Auction Houses: yes or no?

When I started playing I was quite surprised that ESO didn't have any centralized buying and selling mechanic. Which I found rather strange since I don't see the added value: ESO has instant travel - unlike EVE where local markets and transport are quite a thing. I just hate to waste hours of my life traveling around to find something that may not even be available on the whole server at all, like rare furniture. Often the guild trader doesn' t even exist in the place TTC mentions.

How would trading be if it were up to you?

The part of the community that cares about trading in ESO is very attached to guild traders. I would much prefer a system where everything could be sold (fewer to no bound on pickup/equip items), but items bought from other players couldn't be resold, or could only be resold after a long cooldown (30 days or more) to prevent item flipping.

    1. Good for immersion
    2. Allow crafty players to actually make some gold (not only those being in guilds .. I used to raise funds with this system long before I even dared to think about applying to a guild
    3. Allow any player to randomly fiind a good deal on what's needed. (on a GAH, everything is at the same price, with "clever" player putting their stuff at "min - 1g" to undercut others .. yay -_-)
    4. Prevent market-cornering of rare items

    There.
That excellent system basically create a non-gamable economy

I'll add that common items are still easy to find, rare items would be as unfindable in a GAH because they'd be so easy to find that they'd go almost instantly, and guilds turnovers are high enough so that when you search you'll easily find find a spot somewhere.

Also, all traders, baring the oddball faraway remote trading post, see enough players to sell your stuff.

If you are not the kind of player that wants every thing now, it's fun and immersive to browse guild traders in search of useful things at reasonable prices.

An Auction House is nothing but a glorified vendor. You might as well just have no player trading and just buy and sell everything from NPCs.

Tell me again the added value of the current system?

Again? Because you somehow missed the Search button where you can read the whole debate that happens every single time someone brings up the dead horse of an Auction House?

    But fine.
    Added value from ZOS' perspective:
    1. Sunk Costs and Opportunity Cost- not only is the guild store system their design, they even doubled up on it with the trader bid system. That would have been the perfect time to change, and they went even more all in on guild traders. They do not seem interested in putting in the time and effort necessary to change over to a completely different system, preferring to work on other things.
    2. Tying trading to guild membership promotes participation in guilds, which are important for socialization in ESO. They also built Guildfinder, so it would be a rather odd choice to
    3. Making players search and travel to different guild stores means shopping takes time, which is not a bad thing when you want players to spend time in your game. Spending time and effort in an MMO is not a problem from the perspective of a game dev.
    4. Making players search and travel to different guild stores helps to prevent widespread, long term price fixing or using bots to buy listings automatically. (Note that short term price fixing is still possible, but it tends to be short-lived and limited to a few items.)
    5. The original reason ZOS went with the guild system is still true: they found that Auction Houses tend to lead to good gear becoming too easy to acquire.
    6. Performance - guild listings can be laggy enough at times with a maximum of 15k items. Have you really considered the feasibility of displaying a server's worth of items for sale? LOL.
    7. Players who don't want to participate in trading guilds can sell in zone chat. Yes, this takes time and effort on their part, but that's just fine from ZOS' perspective - see spending time and effort in an MMO. It also makes zone chat look a little more alive, which is a minor benefit.

Bottom line, none of the inconveniences suffered by players really bother ZOS enough to justify them putting in the time, effort, and money to change to an Auction House. Nor are the benefits better than what ZOS derives from the current guild store system on top of not having to put in the time, effort, and money to change.

In the future, when you think about added value, try thinking "How does this benefit the people who made it that way?" not just how it benefits or doesn't benefit you as the end user. Game devs will often accept or even deliberately design inconveniences to players when it benefits them and their game. ESO is no exception. (Examples: ESO's inventory design, transmutation cap, etc.)

Edited: I dunno how I managed to forget the huge benefit that is the gold sink of the weekly trader bid.

