Is there a way to reduce player toxicity?

I really love this game, but the toxicity is just what ruins it for me. Especially in pvp!

Could ZOS implement a setting so you couldn't recive whispers from an enemy alliance?

I know i should just suck it up, but i don't feel like i should have to be mocked and degraded just to play a game. For many people this is an escape from the real world, you know? atleast it is for me.

I know you can report another player, but when should you?

I love the hate whispers. But yeah, you should't have to deal with it if you don't want. Only solution I can think of is by being "hidden" offline, though that also includes friends and guildies.

There's at least three ways to go about "When do I report players?"

    A. Don't report. Just ignore them, either mentally or on your actual Ignore list.
    B. Report them when you feel like it. Very cathartic. Best accompanied by screenshots of the offending message.
    C. Report them when they break the TOS or Code of Conduct. Also best accompanied by screenshots.

    TOS: https://account.elderscrollsonline.com/terms-of-service
    COC: https://account.elderscrollsonline.com/terms-of-service

    I lean towards C myself.

Good idea, i will try that next time. I just don't understand why people feel the need to degrade people, there is always a nice way to say things.

    Step 1: reduce developer toxicity
Step 2: remove the automated group system (half done since it hasn’t worked right in forever)
If people have to want to group with you in order for you to get a group, suddenly being an ass has consequences that currently don’t exist

Obviously the way to avoid getting toxic whispers is to never play bad enough to make someone want to mock you, and to never play good enough to hurt someone's pride!

The only negative whispers I’ve ever gotten in this game were from my own faction.

In your guild window (even if you have no guilds) you can set yourself to offline which will prevent receiving whispers.

    Hi @kirse10!

In order to help reduce toxicity in-game, we encourage players to report instances of rule breaking behavior. This article explains how to do so, and, as mentioned above, you can consult the Terms of Service and Code of Conduct when deciding whether to report a player.

We want our players to feel safe in Tamriel and no one should have to endure harassment. We investigate every report we receive.

A report goes a long way to helping us maintain a healthy community, but for immediate concerns, setting a player to ignore will make it so they are unable to contact you. For those who don't know, you can learn how to do so here.

Thanks for helping make ESO a great place to be.

For some reason, I've found that replying with "Nawwwww" usually makes them stop whispering. I do consider it a compliment to get salty whispers from enemy players, but I can't be bothered wasting time and energy on them since there's always something more interesting to do in PvP.

Occasionally I do whisper enemy players. Usually it's to thank bombers for the extra AP def tick, or coming to an agreement that the real enemy in Cyro is the lag.

The problem is that she (as i undersatand) recieve mocking whispers, not those were you can get after you kill someone and get "hacker reported" etc etc. I got those mocks a few times with suggestions to delete eso and go play something else - even if i do not doubt my pvp skills, it was REALLY annoying. Its enough you are frustrated you got killed easily...So those people who write such whispers are lower than carpet imho. Maybe I could understand writting to those who attack you first, who you kill easily and who are 810 cp + high pvp rank...and even than its ugly.

As for those cases where you win and get accusation of cheating - yes, you can save them as trophies

Its cool if you get a personal toggle, but you already have that ability which is Toggle offline. You can whisper, can't be whispered.

But if you're trying to make it so opposing faction cant whisper you at all, well.... You may have missed ESO back in 2015.

Hmm, it seems like your answer didn't really address the question. So, what you're saying is that if you can't send hate whispers to the opposing factions, your PvP experience is ruined? That is, after all, the context that you initially replied to.

One of the best things I ever did in online games was when I decided to just ignore toxic players. Sometimes I do a quick report (right click them in chat window IIRC, been a while).

No more caring about BS. No more caring about being called slurs for homosexual, black person, whatever... Just... let it go. I mostly just let people kill me in IC too, if I am just farming (not always, I had a very persistent warden this morning who needed to be put down, don´t know what was most irritating, him or the fetcherflies he kept casting...).

It takes some training but in the end it is definitely worth it.

You will not get rid of toxic players until game companies decide it is worth it to police their games and actually kick people out for this kind of behaviour. So far, no dice.

Is having someone whisper you and call you a coward more or less toxic than when you 24v1 zerg them down?

If you have an issue with toxic players in pvp you might not want to pvp. Because toxic pvpers is the nature of online pvp.

It's not the developer or the game, it's just the nature of pvp.

Amazon New World is full of toxic smack talking pvpers talking smack in a game that's in alpha. Those toxic smack talkers are just who they are... they exist in all online games.

The only assumption is that it's just pvp that's toxic. There are toxic smack talking pvers in every online game since online games became a thing.

Toxic is all about making you feel bad. It's not bravado, it's not trying to communicate... it's "U MAD BRO" at it's core. it's only intended to enrage you. The only way it actually works is if it enrages you. Point being, if you stop taking smack talking toxic players seriously (or even responding to them at all) it's ineffective.

All the cures for it that you can come up with are circumventable. Ban cross alliance whispers and they will tell a friend or switch to another character to harass you. Make it so cross talk across alliance is impossible by account, the dedicated smack talker will make another account. So whatever you come up with, they will sidestep. The only solution is to not let them get under your skin.

New Years day, either of this year or last, I got into a group for Moonhunter Keep, and the guy kept talking crap about ZOS, insulting them on mechanic design and performance, getting pretty personal at times. I FINALLY chimed in to stand up for them, even just a little cause it was really uncalled for. That made me a target. I was getting hate whispers long after leaving the group until I finally blocked him.

Then I've done really good at fishing and getting instantly killed by people running up on me. Because I've gotten hate whispers from people who just killed me, telling me how much I suck that I didn't even get a hit back in before they mowed me down while I sat there with a fishing rod in my hand.

I don't think there's a way to reduce toxicity in a game that has PvP and no enforcement of any sort of code of conduct. If reporting actually did anything things might be different, but as long as the devs think it does something without actually looking into seeing if anything is being done, we're pretty much boned.
