The distinction between Memento and Emotes? Time to do away with clunky memento system.

It seems like more and more we are seeing emotes which could be mementos and vice versa. Things like wickerman emote would probably have been a memento in the past.

Perhaps it's time to do away with the memento system altogether and convert them into emotes. The reasons being:

- They are clunky to access through the collectables menu - no easy /emote command.
- Once you have initiated a memento you can't cancel out of some of them easily like an emote.
- Certain mementos have been popularly requested to be continual emotes. Eg. Murkmire Drum or Vossa-Satl.

The only thing that mementos did that you can't do with an emote is in the case of the auras or swirls where you character would transform and you would still be able to do emotes. The solution for this would be simple. Convert those into polymorphs.

The net effect would be simplified menus and easier access to mementos through emote commands. No silly timers locking you in and looping mementos where it makes sense.

I agree that they can seem a bit interchangeable, but actually they aren't (or aren't always).

As (as you say) you can carry on doing other things (like running, fighting, opening windows etc.), with momentos active (e.g. Floral Swirl Aura).

Whereas, as soon as you try to run somewhere, your emote (even if it's a long lasting one, like /summonbat) immediately disappears.

Really, anything that is very quick and/or intended to not persist through other activities should be in the form of an emote and anything that lasts longer and/or is supposed to persist through other activities should be in the form of a momento.

By the way, how do you envisage the polymorph system being easier to use, specifically?

    Oh, I get you now...

I've never owned a polymorph, so I don't really know what they're like to use, but it would appear they're just like a permanent personality?

So, you could just equip an Aura and it would remain until unequipped.

Yep, might be a good idea.

Difference ZOS disallow memento in PvP locations while emotes are possible, this eventually lead to items like for example disposable mudballs what actually do same thing as memento.

Another difference that you actually can target other players with memento to apply effects or interact with them, emotes does not allow this for example you can grow flowers with Token of Root Sunder under target while emotes like for example Throw Rotten Egg does not work like this.

At last, you can spam emotes almost without limits while memento have some timers attached that reduce usage of them.

You can use memento from the quick slot panel. It is much faster than first trying to remember and then typing a command.

Fun fact - mementos were originally items that were stuck in your character's inventory after completing a particular piece of content that rewarded them. They were only later moved into a brand new "collectibles" category to help de-clutter player inventories.

Yup! And then we have some weird leftover items that remained as inventory clutter (like the Silkstone for the goblin transform/"disguise", which should rightfully be a polymorph just like the skeleton one from Shadowfen, and just ended up forgotten).

Well clunky is in these days so going forward we can expect more to adhere to memento "standards" than vice versa

"Clunky" is probably not the best way for the OP to support their argument against mementos.

So may things these days require access to the Collections menu ... with the personal banker/merchant being at the top of the list.

It's really two console buttons or two PC clicks away from selecting a memento. Which is faster to do for some players than trying to memorize a list of e-motes. It's definitely faster for me to find a memento than look up an "easy /emote command".

Momentos also generate objects, such as the Anniversary Cake, Witch's Cauldron, and Bear Trap.

In general, a momento is more complex than an emote. In many cases, the difference is very significant. As such it makes sense there is a difference between the two.

I recommend the PC addon Emomento.
"With it, you can easily turn your momento into an emote you can activate with a slash command at any time, perfect for roleplaying!"
"So, drinking is a sacrament to Y'ffre... because it's his way of reminding us not to take things too seriously... You know how the other Elves are. Altmer have their crystal towers, and that's how they want to be — cold and perfect. And Dunmer are just like their Red Mountain — smouldering and dark. We just want to have a drink and not worry about it."

I think it's the emotes that are clunky. By the time I've gotten into my chat box and typed it in, the moment has usually passed and/or the person I was reacting for has run off. At least you can put mementos in quickslot.