One or a few auction house, with a tax in place to justify the existence of trading shop which will remain profitable.
I pretty sure most people who don't want a auction house still use website and addons like Tamriel Trade Center, I don't really understand their point (well except that they probably make more money that way...).
Right now, it is very difficult for a beginner to trade.

I certainly prefer a centralized auction-house system. The current mess in ESO is incredibly buyer unfriendly, pretty damn poor for minor sellers... and awesome for Big Wheeler Dealer Trading Is My Life types. Who will defend it to the death, because it warps the entire economy to serve them.

edit: it was worse, of course, before they actually added useful search functions to the guild stores. It was practically Weaponized Inconvenience back then.

But it's not going to change, because it's utterly ingrained in the game. And it is a wonderful gold sink.

I just had to accept that I wasn't going to be involved in this game's economy, as a buyer or as a seller. I make all my gold by vendoring things. Even stuff that might have value. (which, of course, further adds to the Big Trader advantage - every time some shmoe throws up their hands in disgust at the Guild Trader system and vendors/deconstructs <Rare Item>, it helps keep the supply of <Rare Item> down and the value of the ones being sold high.)

I don't mind everything as it is now. It creates a fair market (on console), as you can shop around and find deals if you put in the time.

I do believe that solo players should have access to a Personal Trader, where either they can toggle themselves into a trader/shop in a certain zone (bazaar ala Everquest). edit - https://almarsguides.com/eq/general/bazaar.cfm

Or they should set up a district specifically for shout/chat sales.

    __________________________Backstories:_________________________

Ras Kalik the Vestige, a renown Redguard warrior; He has been blessed to save Tamriel from Molag Bal’s destructive Planemeld while reuniting the Five Companions. His further accomplishments after defeating Molag Bal, has been to stop the destruction of Morrowind, the Clockwork City, return order to the isle of Summerset and create a new king in Wrothgar and a queen in Elsywer. These events have made him a living legend and continue to lead him into new adventures throughout Tamriel, as well as into the hearts of many ladies including the Elf Queen, Aryenn. Over many years of adventurous travels, Ras Kalik had become a loner, until he re-visited his homeland of Alik'r.

Alik'r and it's cities were overrun by the undead Ra-Netu and therefore he made an allegiance with Alik'r's own Ash'abah tribe. These Ash'abah with his help, cleansed the city of Sentinel in Alik'r desert and it's surrounding areas of the undead brought to life by the Withered Hand. After rescuing Sentinel from the undead zombies, King Fahara’jad’s personal bodyguard the Goliath of Hammerfell, who was given this name by Imperials in the region; was asked to assist the tribe after learning of the defeat of the Withered Hand to the Ash'abah. Kalik promised Goliath he would task him with fighting living enemies on the battlefield if he so desired. Goliath being a Yokudan warrior wields a massive sword in respect to the Ansei, a gift given by the Imperial, Cinan Tharn. Not many soldiers are able to wield double two handed weapons, but Goliath loves to get up and personal in a fight, so he also carries a giant maul, both weapons laced with magical flames.

Jux Blackheart is a master thief that masquerades as a Bard at the Sisters of the Sands inn, with his younger sidekick Lucky Hunch for pilfering and gambling during this time. Jux was known to infiltrate any towns bank vault he came across and even delved into Ayelid ruins without detection. Kalik can vividly recall the night he met the famed thief. Jux found himself rummaging thru a slightly inebriated Kalik’s pocket for too long, on a full-mooned night and because of his greed and the glimmer of his golden armor in the moonlight. He lost his left pinky fingertip as a lesson! But in return, he gained a new friend, as it was his first time since a child being caught red-handed...

Upon arrival back in the Alik'r after many moons of adventuring, Ras Kalik ventures to Bergama. Visiting The Winking Jackal, he runs into Jux Blackheart, who introduces him to the coin game Crowns vs Forebearers (Heads vs Tails) and Golden Dwemer (RBG).... Jux constantly takes gold from the unfortunate thru theft or gambling, his biggest gambling victim is actually his partner in crime known as Lucky Hunch the Gambler. Lucky doesn't mind losing any gold coins to Jux... as Jux saved him from Altmer slavers in Summerset, by stealing a key and sending him on a boat to the mainland years prior. Lucky spent years in slavery with Khajiits in Summerset and picked up the art of subterfuge, using illusion magic disguises and stealing there.

