may not be possible of course, and sometimes you may not want to spend the time...
    ...
...but yeah, I have to admit that some of the worst hurts through words from toxic messaging have been way below any "ToS/CoC" limits, just them hitting the bullseye in a vulvnerable spot.
    It happens.
But you cannot fix it once it happened, you cannot prevent it from happening again unless you refuse to talk to anyone, and the best you can do it have some friends to cry and vent to after it happened so you get over it sooner.

And whenever you can, remember... its -their- choice wnat to say to you, but its -your- choice how you react to it. You can feel vexed... or you can just laugh at them, or you can sadly shake your head at them, or you can take their tears as badge of honor in telling you your playing was more then they could handle. Up to you. ;)

Hmm, it seems like your answer didn't really address the question. So, what you're saying is that if you can't send hate whispers to the opposing factions, your PvP experience is ruined? That is, after all, the context that you initially replied to.

Yup, I enjoy pvp saltyness its what makes pvp worth while.

I literally pvp to gather hate tells, it means youre doing good.

Then I've done really good at fishing and getting instantly killed by people running up on me. Because I've gotten hate whispers from people who just killed me, telling me how much I suck that I didn't even get a hit back in before they mowed me down while I sat there with a fishing rod in my hand.

I don't think there's a way to reduce toxicity in a game that has PvP and no enforcement of any sort of code of conduct. If reporting actually did anything things might be different, but as long as the devs think it does something without actually looking into seeing if anything is being done, we're pretty much boned.

Sounds like a bad player finally got his first kill, let him go with it

create a PvP chat tab and turn off tells/whispers for when you go to PvP and normal chat tab for the rest of your play time. It will at least get rid of opposing player nonsense.

Is there a way to increase toxicity?

Sometimes I am using all the possible cheese in PVP (zaan, mist, unstoppable brute, brp dw)... My characters have offending looks (sometimes I play without legs armor piece and t-bag people)... And I rarely receive any hate whispers, with exception of some smallscales when they can't catch me :D well, i am t-bagged pretty often, but that's not a whisper.

When I started ESO I pugged vDLC dungeons and even normal trials as lowCP (300-500) bosmer tank in random sets (for example I used infernal maw for a long time and loved that Daedroth "tanks" there with me) and nobody kicked me or asked what sets I am running.. of course sometimes I was unable to deal with boss (for example vSCP trolls were brutal when I was CP350), then I simply apologized and left group myself to switch to more tanky build and return later.

So I'm curious how you manage to attract so much whispers and what can I do to achieve that? ><

There's at least three ways to go about "When do I report players?"

    A. Don't report. Just ignore them, either mentally or on your actual Ignore list.
    B. Report them when you feel like it. Very cathartic. Best accompanied by screenshots of the offending message.
    C. Report them when they break the TOS or Code of Conduct. Also best accompanied by screenshots.

    TOS: https://account.elderscrollsonline.com/terms-of-service
    COC: https://account.elderscrollsonline.com/terms-of-service

    I lean towards C myself.

That does nothing. I've reported numerous people using racial remarks in the game in zone chat and they are back at it the next day.

This game they don't really ban people for that, but of course if you scam someone with a crown store purchase then it's a whole different issue.......

The lack of GM's in the game (if there are any) is what makes it be toxic. If you look at other games where a GM can be called in and see the chat or the toxic behavior, then it stops because they suspend/ban people no problem.

    Keep Zone Chat off.
FYI - There is no such thing as 'night capping' in a world wide MMO.
FYI - There was no paid Beta. When they launched the game the Beta was over, even if you don't think it was.
    FYI - It's B2P not F2P. There is a difference.
FYI - It doesn't take any player skill to mash keys or buttons in this game. The ones that stay alive longer have the better internet connection and speed.
FYI - The game is not broken, it still works. It just has 'bugs' that need to be fixed.
    Balance is a "Bad" thing.

Example: There were hundreds of Jedi and only two Sith in Star Wars. The Jedi wanted, "Balance in the Force" and they got it. Now there are only two Jedi and two Sith.

    Balance is a "Bad" thing.

Seriously, I don't know where players manage to find so many toxic people in dungeons... from my experience it's maybe 1 run from 20 when somebody will be notably toxic and he is usually fake healer.

I remember my pug times... I was running crazy builds and doing crazy things (while still working for group result ofc) and nobody objected that I'm not using ebon+torug's or whatever. My favorite build was tava+nocturnal's favor with 3k stam regen and passive dodge + bombard spamming instead of claws, leash instead of chains and roll-dodging heavy attacks instead of blocking and nobody was kicking me, actually I got friends from those runs and invitations to my first guilds.
So when somebody tells he was kicked instantly because somebody saw his gear, it feels like whole story is not told.

Donno, last time I whispered someone in pvp it was for small talk, cause I was bored :D

I do this too. I also try to turn the toxic hate tells into a meaningful conversation but that doesn't always work.

In PvP I found it is best to just not respond to toxic whispers or posts in chat. If they whisper you they will quickly move on if they do not get a response. If it is in general chat someone else will probably feed them but that conversation can easily be ignored.

PvP is super toxic. You need to get used to it. Just yesterday i was at bleakers fighting 1v4. Killed them 3-4 times but bleakers was red and they just came Back. Finally they got me and all 4 tbagged me.

One wispered me that i only won cause of exploits. But man, i dont even know one exploit in this game.

In the not too distant future, it will be necessary to be fully identified to be on the Internet and the trolls will return to their caves.

They are cowards, real life loosers.

I remember once in a WoT tournament in Texas a person from another team came where we were to insult a fellow player who beat him.

He insult my partner making fun of a condition of him, my reaction was to hit his nose, he started crying like a little girl, none of his companions had the courage to confront me.

Unfortunately the toxicity and foul language used in COD & Battlefield (I keep chat in these games muted) is starting to spill over into ESO recently. Indeed only yesterday we kicked a guy from guild for repeatedly using the "N" word in guild chat

I don't like rude people, but dealing with them is pretty easy. What I want to know is if there's a way to stop people from using the word "toxicity" since it's so banal and generic. Rude <> poison. Vulgar <> poison. Coarse <> poison. Rude, vulgar, and coarse describe three different and totally distinct demeanors. "Toxic" erases all the distinctions and lumps everything into one generic basket.

    It's a stupid word.

In an online game played by millions of players anonymously, you are never going to get rid of player toxicity. Its everywhere, in both PVP and PVE, and there isn't anything that gaming companies can do to control it. I've seen games where dev's have tried to reduce player toxicity by nerfing "must have" items, including the games MOST Iconic heavy weapon - the Gjallahorn. All the nerfs did nothing to curb toxicity, players just found other things that were "must have" and other ways to be toxic.

The problem isn't the game or the devs, its the kind of players who play the game. Not all players are toxic, and I may even say a majority are not toxic, but those who are seem to be the loudest and mostly the least tolerable players of the playerbase. But so long as they remain anonymous and there is no accountability for their behavior, they're simply going to remain toxic no matter what Bethesda/Zos does.

And TBH, I don't know if I'd advocate to have Bethesda/Zos have in-game babysitters who could squelch these players because I've seen games try that, and it didn't really work out either. Moderation was hit-or-miss, and often times the Moderators seemed to play favorites.

Just chalk up the toxicity to a natural biproduct of online gaming. You have to take it or leave it, and you always have the option to ignore those toxic players.
