A simple poll about Win10 and volumes in game, Discord, and Teamspeak

I want to stress that this is NOT an ESO/ZOS problem; all evidence points to Window10.

For a few months I have had terrible problems with volume control of my game, music, & Discord. It effects both speakers and microphones.
I see volumes change while I am shutdown then sometimes a speaker or microphone will just stop working when the W10 troubleshooter says it is working.
Trying a clean install of Win10 and the game on a new disk did not help. My searches for possible fixes are not going well.

Are others having sound system problems in the last few months?
Has anyone seen any discussions about possible fixes in any forums?

I have no issues with Windows 10, the only issues i have ever had with ESO is the lag and annoying bugs in game.

    Sorry i cant help more.

I don't use Discord or microphone, but the thought that occurs to me is to question your sound card/drivers. Have you tried reinstalling them, especially if you upgraded to Windows 10 initially and then on the clean install of Windows 10 relied on its own generic drivers rather than ones specific to your sound card - is it onboard or separate?

This. I have zero sound issues in this or any game, though I don't use mic or discord. But Win 10 plays really nice with sound cards and GPUs.

Are you by any chance using the attenuation feature in discord? The volume changes in windows when that triggers sometimes get "stuck".

I think it's also possible that if you are playing through Steam, or have Steam running in the background, Steam voice chat could be interfering with the volume levels in ESO/Discord.

I had problem with volume changing randomly, especially with streams (like YT). The problem went away when I downgraded audio driver to the one from manufacturer site, because apparently Win10 updated it.

You are using USB headphones/speakers? Try a usb3 port or an external powered USB hub

    Hello,
I can say that my issues are not from a headset, bluetooth or a USB sound device. I have several of each type and they all get confused. I think there are some settings that do not play well together in the many ways WIndows has setup the controls for speakers and microphones. I found a new one for me today that was stopping Discord microphone from working.
Settings, Privacy, Voice activation; it was off...not sure what did that but it was not me directly. Now here is my list of places I go to check when a speaker or microphone device are not working. Oh, and the sound troubleshooter. But that is pretty bogus.

    Settings Privacy Microphone
    Settings Privacy Voice Activation
    Settings System Sound
    Sound Control panel Playback
    Sound Control panel Recording
    Speakers (the notification area speaker)
    Speakers Volume Mixer

Probably won't help your problem any but almost every NVIDEA update wreaks havoc on my sound devices and Discord. It messes with the settings and for some reason always picks the speakers on the monitor (never used) as default.

That's interesting. I update NVIDIA drivers about once every two months, and it never does that sort of thing on my system. I don't use mic or discord; I never see it change the default from headset.

    For windows 10 - http://prntscr.com/1018apw

type "sound" in your little search box near the windows button, get on sound mixer, open, scroll for eso sound - my slider was down to 25. Pull it up to 100 (or whatever suits your hearing) and done.

I struggled with Discord for a while at first. I don't have a mic hooked up 24/7, and usually use the speakers. When I need to voice chat I plug in a gaming headset, and I've found it's safest to *always* go to my Windows Advanced Sound Options (right click speaker icon, Open Sound Settings, Scroll down and click Advanced Sound Options.)

I have to make sure the Outputs and Inputs are all appropriately going through the headset and Discord.

Note also with Discord: I usually see two instances with separate input/output. One is the Discord App, the other is the specific Discord chat room/group. That specific one only appears when you've joined a chat group in Discord already.

The only game I have trouble with sound wise is RDR2. For whatever reason the sound is turned down whenever is launched. Something within sound setting on windows 10 is changing the volume level.

Yeah. There must have been a driver update in the last week or so as half the people I know had to reset discord under windows >sound>other apps and in some cases even the game to previous settings.

Also, if you have discord to use headset and use speakers as default for youtube/system/etc for example, Windows updates will also reset discord etc including the game to default, and made default the monitor or the generic digital sound option in the list. ie not speakers, not nVidia sound card, and not the headset.