Kaotik Von’Daemon an outcast, and a half-caste between a Breton mother and a Redguard father. Kaotik become a pariah due to his conjuration of Daedra pets. He was taught healing magic during his childhood years by his Breton mother. His father due to Redguard customs exiled him from the desert, sending him by wagon caravan to be a soldier in the war in Cyrodiil. He happened to meet Kalik while traveling from Alik'r, during this long caravan ride the caravan he was in was ambushed in Bangkorai by a group of bandits. Kalik by chance was also traveling thru this area on his Auridon Warhorse (which was bestowed to him by his friend, Darien Gautier). During this ambush, Kalik was able to rescue five hostages from the bandits. Kaotik was the first rescued, and Ras Kalik also recruited him to be in the Ash'abah tribe. These core Ash'abah tribesmen may never be seen together in travel as they partake in their own adventures but they always know what each other is doing; as they frequent a hideout in northern Bankorai. Their hideout an old Orc castle ruin, is kept watch by Nuzhimeh and she passes messages written between them, and frequently they also enjoy her company and her bed.

The other men rescued were a Dunmer banker, an Imperial mercenary and two other soldiers, an Imperial and a Breton Knight, stating proudly he was an Akavir descendent. One of the Imperials, Cinan, claimed to be related to Abnur Tharn the Battlemage of the Imperial Elder Council (One of Ras Kalik's mentors in the Five Companions). Cinan Tharn was really Abnur's drunkard treasure hunting illegitimate son. He was caught smuggling artifacts out of the Ayleid ruins in Cyrodiil and the elder of the two Imperials was Tyrus Septim a retired Imperial navy battle-mage (now a Lycan mercenary living in the city of Rimmen) and guard to the Tharn family. As much as Abnur Tharn hated his half-sister Euraxia, he dislikes his bas†ard son Cinan more. Tyrus now a ruffian and privateer had been paid by Abnur Tharn to watch over Cinan as much as possible. Cinan Tharn a drunkard, loves to drink at least a quarter barrel of Nord mead before he raids various delves and dungeons for relics to sell on the black market. Cinan also plans to one day, run an illegal gambling ring... which he thinks will net him more gold for his wares.

The Dunmer captive shackled to the Imperials looked familiar to Kalik from his time in Morrowind.... and he recognized him as Tythis Andromo a House Telvanni slave-owner and banker from Vvardenfell. During a rough interrogation to Tythis, Ras Kalik learnt why the bandits accosted him. The racist Dunmer was providing slaves as soldiers for the Three Banner War. The bandits were trying to negotiate a lucrative ransom for Andromo and the Imperials.... Kalik did not need any of this gold and he could never set Tythis free as he did with the two Imperial soldiers. His past involvement with slavery and war crimes, made Kalik's blood boil. He chose not to execute Tythis, as he figured the worse punishment for this former rich and opulent slave owner, is to now be an imprisoned servant for Ras Kalik and the tribe.

Herzog Zwei the Genesis a reknown Imperial/Akavirri battle-mage. His roots going back to Akavir through his mother’s bloodline. (His mother is descended from the Akaviri, through Versidue-Shae, and his Imperial father met her in Hakoshae, while traveling) Herzog earned the nickname "the Genesis" from his father as a child, as he was his mother's first born child, and last, as she tragically died in child-birth.

Herzog was seeking to purchase an artifact from Cinan Tharn, before their capture and was meeting Tyrus while in Rimmen, who introduced him to Cinan. This artifact being the Ayelid artifact; the sword Sinweaver. After their rescue and the exchange of gold to Cinan for the sword he decided to slip away before Ras Kalik could question who he was, and why the Akavir descendant really wanted that sword. Herzog was headed to Nagastani — An Ayleid ruin in eastern Cyrodiil. He had read in scrolls that the Sword would give him magical powers to meet his mothers spirit, if he performed an Ayleid ritual at an old shrine hidden there. Equipped with the artifact sword, he was off to start his own adventure but Ras Kalik, did indeed notice the sword however and instead sent a letter to Jux Blackheart (whom also was interested in Ayleid treasures), to attempt to find Herzog and acquire the sword. (*Azani Blackheart in Elder Scroll's Oblivion is Jux's descendant some 747 years later)

And so the Redguard, Imperial and Akaviri men parted ways ... While Ras Kalik went off to Elsweyr to encounter the latest threat to Tamriel, with Abnur Tharn and Sai Sahan - - DRAGONS!! Little did Ras Kalik know a few people were awaiting him in Senchal besides Sai. A necromancer survived his attack on the Withered Hand, while in Alik'r. The necromancer known as Auriek Siet'ka is also following him to the land of the Khajiits and Cacique the Sage of Ius a Shaman mystic who has become attuned spiritually with Tu'whacca (a Redguard God) and Ius (the Animal God), after being burned severely by the escaped dragons in Elsywer, is awaiting his arrival also. Aurik is a soldier of the Daggerfall Covenant that was introduced to necromancy while in the military, even though this magicka art is not spoken of openly by most of the Military leaders. He came to Alik'r and worked with the Withered Hand before Ras Kalik intervened on their plans. After the defeat of the Withered Hand, he aligned with the Worm Cult, and is constantly adapting and perfecting his necromantic arts.

After his journey to Rimmen, Kalik heads south to Senchal, in the southern regions of Elyswer. This new adventure will also put him on a path to meet a strange Redguard man. The stranger which was infected with an untreated Peyrite disease and also was the exiled from the Order of the New Moon cult, due to his sickness. He originally joined the cult to worship Laatvulon, the green dragon, mistakenly thinking it was the Daedric prince Peyrite. This confused and suffering cultist is known as Tsar al-Bomba and he is on a path to spread the disease. He was originally infected in Orccrest while recruiting members there. Can Ras Kalik and the shaman Cacique cure this poor soul, only time will tell. Little does Tsar al-Bomba know, that his infection is tied to Vampirism, and eventually the desire for blood will take over his mind. Senchal also offers Kalik his latest love interest... Aeliah. Whom he fondly led thru battles with the Dragonguard.

After the trek thru the heat, tropical and desert climate of Northern and Southern Elyswer, Ras Kalik heads north to the cold mountain range of Skyrim. His companion friend Lyris beckons for him with a letter sent by crow...

Movárth Piquine - a former vampire hunter (now infected), within the Fighter's Guild (and a secretive necromancer) was in Skyrim working with the Morthaal Guard. On a patrol mission he was caught in Frewien's ice curse outside of Morthaal with the frozen undead. Movárth's vampiric infection kept him from becoming an undead minion to the curse. He was able to use necromantic ice-magic to encase himself safely until he was freed with Freiwen, when the Vestige Ras Kalik broke the curse.

Uri Ice-Heart - brother of Urfon Ice-Heart. The twin sons of Atli and Oljourn Ice-Heart. The Ice-Heart family are originally from Markarth but now reside on the Jerall Mountain range near Cyrodiil, with their younger sister Araki. The twins had joined the Winterborn Reachmen while living in Markarth. Urfon pushed west to Orsinium with the Winterborn Clan, leaving his family behind. Uri stayed behind with his parents and sister to live in the family cabin for safety, avoiding the Vampire plague infiltrating the Reach. After news reaches him and he hears of Urfon's death... Uri leaves and heads home and is seeking vengeance. Meanwhile, his sister has also moved on to Windhelm to join the Fighter's guild. He will visit his sister, once before going to seek vengeance and she will craft him armor mixed with ice, called Stalhrim armor. Uri fearing death, after his brother's passing, falls victim to the convincing talk of Movárth at a Nordic tavern, and will also becomes a vampire.

Add more guild stores per city
The inconvenience that you dislike is what makes it harder for people to corner the market. You actually need to go to every location that offers a certain item or material instead of just going into an auction house and buying it all up right there and then reselling it for an absurd amount.
People are already reselling items for profit, but with a decentralized system like this one, it takes a lot of time to track down all of the items, allowing other players to beat them to it by chance.

Now not all cities are created equal. Crafting hubs, undaunted pledge cities, or cities in zones that people spend a lot of time in or cities with convenient trader placement are all highly sought after for trading guilds because people will usually look there first. That's why the competition for these spots is high and guild sale requirements and fees are high too. This can be somewhat alleviated by introducing more traders to the major trading hubs and buffing convenience of other cities to match them.
This Bosmer was tortured to death. There is nothing left to be done.

    Short & Simple!!
We need a global auction place it can be one in each main city of each faction if they like but the way it is at the moment is a haunting feeling to have to run around like we do and on top of that only the biggest guilds keeps the traders to have to bid on 10 guilds a week are you serious?? And than still get out bid
I bid 1 to 2 million a week on each of the 10 traders and still at times do not get a trader lol

I think Guild traders should stay but there should be a toggle option to view all items sold by all guild traders vs. the need to travel. The guild with the trader that ends up selling the item if it comes from another guild/trader earns a small % in commission above and beyond what is already charged to the player selling the item.

It does add a lot of flavour to the world to do things this way. And I like using TTC and visiting those guild traders tucked away in the more remote parts of Tamriel to snap up a deal.

That said, I would hate this system without TTC, and I definitely think the system would be improved by an official in-game version of it. A centralized census of all goods sold, only available in capital cities, and you'd still need to travel to the specific vendors to buy the item you searched for.

On reason number two, I am confused. You say it allows those people not in guilds to make gold. It actually fores people to join guilds to sell anything. So not sure how you used the system before even joing a guild. OH I know...you didnt...

On point number 4, you are missing something. While someone cant corner the market on "items", they do corner the market on VENDERS. Keeping the top sales slots only to the guild mofias is well known here in ESO.

This "excellent system" creates a completely gamable economy. Ya cant sell unless you join a guild.

I know it's not going to change. I just would like people to actually admit the truth about how it is being abused.

Add more guild stores per city
I actually really enjoy spending a night trekking around tamriel to see what various traders have available. Sometimes I find good deals, sometimes I find things I didn't even know I wanted. The only thing I would add is more traders so I can shop even more. :D

This is in my top 3 for dumbest things in this game. One auction house please. The only reason people want to keep it the same way is so they can continue to rip people who don't know about TTC off. Really terribly designed system.

Why the hell does anyone want to travel at all to buy something???

The current system is complete trash.

Guilds that actually sell large volumes and have members that support the guild with donations and high sales volumes are what allows guilds to keep top spots. The competition for top spots and middle spots is fierce. Guilds move around and get moved around all the time. Each guild has to raise money to support its own spot and its a huge gold sink for the game, which it needs. It is a community effort. Since this is an MMO, its working as intended. You want a top spot, join or develop a top trading guild and do your part.

Again, MMO, working as intended but does not prevent someone from selling in zone which happens all the time.

Guild mafias are a conspiracy theory made up in the minds of people that cant deal with or simply dislike the system as is.

    Keep everything as it is
Leave it like it is, I'm breaking down stuff that might ordinarily go into an AH, and if it's something rare that someone else wants, it's just gone. I'm not consistent enough a player to warrant joining a trade guild, so I get to save my crafting resources to craft for me, instead of having to list x amount of stuff that actually sells in order to stay in a guild, on top of regular attendance.

I don't even bother with it, mostly if I DO sell something it's zone chat. The few times I've actually tried finding an item on Xbox, going from zone to zone, checking each trader takes WAY too long, esp with the loading screens.
